Wildlife of the Churchill Area Churchill is located in the transitional zone between arctic tundra and boreal forest allowing residents and visitors alike to enjoy a wide variety of wildlife. The listing below is based on material compiled by Peter Scott, former Scientific Coordinator with the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, and furnished by Jack Dubois, former Curator of Mammals, Manitoba Museum of Man and Nature in Winnipeg. Jack will once again be co-instructing our 2004 with Kim Monson of the University of Winnipeg. Mammals Large Herbivores: Moose (Alces alces) can occasionally be seen. Their habitat is marginal until well upriver. Woodland caribou and barren ground caribou (Rangifer tarandus) are seen in small numbers in the Twin lakes area. Hunting pressure makes them hard to see. Bats: The red bat (Lasiurus borealis) is rare. Muskrats: Muskrats (Ondatra zibethicus) are fairly common and beaver (Castor canadensis) are present in fresh water and expanding in population size. Porcupine are present in low numbers. Rabbits: Two species of hare live in the region: the snowshoe hare (Lepus americanus) and the arctic hare (Lepus arcticus). The arctic hare is the more common of the two.

Here's a took at the diverse strategies they've evolved. (For the purpose of this article we're using the highly scientific definition of a small mammal as "smaller than a bread box"). See You Next Year Migration is a familiar strategy birds use to deal with winter. Yet some members of one mammal group also migrate. Any guesses? Bats, of course. Equipped with wings, many of these tiny flying mammals avoid the stresses of winter by moving southward to more hospitable climates. Within a species, some populations may migrate, while others don't. Brazilian free-tailed bats are known to migrate up to 1000 miles to wintering sites in Mexico. Whether bats migrate in flocks is uncertain. We assume most migration is at night, but some bats may move by day. Other Migrators: hoary bat, silver-haired bat Winter's Deep Sleep Because they have less bulk, small mammals have greater surface area per volume, meaning more surface through which heat is lost. Thus small mammals lose heat more readily than larger animals. (Think of heating a cup of water and a gallon of water. Which will cool first?) To stay warm in winter, they must burn proportionately more energy, all this in a season when food (read that: fuel) is harder to come by. One solution is to shut down all the systems that require fuel. In other words, hibernate.

Trip Log - Gwaii Haanas - May 2000 May 28th - Day 2 Bill Reid, Peregrines and Hot Springs Island The morning began late for many of us after land night's antics on Limestone Island. WE headed towards a small neighbouring island in the hopes of catching a glimpse of a pair of Peale's peregrine falcons that have nested there along the cliffs in recent years. While it took us three 'drive bys', we did succeed in spotting one of the adults sitting up in a small rock cavity on a ledge. From there, we moved over to the site of Tanu, an abandoned Haida village set amid giant spruce and situated in an inlet much the same as Cumshewa was. The site was actually fairly similar to Cumshewa's though much larger with more examples of long house ruins. It was a photographer's paradise, with lush green grass hiding sunken beams and frontal poles from the long houses. Tanu is the burial ground of Bill Reid, the most famous and celebrated Haida carver and the artist behind the spectacular works of Haida art in the newest terminal at the Vancouver International Airport and the Canadian Embassy in Washington, DC. His grandfather grew up in Tanu, and Bill Reid's grave site now rests on a prominent point at one end of the village, overlooking a peaceful combination of rock, beach and forest in a neighbouring cove. Tanu was also the site of our second major wildlife sighting of the day! When we pulled into the bay to anchor, guests spotted an otter swimming towards shore with a rockfish in tow. The Charlottes used to be famous for its sea otters, but they were trapped and extirpated from the islands one hundred years ago. Today, the river otter like the one we was are the only mustelids (weasel family) left on the Charlottes other than ermine and pine marten.

Gwent Wildlife Trust Species News - Spring 1999 Home species It was a recent spot of DIY that reminded me that biodiversity really does begin at home. Carefully lowering the glass bowl of a newly fitted uplight kitchen lamp I soon discovered an entomologists delight of trapped (dead) insects. Amongst the cocktail were a few houseflies, an odd wasp, but more interestingly several mosquito species including the distinctive Culiseta annulata . This insect with attractive black and white banded legs often over winters in outbuildings and frequently takes the opportunity to bite unsuspecting humans. By coincidence only a few days previous I inadvertently liberated one from my garden shed, not before it buzzed threateningly around my ear for a brief second. When one takes time to recall species that share our homes it is surprising how quickly a list can develop. Dr. Jane Austin U.S. Geological Survey Northern Prairie Wildlife Research Center Jamestown, ND 58401 Small mammals are an important part of the wet meadow and grassland communities because they are an important prey for avian and mammalian predators (including sandhill cranes) as well as being consumers of both plants and invertebrates. The objective of this component is to determine small mammal responses (abundance) to three wet meadow management regimes (idle, grazing, and burning). Because effects due to singular treatments are likely to be more easily interpreted than effects due to the rotation treatment during the short duration of this study, indices to small mammal abundance were estimated only in response to idle, burn, and graze treatments. This late-summer survey provided an index of small mammal response to growing-season habitat under management treatments, and also provided supplemental information on diversity of small mammals in treatment units. To avoid disturbance to nesting birds, we limited our capture efforts to late summer. Small mammals were trapped in late July-early August using Sherman live-traps. Field personnel follow guidelines for trapping and handling mammals established by the American Society of Mammalogists (1987). Traps were located in runway depressions or adjacent to clumps of vegetation that afford temperature moderation and shade. Traps were checked twice each day, in the early morning and late afternoon, to minimize the time animals will be in the traps. Animals were released unharmed at the site of capture, although shrews tend survive poorly, even when live-trapped, because of their very high metabolism. Data collected at each trap site included species of animal captured (if any), site dampness (saturated, damp, dry), vegetation characteristics (amount of green or dead vegetation), and litter abundance. The abundance estimate for each species in a unit was expressed as rate of captures per 100 trap efforts.
