Improving Latino Education
Preparing Teachers and Administrators to Serve
the Needs of Latino Students
Margarita Calderon The diversity in culture, religion, language, and academic background of students in most classrooms today challenges every educator's preparation. What worked in the past does not work now. Even in schools with predominantly Latino student populations, staff must recognize the diversity of the Latino culture to successfully address the needs of these students. A systematic approach to schooling for diversity appears to be the best promise for Latino student success. Such an approach is described below, organized around four questions.
  • What is a viable whole-school approach to ensure success? How can we effectively provide ongoing professional development? What is the role of local universities in professional development? How do we accept the need to change our views about Latinos so that we can make the necessary schooling adjustments?
  • What Is a Viable Whole-School Approach to Ensure Success?

The United States, a country known for its diversity, offers a wide array of possibilities for the study of English as a second language, from language academies to small community colleges to large private universities, with many variations in-between. Why a student picks one institution over another may depend on many factors: the location, the reputation of the school, the types of courses offered, the cost of the course, a recommendation of a friend, counselor or agent. Everyone knows about American universities and colleges; however, perhaps not everyone is aware that many universities and colleges in the United States offer intensive English language study for foreign students. And although one purpose of studying English in a university setting may be to prepare to do academic work in the United States, students who just want to improve their English language skills will find a program to suit their needs in intensive language programs on American campuses. These programs do tend to be academically oriented, but functional and social skills, "everyday English," are also part of the curriculum. Picking a program in which to study can be confusing and time consuming. However, if one decides to think about a college or university program, one possible way to choose would be to look at institutions that are members of the consortium of University and College Intensive English Program (UCIEP).

Other portal sites accept payment for listing various sites prominently in their space. However, these sites, usually called Portal Sites because they offer an organized and managed doorway into the Internet, are almost all either too generic or too specialized to help on many research projects. In addition, most portal sites exist to earn advertising revenue and thus focus on serving the general public rather than academics. Some portal sites are better than others and everyone identifies their favorites.
