The Parallels of ESL and Composition Pedagogy "The aim of functional objectives is to develop fluency," I interjected during a teachers' meeting in Tokyo, Japan in 1995. Functional objectives became our school's new buzz phrase. At that time, our pedagogical approach began to shift from the more accuracy-oriented approach of the target structure to the more fluency-oriented approach of functional objective. Just a few years later while attending yet another teachers' meeting but this time for English composition here in California, I encountered this familiar debate. However, the discussion wasn't about accuracy versus fluency in ESL pedagogy, but instead product versus process in composition pedagogy. Based on my experience of orienting the ESL students' communicative ability toward an informal audience, I have discovered and since adopted an approach which I feel, although effectively encompasses both fluency and accuracy, is more fluency-oriented. The importance lies not only in recognizing this dichotomy, but in accepting and working with. In Pat Peterson's article A Synthesis of Methods, he identifies interactive processing, first pioneered by E.A. Nida, as a combination of meaning-driven and form operations.

  • - These are sessions composed of up to ten students at once. These group sessions cover Grammar, Listening/Speaking, Reading, and ESL through Computers. You may choose any of these groups at any time. Although you are not committed for the entire semester, you may want to stay with a group that you like for as long as your schedule allows to benefit as much as you can. Often, individuals joining these groups end up staying together, thus creating a bond among them. Although not exclusively, most of these groups cover material for lower level classes such as ESL 42, 52, 62, etc. Individual Tutoring - These are one-on-one tutorial sessions with instructors. You may come with any range of questions - from simple help with your homework to help with your essay. These are the sessions you want to go to if you need help with organization of your paper, brainstorming ideas for a thesis, and other composition problems. Students in ESL 62 and above (including ESL learners in regular English classes) can profit the most from these sessions. Chat Rooms - These are rooms in cyberspace where you can have access to an instructor depending on availability and time. You may join any of these chats and ask the instructor who is moderating the chat questions that you may have regarding your classes. You may access these rooms from your own computer at home using your own ISP (Internet Service Provider) such as AOL or Earthlink. The first time you go in the rooms, you will be asked to "Create Account." After this first time, you will be automatically registered in the room, and you can simply log-in when you come back. Depending on availability, you may also use these rooms to meet other classmates to discuss homework and assignments. (Please be aware that these rooms are always monitored by instructors whether they are present or not; the rooms are for educational purposes, and you must bear this in mind.)

8th Grade Classes
  • English is a two semester course that emphasizes grammar, literature, and writing. This course stresses the importance of writing descriptive, narrative, expository, and process analysis paragraphs. In addition, the play Diary of Anne Frank is studied. Advanced English differs from regular english because we spend more time on reading and writing than regular English classes. We move through grammar more rapidly to allow more time for projects, additional reading, and writing opportunities. In addition, Advanced English students have an opportunity to participate in AAIMS each year, also.
9th Grade Classes

ENGLISH AS A SECOND LANGUAGE (E.S.L.)
The E.S.L. program at Cambie is designed to meet the needs of students whose native language is not English.
New students to Canada are placed appropriately after they are assessed at the Richmond School Board Office by an E.S.L. Specialist. Students coming from within Richmond or other B.C. districts are placed according to the report card suggestions. All E.S.L. students have ongoing evaluation and major district tests to ensure that they are placed correctly.

1996 Computers and Writing Conference

We want to promote the idea of "defenseless learning" in the ESL classroom and discuss ways to create defenseless learning using computers in the ESL classroom. Defenseless learning is what we choose to call what happens when students are "off the defensive," so that their "affective filters"to use Steve Krashen's term for students' anxietiesabout performing in the target languageare transformed into a desire to communicate with it. Creating a defenseless learning environment is also what Peter Elbow is referring to when he talks about creating "evaluation-free zones" for student writers. Our research and experience as ESL composition instructors have shown us that computers can help us create what both ESL and composition experts endorse: a situation where defenseless learning can take place.

Turn in ALL drafts and pre-writing used in the process of writing each paper in a folder with your name on the front. Checklists to help you collect all materials to turn in with drafts are posted on the class web page. Every draft should be should be typed (double-spaced with 1" margins all around) with size 12 font on a good quality printer (not dot matrix). If you do not yet know how to use a word processing program on a computer or electronic mail (email), NOW is the time to learn.
