ESL 82 is the most advanced reading-composition course in the ESL program. The goals of this course are to help you improve your ability to understand written English and to improve your ability to communicate effectively in writing. You should expect to increase your vocabulary, increase your understanding of English-speaking cultures, especially American, improve your ability to write idiomatic and grammatically correct English and your ability to write papers according to college level standards.
Each week there will be work in reading and writing. Some writing will be done outside of class and some in class. A minimum of 6-9 hours of homework is required.
This is the normal expectation for college level credit classes of three units. The actual amount of time you will need to spend on this course depends on your rate of writing fluency, your reading speed , and the care with which you decide to approach each assignment. Be sure you can set aside this amount of time for homework so that you

TEXT: Refining Composition Skills: Rhetoric and Grammar , 2nd edition, by Regina L. Smalley and Mary K. Ruetten
Better Writing Through Editing , by Jan Peterson and Stacy A. Hagen
COURSE DESCRIPTION : Emphasis is placed on recognition and correction of grammatical errors which interfere with the intelligibility of written texts. Students will read a variety of selected texts as a basis for their writing their own well-defined, organized an developed paragraphs and essays. Students will write two drafts for each type of paragraph and essay, and will read each other’s papers as an aide to revision. Different elements of grammar will be incorporated into each lesson, and, with the help of the editing text, students will practice finding and correcting the errors in their papers before turning them in.
IMPORTANT CLASSROOM POLICY : Students are expected to do the homework assigned on any given day and turn in writing assignments according to the class schedule. Late homework will not be accepted; however, if a student must miss class and therefore cannot turn in homework, it may be submitted by e-mail (only if the student cannot attend class). Attendance is crucial; many of the assignments will be done in class. Poor attendance will affect a student’s grade. NOTE: Take down the telephone numbers of two classmates who may be contacted for obtaining the day’s assignment.
