Canada has two official languages, meaning that international students can come to Canada to study either English as a Second Language (ESL) or French as a Second Language (FSL).
Many people choose to study ESL in Canada because of the many excellent ESL schools across the country and because of the neutral Canadian accent. Over the years, Canada has developed considerable expertise in the teaching of ESL because so many immigrants have required upgrading of their English skills. International students can study ESL for general, business or specific purposes. In addition, students can receive training in the teaching of ESL. Almost all universities and community colleges have ESL programs. In general, most private ESL schools are very flexible in terms of program requirements and intake dates.
Students enrolled in ESL or FSL programs for up to three months may study in Canada on a visitor's visa.

Different Types of ESL Programs. ERIC Digest.
THIS DIGEST WAS CREATED BY ERIC, THE EDUCATIONAL RESOURCES INFORMATION CENTER. FOR MORE INFORMATION ABOUT ERIC, CONTACT ACCESS ERIC 1-800-LET-ERIC TEXT: By the year 2000, it is anticipated that the number of limited-English-proficient (LEP) students aged 5-14 in the United States will reach approximately 3.4 million (Oxford, Pol, Lopez, Stupp, Gendell, and Peng, 1981). These are students who lack the necessary English skills for immediate success in an all-English curriculum. To date, nearly one teacher in four has had LEP students in class (O'Malley and Waggoner, 1984). In an effort to meet the needs of these students, school districts have instituted a variety of programs to provide instruction in English as a second language (ESL), each of which appears to be as different as the students themselves. However, regardless of program design, the minimal goal of an ESL program should be to provide each student with the English skills necessary to function successfully in an academic setting. WHAT FACTORS INFLUENCE THE DESIGN OF ESL PROGRAMS?

ESL Teachers Counselors Sample Programs
  • ESL Teachers
  • Counselors ESL Teachers ESL teachers have intensive contact with the students facing the greatest adjustment challenges in an international school - language difficulties and, frequently, significant cultural differences. For many of these students this will be the first time living in another country and as a result they have few of the skills that enable children to adapt easily to an international environment. All are making a double adjustment, to a new country and culture, and yet another school and culture and often, to a mixed ESL class. Students struggle to understand the school environment, other-culture students in their class and the world outside the school walls. ESL teachers therefore teach not only English but also school culture - from structuring essays and using research skills to playground behavior. Counselors Counseling is highly culture-dependent. Counselors in international schools deal not only with a large range of nationalities and a wide range of cultural differences including concepts of helping, of mental and physical health, of achievement, modesty, courtesy and hierarchy in addition to those relating to education. This requires a high degree of cultural sensitivity and an awareness of personal cultural stereotypes and mindsets, counseling style and presumptions.

Name-calling was on the rise and violence seemed imminent. Urbandale's ESL students come mostly from Bosnia but also from Sudan, Albania, Vietnam, Mexico, Poland and Brazil. These students identified a crisis and wanted to address it, but they weren¹t certain how to proceed. Meeting after school in the ESL classroom, these newcomer and refugee students began to create the "Peace Project," a student-centered, interactive presentation designed to improve relationships among immigrant students and their native peers. With the approval and enthusiastic support of the high school principal and their ESL teacher, a cadre of 30 students developed an outline for their "Peace Project" program. They decided to visit content area classes such as social studies.
