English Teaching Methodology Teaching English As a Foreign or Second Language This is a good basic text that outlines current methodologies in English Language Teaching and applies them to a variety of classroom contexts in a practical way. This is useful for teaching children or adults. Teach English: A Training Course for Teachers I used this book for a teacher-training program I conducted with Taiwanese junior high school teachers. It proved an invaluable resource. It provides detailed information and practical applications on a variety of English Language Teaching issues. Practical English Usage (Michael Swan) What's the difference between 'say' and 'tell' or 'each' and 'every'? If you can't explain quickly and concisely, then this is an indispensable resource for you. This book provides detailed explanations of grammar points that aren't always clear to native speakers. Don't tell your students "That's just the way it is," find the answer to their question and bring it to the next lesson! A common refrain in the staff rooms I've taught in is "Who's Got Swan? I need it!" A Course in Language Teaching: Practice and Theory This text provides a solid grounding in language teaching. It may be a little too involved for those who haven't taught before or who haven't done much reading about teaching languages. The references provided for each chapter make this a valuable resource for those building a professional library.

© S. Lemieux Teaching English as a Second Language : I have never taught ESL in Asia. I taught ESL as a volunteer in South Africa, and I worked as a second language teacher in a Canadian grade school. I cannot speak first-hand about the tribulations and rewards (both financial and personal) of teaching in Japan, Taiwan or South Korea. Stories abound of people flitting off to Japan or Korea and returning a year later with tens of thousands of dollars in the bank. As far as I've been told, these stories don't always reflect reality. However, if you're looking for a chance to immerse yourself in another culture, learn a new language, and possibly make a few bucks for travelling or paying off student loans, then teaching ESL might be for you. The first requirement for many jobs is that you are a native English speaker. Some require nothing more. Other requirements depend on the country and the job: Bachelor's Degree, CELTA/TESOL certificate, MA TESOL, and so on.

programs tend to focus on teaching adults, masters' degree or bookstore, there arenumerous books, teaching examples, and and met with the esl teachers there
    http://www.studenttravels.com/mag/05-00/teacher.cfm
Designed to motivate and prepare students to travel around the world. Monday, April 7, 2003 EFL vs. TEFL vs. ESL , or Learn to be a Teacher Because teaching English abroad entails a unique set of challenges (language barriers, cultural differences), and teaching itself is something of an art, there are a plethora of degrees available for Teaching English as a Foreign Language (TEFL). Known by a dizzying variety of acronyms, EFL certification programs explain how to assess your students' needs, prepare materials for classwork, test their progress and chart future curriculum. As well as how to answer grammar questions. Tulare says that there are a variety of methods that teachers are trained in, including the European-direct method (complete immersion in the target language, listening and repetition) and other effective alternate methods. If you are interested in obtaining an EFL certification, examine the curriculum for the courses and choose one that will teach you what you need to know for where you want to go. For example, RSA/Cambridge certification programs tend to focus on teaching adults, masters' degree programs are based more heavily on linguistics acquisition and may help with Western European teaching jobs, one-month hands-on courses might be best for diving into the Asian teaching market. Another option to actually getting an EFL degree is to do some research on your own. Head to the library or bookstore, there are numerous books, teaching examples, and workbooks that help you plan your classes. Before I left to teach in China, I stopped by my local university and met with the ESL teachers there who work with immigrant students in the U.S. They were more than happy to let me sit in on a few classes, to give me tips and advice. It was invaluable in helping me prepare for my classroom experience.

  • What kind of certification or training is required to teach ESL to adults? Where can I get training? Are there any local universities that offer degrees in TESL? What kinds of jobs are available? ... Where can I find out about job openings?
  • 1. What kind of certification or training is required to teach ESL to adults? To teach ESL in the K-12 system in Illinois, a teaching certificate plus an endorsement in ESL is required. However, to teach ESL in an adult education program in Illinois (usually a community college or a community-based organization), there are no state requirements. Each school or organization will have its own requirements. Commonly, a master's degree in Teaching English as a Second Language (TESL) or Linguistics is preferred, along with teaching experience. Preference may also be given to teachers who hold a certificate issued by a well-known training program, such as the Cambridge certificate. Because of the high demand for ESL teachers in Illinois, some programs may hire teachers who hold only a bachelor's degree and who have no specialized training in ESL. These programs may require or encourage inexperienced teachers to attend local professional development workshops offered through the Adult Learning Resource Center or other sources.

    Education L530:
    Teaching Adults to Read
    Overview
The 1993 National Adult Literacy Survey determined that 21-23% of Americans demonstrated skills at the lowest of five skills levels in prose, document and quantitative proficiencies. Another 25-28% demonstrated skills at the next level. The diversity of the needs and characteristics of these adults calls for an approach to instruction that is tailored to meet individual needs and considers strengths as well as weaknesses. Education L530: Teaching Adults to Read uses a collaborative approach to address topics in adult literacy such as determining characteristics and needs of adult learners, setting goals and planning assessment, and selection of strategies and resources. Collaborative tasks will include joint problem solving and peer feedback through asynchronous conferencing. In addition, each student will have the opportunity to focus on a self-selected program area in the field of adult literacy for individual study.

May 3, 2001. My EFC Experience by Kellie Goncalves Working as an ESL teacher for English For Children has been one of the most remarkable experiences yet. As a recent college graduate wanting to explore the world of teaching abroad I chose to come to Vorarlberg due to my fondness of children. Many of the jobs offered within the ESL arena are primarily aimed at teaching adults. As a result of working for EFC, I have been fortunate enough to gain experience-teaching children of all ages, teenagers and adults. Due to the small sizes of my classes has enabled me to become a more confident teacher in a short amount of time. I have been able to manage my students and incorporate my own ideas into teaching English as a second language. And while Kurt and Nikki Leidinger have already laid down the foundation to their alternate teaching methods such as using cards, authentic materials, singing and dancing, they welcome new ideas and creations from their current teachers. Indeed creativity is a large aspect for any teacher of any subject, however EFC offers more creative opportunities for both its teachers and its students because of its emphasis and assurance of orally mastering a language in a fun and stress free environment. The amount of knowledge I have received as a first year teacher has been immense.
