Using Technology to Prepare for Standardized Testing
February 2001 Mrs. Barbara Hinojosa, Principal at the Kennedy Elementary School in Mercedes, Texas, talks about how a 4th grade class used technology as a learning tool to prepare students for the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) test. She offers tips about how other schools can build an environment where students achieve their educational goals using multiple technologies. "Earlier this month, our fourth grade class at the Kennedy Elementary School spent an entire day preparing for the Texas Assessment of Academic Skills (TAAS) test in writing. To prepare for the tests, we held a Power TAAS! Day where all of our students - both English and Spanish speaking students - reviewed the material they had been learning over the past month using various technologies - computers, Internet and other software programs. The goal was to help students prepare for the upcoming TAAS test and minimize their anxiety about the test by utilizing our technical resources. Our approach was to assign each teacher a section of the curriculum required by our state standards. Teachers were then asked to build their lesson plans and project-based activities to include technology. Students rotated between 9 work stations, where they used technology to participate in learning exercises that covered a state mandated curriculum objective as required by the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) guidelines. We quickly saw that by integrating technology into the learning activities, and making these technical tools central to classroom activities, the atmosphere in the classroom changed. Students were excited to participate. We also saw that by breaking the class into small groups, teachers had more time to help students who were struggling with various components of the lesson.

    Teacher Education Program (TEP) Standards Following are standards for the GSU Teacher Education Program that identify what graduates should know and be able to do in order to experience success as beginning teachers. These standards focus on factors that lead to (1) improved student learning for those who are in the charge of a beginning teacher and (2) improved socialization into the culture of today's schools. These standards have been identified based on the input of P-12 educators who serve in various roles (i.e. superintendent, principal, consultant, teacher) and GSU faculty and administrators. Published standards such as INTASC and NBPTS standards, the standards of other state educational agencies and colleges of education and professional literature were reviewed to provide more informed dialogue and decision- making.

Click on TAKS Mathematics Objective Correlation Above Beginning in 2003, a new state assessment system, the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS) , will be administered to students at grades 3 through 11.The graduating class of 2005 will be required to pass the new TAKS assessments in order to graduate. The PassAssured Pharmacy Technician Training Program may supplement the mathematics curriculum while addressing many of the TAKS objectives. We have correlated and documented the Grade 11 Exit Level Mathematics TAKS objectives with the training program. Educators may use these correlations as they develop lesson plans and prepare students to pass the TAKS. The high school Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) are based on specific courses. There is no state-mandated course sequence therefore some of the high school TAKS mathematics objectives contain student expectations from eighth grade. Social Science Illinois Learning Standards Resources The benchmark indicators help to further expand or develop the benchmarks and standards. Like the benchmarks, the indicators are not exhaustive, but are guides and identifiers that break down the standards and benchmarks and are useful in alignment of curricula, assessment, instruction and staff development strategies. For each learning area, a listing of learning activities has been developed for the standards and used by teachers. These are suggested, not required, activities designed to stimulate ideas for teachers at all benchmark levels. These samples are coded for alignment to the goal, standard, and in some cases, to specific benchmarks. The intent is for the work samples to be used as measuring guides to judge your own student work, but not as work that is required to meet a standard. The North Carolina Technology Competencies for Educators were established to ensure that all educators in North Carolina are able to use information technologies to enhance teaching, learning, and general productivity. The competencies were developed by the North Carolina School Technology Users Task Force (October 1995), a task force of K-12 educators, community college representatives, and university faculty. In March 1996, the North Carolina State Board of Education approved these competencies for all NC educators (inservice) as part of the five-year cycle for license renewal. Effective April 1999, all beginning teachers who apply for an initial teaching license in North Carolina must demonstrate mastery of the North Carolina Technology Competencies for Educators. The competencies are divided into two parts: Basic Technology Competencies that support and enhance professional productivity, information access, collaboration, and communication among educators and Advanced Technology Competencies that enable educators to use multiple forms of technology to enhance teaching and learning. A list of the Basic and Advanced Technology Competencies appears below.
Candidates for initial licensure will demonstrate mastery of the technology competencies by constructing a portfolio. Evidence in the portfolios will be assessed for adequacy by a team of teacher education faculty and public school teachers at the institution of higher education
