Culture
Estonia's native folklore survived centuries of foreign domination thanks largely to a rich oral tradition of songs, verses and chants on subjects like the seasonal cycle, farming the land, family life, love and myths. The oldest Estonian song type, going back to the first millennium BC, is the runic chant, based on lines of 8 syllables with a theme gradually developing from line to line. Modern Estonian literature began in the early 19th century with the poems of Kristjan Jaak Peterson. The national epic poem, Kalevipoeg (Son of Kalev), was written in the mid-19th century by Freidrich Reinhold Kreutzwald. The giant of 20th century Estonian literature is novelist Anton Hansen Tammsaare. Novelist Jan Kross and poet Jaan Kaplinski have recently received international acclaim. Like Finnish, Estonian is a Finno-Ugric language, which sets it apart from Latvian, Lithuanian and Russian (all members of the Indo-European language family). It's a very Nordic-sounding language with lots of deep 'oos' and 'uus'. Lutheranism and Orthodoxy are the main religions, but only a minority of Estonians profess any religious beliefs. Estonia. A Reference Book 1993 haldjas (sprite). During the development of Estonian peasant culture in the 1st millennium AD, spirits associated with the growth of crops and fertility attained pivotal importance. The most important holiday was Christmas, which was endowed with fertility magic. The concept of Titanic heroes was borrowed from Scandinavia; the formation of various landforms was associated with the activity of Titans. After Christianity was introduced in the 13th century, the belief in spirits blended with the cult of Catholic saints. The saints' name-days were celebrated using ancient pagan rites. The Lutheran Church was also unable to supplant native beliefs; this occurred only in the 18th and 19th century, when the Herrnhuter beliefs and later religious sects became more widespread. Estonian folk culture has developed in contact with German and Slavic cultures. As a result of German conquest in the 13th century, Estonians remained peasants for centuries, and kept to their traditional culture. The towns on the other hand became German cultural provinces. Because the peasants were bound to the land, the differences between parishes (e.g., dialects and national dress) became more pronounced. Estonians lived in rehi

For Estonians, being a small nation, their language has a key role in maintaining their national identity. Slightly more than one million people speak Estonian, which belongs to the Balto-Finnic group of the Finno-Ugric languages. Thus Finnish is closely related to Estonian (the similarity is comparable to that between Italian and Spanish), while Hungarian is a more distant relative (approximately as close as Polish to Italian). There are many dialects in spoken Estonian; standard Estonian is based on the North-Estonian dialect. The Latin alphabet is used in written Estonian. Of its 32 letters, 5 occur only in foreign words. The 27 phonemes include 9 vowels and 18 consonants. The letters of the Estonian alphabet are as follows: Estonian names consist of Christian name(s) and surname. No patronymic is added. During the Reformation, Lutheranism spread, and the church was officially established in Estonia in 1686. Still, Estonians generally tend not to be very religious, because religion through the nineteenth century was associated with German feudal rule. In 1992 there were 153 Lutheran congregations in Estonia with an estimated 200,000 members. Active members totaled about 70,000 Among other religions in Estonia in the early 1990s there were eighty-three Baptist congregations with about 6,000 adult members, as well as about fifteen Methodist and several Seventh-Day Adventist congregations. Estonia's small Roman Catholic community was visited by Pope John Paul II during a tour of the Baltic states in September 1993, and the Dalai Lama came to Estonia soon after independence, in October 1991. Country Info Estonia Introduction Estonia General Data Estonia Maps Estonia Culture ... Estonia Time and Date Estonia Culture Back to Top The scope and importance of Estonian literature has steadily increased since the period of national awakening in the 19th century. Open to cultural and literary influences of western Europe, Estonian literature developed a diversity of styles, ranging from Neoclassicism to bold experimentation. After World War II, Socialist Realism dominated literary expression. Both Estonian classics and the works of contemporary authors have been translated into many languages. The beginning of professional theatrical art in Estonia is closely connected with the creation of the Vanemuine Theatre in Tartu in 1870. Tallinn has several theatres, including an opera and ballet theatre, a drama theatre, a youth theatre, and a puppet theatre. While more than 100 newspapers were published in Estonia during the Soviet era, some with circulations in excess of 100,000, acute shortages of newsprint after independence restricted output. In addition, market economics resulted in substantial increases in publishing costs and therefore in drastic price increases.
