    Geographical Overview
Source: Estonia. A Reference Book 1993 THE REPUBLIC OF ESTONIA Eesti Vabariik in Estonian, lies on the eastern shores of the Baltic Sea. The name Eesti is apparently derived from the word Aisti , the name given by the ancient germans to the people living notheast of Visla GEOLOGICAL. The extensive Ordovician limestone plateau in northern Estonia forms a steep bank - called the Baltic (North-Estonian) Glint (up to 56 m in height) - on the shores of the Gulf of Finland. A smaller Silurian limestone glint forms part of the northern coastline of the Estonian islands, Saaremaa and Muhu. The Gulf of Finland in the north and the Baltic sea in the west. Estonia shares land borders with Russia to the east and Latvia to the south. Estonia comprises now an area of 45,215 sq. km., making it larger than, for instance Denmark, Switzerland, Holland, Belgium and Albania in Europe. You are welcome to visit the clickable map of Estonia The most important mineral resources are embedded in the Ordovician bedrock of Northern Estonia: oil shale or kukersite (reserves estimated 6,000 million metric t) and phosphorite (700 million metric t). Limestone is used in the production of cement, lime, building stone, etc. The Cambrian blue clay, with outcrops on the north coast, is used in the manufacture of bricks, drainage pipes and cement.
