For the sake of briefing, three most unique nationalities are described below. The Hammer The Karo Numbering about 1000, the Karo live on the east bank of the Omo River. They used to herd cattle but having lost large numbers of their animals to disease they turned to agriculture. They are closely related to the Hammer keeping some cattle with them and exchanging goods such as pots with them. They speak virtually the same language as the Hammer. Moving enough is watching the Karo preparing themselves for a celebration or dance when they decorate their bodies with a chalk paint often imitating the spotted plumage of a guinea fowl. The Karo excel in face and torso paintings. Elaborate facemasks are created using locally found white chalk, yellow mineral rock, pulverized iron ore and black charcoal.

http://missions.itu.int/~ethiopia/culture.html
Ethiopia is a country of approximately 57 million people of many diverse and colorful ethnic backgrounds — a melting pot of ancient Middle Eastern and African cultures. It is also a country where recently may changes have taken place, but where many ancient customs and traditions remain intact. With a population of about 57 million, Ethiopia represents a melting pot of ancient Middle Eastern and African cultures evident in the religious, ethnic and language composition of its Semitic, Cushitic, Omotic and Nilotic peoples. The Ethiopian peoples comprise about seventy eight nationalities of which the Amhara and the Oromo constitute the majority, with about 60 percent of the total population.
Approximately 85 percent of the population lives in the rural areas. The annual population growth rate is about 3 percent, and the economically active segment, between ages 14 and 60, is about 50 percent of the total population.
Amharic, Oromiffa and Tigrigna are the major languages used by two third of the population. Amharic is the official language of the Federal Government. English is the medium of instruction in secondary schools, junior colleges, and universities, and is widely used in business transactions, particularly in banking and insurance. Arabic and Italian are also widely spoken.
Christianity and Islam are the main religions practised in Ethiopia. Other traditional religions are also practised by a small section of the population, particularly in the South. There is freedom of religious practice in Ethiopia.

Ethiopia; Ancient History, Modern Times
From the great Ethiopian scholar and writer Tsegaye Gebre-Medhin, we learn that the name Ethiopia is a combination of 3 ancient Egyptian words. Et - truth and peace
Op - up / upper
Bia - land, country
So the rulers of ancient times, the Egyptians, viewed Ethiopia as a Land of Upper Truth or Country of Higher Peace, or literally, Truth and Peace in the Upper Lands. This was unfathomable to the Europeans, who tended to use the term Abyssinia, or Abyss-in-Jah. Some things are just too deep for mere mortals to comprehend; the evidence is in the etymology and nomenclature. Amhara, Amharic: Origin and Meaning We also learn that the Amhara language was created in the 13th century from kamito-semitic (Egyptian / Arabic / Hebrew) "esperanto" type mixtures. Geez, believed to be the language "in which Jah spoke first", was considered too Holy for common usage, and Amharic spread quickly. Every tribe, every clan, every sub-region of Ethiopia that spoke the new Amharic language became Amhara. What does it mean?

are the politically and culturally dominant ethnic group of Ethiopia. They are located primarily in the central highland plateau of Ethiopia and comprise the major population element in the provinces of Begemder and Gojjam and in parts of Shoa and Wallo. In terms of the total Ethiopian population, however, the Amhara are a numerical minority. The national population has usually been placed at between 14 and 22 million.
It is generally estimated that the Amhara, together with the closely related Tigre, constitute about one-third of this total population. One of the most recent estimates gives the number of native speakers of Amharic, the language of the Amhara, as approximately 7,800,000. (cf. Bender 1971:217)

With time, the term "art" has become to mean more than drawing and painting. To our understanding it has come to encompass a variety of expressive fields such as drama, theatre, music and much more. This fairly modern type of inclusion has made it quite a challenge to easily define art. "Culture", as one would expect, simply adds to the complexity. It is with this understanding and inborn knowledge of the unique, complex artistic nature of Ethiopia, that we are unable to give a single definition as to what Ethiopian Art and Ethiopian Culture is. Instead, we have outlined what we think are the most important components.

Money Culture - Ethiopian Style!
April 29, 2000 There is one thing that we Ethiopians are really good at: living for today, not worrying about tomorrow! After all, there is even the saying “lejochu endehon be-idilachew yadgalu”. And what a destiny many of them grow up to! One of poverty, unemployment, illiteracy and extremely limited opportunities. Sadly, frugality is considered a negative trait/attribute in our culture and we grow up confusing extravagance and frivolous spending with generosity. As harmful as these negatives are, there are positives as well. These are: Ekub : traditional savings association Edir : traditional insurance system Are Ethiopians in Diaspora any different? Do they handle their finances well? At least in the US, there is a decent portion of us here (arguably) that have managed to buy a home. Most of us own cars but that my not be anything to write home about given that many Ethiopians live above their means and are up to their ears in credit-card debt etc. “So do many others” one might say and true enough! But if we can pick up on those habits, why not also learn smart money management skills from our environment such as budgeting, thoughtful/planned giving, saving and investing? We certainly have the resources right here! In the final analysis, it’s not what you earn that matters it’s what you keep!

In a decision that is being hailed by Oxfam as a "Fantastic Victory" for the Make Trade Fair campaigners, Nestlé dramatically reduced their claim against the Ethiopian government from $6 million to $1.5 million and agreed to immediately donate the money back to be spent on famine relief. ADVERTISEMENT The agreement reached on 24 th January 2003, ended a long-standing property claim on the part of Nestlé Germany. The property, a meat processing business, had been nationalised in 1975 by the Ethiopian government and sold to a private investor in 1998. Ethiopia is currently facing a drought endangering the lives of many people.

You thought that the Ark of the Covenant, the ancient and dangerous shrine of the presence of God, was safely tucked away in a U.S. government warehouse - like you were shown in Raiders of the Lost Ark ? Think again. According to a United Press International story , the Ark may in fact be located in Axum, Ethiopia. An archbishop of the Ethiopian Coptic Church confirms this, in any case. ADVERTISEMENT

ADVERTISEMENT The Ark of the Covenant was the most famous object in the Tabernacle and Temple of the ancient Hebrews. Made of acacia wood covered with gold, the top of the Ark bore a carving of two winged cherubim. The cover of the Ark is called the "Mercy Seat" in the Authorised Version of the Bible. The Ark contained the two replacement tablets of the Ten Commandments, made to replace the tablets smashed by Moses; the rod of Aaron that budded; and a vessel of manna from the wilderness of Sinai.

With over 86 different peoples, the cultures of our communities are prominent in our lifestyle. With traditions going back to the days of Axum, and a strong religious setting, celebrations and festivals play an important part in our daily lives. Our greatest festival is "Timket" (Epiphany), where tourists are welcome to celebrate with us. But other festivals such as "Enkutatash" (the Ethiopian New Year, in September after the rains), "Maskal", "Gena" (Christmas), Id, and Easter are all glorious celebrations. In every region you will discover local festivals and ceremonies where you will be welcomed as an honored guest. Remember, when checking any dates, that Ethiopia still retains the Julian calendar, and we are unique in having thirteen months. Our traditional calendar remains almost eight years behind the Gregorian Calendar of the West. WELCOME TO ETHIOPIA. HISTORICAL ETHIOPIA NATURAL EHTIOPIA THE CULTURE OF ETHIOPIA ... Home
