Early History
Cushitic language speakers are believed to have been the original inhabitants of Ethiopia. They were driven out of the region by the Cushites in the 2d millennium B.C. The Cushites founded a new civilization which probably traded with the Egyptians, according to ancient Egyptian texts. The Egyptian name for Ethiopians was Habashat, which is the probable origin of the name Abyssinia. According to tradition, the Ethiopian kingdom was founded (10th cent. B.C. ) by Solomon's first son, Menelik I, whom the queen of Sheba is supposed to have borne. However, the first kingdom for which there is documentary evidence is that of Aksum (Axum), a kingdom which probably emerged in the 2d cent. A.D. , thus making Ethiopia the oldest independent country in Africa and one of the most ancient in the world. Immigrants (mainly traders) from S Arabia who had been settling in N Ethiopia since about 500 B.C.

History The history of Ethiopia, known to many as Abyssinia, is rich, ancient, and still in part unknown. Anthropologists believe that East Africa's Great Rift Valley is the site of the origin of humankind. The first recorded account of the region dates back to almost 5,000 years ago during the time of the Egyptian pharaohs, when the ancient Egyptians sent expeditions down the Red Sea in quest of gold, ivory, incense, and slaves. It is in the Afar region of Ethiopia where scientists discovered the remains of "Lucy" or Dinkenesh, meaning "thou art wonderful," as she is known to the Ethiopians. "Lucy" lived more than three million years ago, and her bones now rest in the Ethiopian National Museum. The country's rich history is woven with legends of King Solomon and the Queen of Sheba; the Ark of the Covenant that is said to rest in Axum; the great Axumite kingdom and the birth of Christianity; the rise of Islam; and the story of King Lalibela, who is believed to have constructed eleven rock-hewn churches, still standing today and considered the eighth wonder of the world. Ethiopia is the only African nation that was not colonized by European colonial forces. It was briefly occupied by the Italians between 1936 and 1941.

    Ethiopia - HISTORY
    * Ethiopia is the oldest independent country in Sub Saharan Africa. The earliest evidence of Ethiopian history was in around 1000BC when the Queen of Sheba visited King Solomon.
    * The first recorded kingdom in Ethiopia grew around Axum during the 3rd century BC. Axum was an offshoot of the Semitic Sabeam kingdoms of southern Arabia, it became the greatest ivory market in the north east.
    * Ethiopia influenced the state of Meroe in Sudan. Over the next few centuries, Axum encroached more and more on Meroe until, when Christianity became the state religion in the 4th century AD, Ethiopia conquered the kingdom.
    * Christianity was adopted in the country by a Syrian youth named Frumentius who grew up in Axum and converted the King; the youth was later made the first Bishop in 330 AD.
    * Axum conquered parts of Yemen and southern Arabia and remained a great power until the death of the Prophet Mohammed.
    * Islam was expanding which had the effect of cutting off Ethiopia from its former Mediterranean trading partners and allies, Muslims replaced the Egyptians in the Red Sea ports. Ethiopians were allowed to consecrate their Bishops in Cairo and pilgrims were allowed to travel to Jerusalem.
    * Unfortunately, the Ethiopians did not have such a good relationship with the pagan tribes in the south and pressure from these tribes forced the Ethiopian emperors to adopt the life of nomadic military commanders living in makeshift cities. The priests were forced to become monks and hermits. After some time these tribes were pacified and Ethiopia recovered enough to take the provinces of Amhara, Lasta, Gojam and Damot. At a similar time the capital was moved to the south to the Amhara province.

Zague Kings By 1150 a new line of Kings had taken power in Ethiopia. They are also Christians, but their capital was at Lalibela in Last and not at Axum. These people were Agau and the new line of Kings was called the Zague Dynasty. "Dynasty" means that the family of one rules for a longtime-father, son, grandson, etc. One of the greatest Zague kings was Lalibela whose greatest work was the building of many churches. The most important of these were the eleven churches he built at Lalibela, his capital. Lalibela The town of Lalibela is located high in the mountains and is a very interesting place. No place in Africa, and few other places in the world, have churches like these at Lalibela. They are not built stone by stone on top of the ground but have been cut out of the avoid rock from ground level downward. A large area was chosen and then trenches were dug, leaving one large solid piece of rock This great rock was cut our inside with pillars left to hold up the stone and walls. The largest of these churches is the Church of the Redeemer of the World. It is about 33 metres long, 22metres deep, and 11 metres high. Inside are 28 solid stone column which hold up the solid stone roof. Near this great church are the churches of Mary, Michael, and Golgotha (where the king is buried). The church of George is a beautiful church in the shape of a Greek cross. During these times there were few written records about Ethiopia. The existing records are usually about the Ethiopian church and the Patriarchate of Alexandria. Often the only contact the Ethiopia had with the outside Christian world was by way of Alexandria. From Axum to Alexandria was a long trip overland with many dangers. Since Sudan had a Christian king, he was a help. Egypt was now a Moslem country and this caused Ethiopia difficulty. The Moslems sometimes tried to make the Patriarch of Alexandria do as they wished. Because the Patriarch named the Bishop of Axum, the Ethiopian government had to send gifts to the Moslem rulers of Egypt each time they needed a new bishop. The Patriarch of Alexandria namd an Egyptian as bishop of Ethiopia, and in this way, Egypt had influence in Ethiopia.
