Ask Our Experts about the Ancient Near East... Fredrik T. Hiebert

Robert H. Dyson Assistant Curator, Fred focuses his research on the northern neighbors of the ancient Near East. He continues his long-term excavations at the Silk Road site of Anau, and the desert oases of Turkmenistan, and in alternate seasons he focuses on the maritime "Silk Road" through the Black Sea. The new Black Sea expedition , an integrated land-and-sea archaeological survey of trade, is a collaborative project with Robert Ballard, who recently uncovered evidence supporting the theory of a "drowned landscape" inundated by a catastrophic flood, which some link to the bibical story of Noah. They have also discovered more than 200 ancient settlements along the Turkish Black Sea coast and, using side-scan sonar underwater survey techniques, have found numerous shipwrecks. Shipwreck and land trade sites promise to provide a wealth of new information about ancient commerce throughout the region. Online journals of this project give eye-witness accounts of archaeologists in the field. The summer 1998 journal documents the land surveys , and the summer 1999 journal , written by a Penn undergraduate, details the underwater survey. Funding is provided by the

Members of Staff
Archaeology at Cardiff is taught in the School of History and Archaeology. Departmental staff research and teach over a wide range of topics, periods and regions. Full-time academic staff are complemented by a series of scholars working in the department as part of the field and analytical work that takes place in Cardiff. The department is especially strong in the Neolithic.
Dr Douglass Bailey Balkan Prehistory (2000) is an interpretive synthesis of the period from 6500-2500 BC in southeastern Europe. Other publications include The Archaeology of Value (1998, editor) and Prehistoric Bulgaria (1995, co-edited with Ivan Panayotov).
Professor John Evans
contributes to various elements of the MA. He has undertaken fundamental research in environmental archaeology, especially the study of river valley histories, the ecology of freshwater lakes and the analysis of land snails. His early publications are now classics ( Landsnails in Archaeology The Environment of Early Man in the British Isles An Introduction to Environmental Archaeology , 1976). His recent work reflects a shift to an interest in human agency in the environment, especially at the scale of close human interaction; this theme underlines his recent publications

ARCHAEOLOGY AND ETHNOLOGY OF EASTERN EUROPE:
YOUTH APPROACHING THE XXIST CENTURY The Congress will take place between April, 24th-27th, 2002, at the Department of Archaeology and Ethnology of Ukraine, Odesa, I.I. Mechnikov National University. The congress will act as an important multi-disciplinary discussion forum for researchers and students who are interested in Eastern Europe. Up until recently, and prior to the formation of the new Russian and Eastern European states, anthropology, archaeology and ethnography had remained isolated and contained. This congress provides the necessary stimulus for researchers and students from inside and outside Eastern Europe to discuss and debate contemporary issues. Scholars, post-graduates, M.A. and undergraduate students, who are researching different problems in archaeology, cultural anthropology and history, in particular spatial and temporal discourse, are invited to take part in the Congress. Contributions from those who are researching historical and theoretical archaeology and cultural anthropology are also invited. To become a Congress participant, please:

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM
The aim of the undergraduate program in the Department of Archaeology and History of Art is to provide a thorough and comprehensive understanding of archaeology, ancient history, and art. The curriculum includes practical as well as academic work. There will be field trips to museums and sites in Turkey, and the students will have the opportunity to participate in departmental survey/excavations and expeditions sponsored by other institutions. At the end of the program the student will emerge with a good knowledge and comprehension of most aspects of Near Eastern, Mediterranean, and European art and archaeology from Prehistoric period onwards. Emphasis will of course be placed on Anatolian civilizations since the environment around Bilkent provides an ideal opportunity for first-hand familiarity with the ancient sites and monuments of this country.
