philosophy of existentialism
Soren Kierkegaard was born on the 15 th of May 1813 in the Danish capital Copenhagen and into a wealthy and prominent merchant family that already included six children.
His father was a firmly committed to a strict approach to faith and life and sought to ensure that his family would grow up within a firmly Lutheran household. His father also appears to have been personally endowed with intelligence, imagination, spirituality, melancholy and a tendency towards feeling a strong sense of guilt - amongst his children Soren, at least, inherited all these traits.
During these years he continued to read very widely in line with his own interests and without seeking to promptly complete his degree. His father died in 1838 and this seems to have been instrumental in causing him to commit to finishing his formal studies and in 1840 was awarded a Magister (Doctoral) degree in Theology.
In September 1840 he became engaged to be married to Regine Olsen, who was then seventeen years old and a daughter of a member of the Danish parliament. In the event, however, he had second thoughts based on his own complex, brooding, personality. Although he had genuine feelings for Regine he seems to have felt that his strong philosophic vocation was too powerful and rendered him unsuitable for married life. He therefore withdrew from the engagement in the autumn of 1841. Regine Olsen later married, happily, elsewhere. His genuine feelings for her led him to specifically mention the whole episode in some of his books - he even, later in life, dedicated all his works to her.

Beyond Good and Evil : Prelude to a Philosophy of the Future

Represents Nietzsche's attempt to sum up his philosophy. In nine parts the book is designed to give the reader a comprehensive idea of Nietzche's thought and style. With an inclusive index of subjects and persons. Returning to a favorite theme, Nietzsche offers a wealth of fresh insights into the self-destructive urge of Christianity, the prevalence of "slave moralities" and the terrible dangers in the pursuit of philosophical or scientific truth.

In order to find something must we not know beforehand that it is there? Indeed we must! First and foremost we can only look if we have pre-supposed the presence of a thing to be looked for. Originally published in German under the title Holzwege, this collection of texts is Heidegger's first post-war work and contains some of the major expositions of his later philosophy. Although translations of the essays have appeared individually in a variety of places, this is the first English translation to bring them together as Heidegger intended. It is an invaluable resource for all students of Heidegger, whether they study philosophy, literary theory, religious studies, or intellectual history.

Friendly to Continental Philosophy
Philosophy Department Earlham College Graduate Programs in Continental Philosophy." let me know "Continental philosophy" means the serious, non-analytic study of the history of philosophy. I do not believe that continental philosophy is best studied in analytic departments. The following list includes the exciting departments in the US, which offer compelling and thought-provoking philosophy. The schools are in alphabetical order. This is not a ranking. Of course these schools are not equal in quality or in friendliness to Continental philosophy. I provide more information about some graduate programs (a very brief description and the list of the faculty). Hopefully, there will eventually be such information for all departments. Any input in this effort is appreciated. If you are looking for a Continental graduate program, you need to get current information on these schools (from their catalogues, from their web sites, or from their current students) and make your decision in that light. This list provides these links in order to make that job a little easier.

303 Moses Hall We will read the works of the most important theistic, atheistic, and agnostic existential thinkers. The course will be organized around various attempts to reinterpret the Judeo/Christian God, and to determine in what sense, if at all, such a God is still a living God. We will study Dostoyevsky's and Kierkegaard's attempts to preserve a non-theological version of the God of Christianity, as well as Nietzsche's and Beckett's attempts to save us from belief in any version of God offered by our tradition. We will view and discuss three films that deal with related issues. Hubert Dreyfus Homepage Lectures Syllabus Paper Topics/Downloads ... My Little Corner of Existentialim
What is Existentialism? Existentialism is the philosophy that places emphasis on individual existence, freedom, and choice. Existentialism stresses the individuality of existence, and the problems that arise with said existence. Because there is so much diversity in the philosophy of existentialism, a concrete definition is hard to put down. Certain themes are common to almost all existential writing, which helps mark the writing as such. The term itself suggests one major theme, the stress on concrete, individual existence, and on subjectivity, individual freedom and choice. The idea of the highest ehthical good can be found in philosophy since the days of Socrates and Plato. It was generally held that this good was the same for everybody; as a person approached this moral perfection, she/he became morally like the next person approaching this moral perfection. Kierkegaard reacted to this way of thinking by saying that it was up to the individual to find his or her own moral perfection and his or her own way there. "I must find the truth that is the truth for me. . .the idea for which I can live or die" he wrote. Other Existentialists have followed along this way of thinking, one must choose one's own way, make their own individual paths without the aid of univeral ideas or guidance. Subjectivity is also important to Existentialism. Passionate choices and actions are important. Personal experiance and acting on one's own convictions are essential to arriving at personal truths. A better understanding of a situation is gained when one is in the middle then watching from the sidelines with a detached view. Systematic reasoning and acting is avoided at all costs in Existential thought. Kierkegaard and Nietzsche are noted for their random, unsystematic way of exploring their ideas, using many different literary syles to express themselves.

Existentialism
Existentialism is a philosophical movement or tendency that began around the 19th century. There are two basic claims of existentialism: Failure of objective, rational philosophy and Issues involving technology. The most powerful theme expressed by all existentialists is that of the lone individual against society. The philosophical existentialists divide roughly between the atheistic and the religious.
