  • Abstract:
Expert systems provide pre-selected rules for decision-making within specialized domains of knowledge, but are limited by the fixed choices and by the date of the expert opinions embodied in the decision rules. Open systems, by contrast, allow user formulation both of the potential decisions as well as of the decision elements leading to each decision, while quantitating the contribution of each element to each potential decision. Open systems can then calculate the best decision, the analysis of variance, the logical inconsistency of selections, and the performance consistency of ratings by utilizing the mathematical techniques of the analysis of queueing and renewal with matrix cognition.
Introduction:
Artificial intelligence encompases such diverse activities as game playing, automated reasoning, natural language, automatic programming, machine learning, robotics and vision, software tools, modeling human performance, and expert systems for complex decisions (1). Complex medical decisions are central in each phase of clinical care (2), and are usually based on decision elements or findings derived from a single patient by the clinical team (3). The discovery of decision elements particular to a given patient is a major task for the clinical team, and a necessary prelude to initiating medical action for the patient (4). The triad of discovery, decision, and action constitutes a core for the analysis of each phase of clinical care (3).

Computer science and molecular biology caught the scientific imagination during the same era-the mid-1940s and '50s. Fascinated by the computers he encountered as a youth at the American Institute, which were barely more sophisticated than desk calculators, Joshua Lederberg sought opportunities to incorporate the machines into his work. His opportunity came in the mid-1960s at Stanford, where, in collaboration with computer scientists Edward A. Feigenbaum and Bruce Buchanan and chemist Carl Djerassi, Lederberg developed DENDRAL (DENDRitic ALgorithm), one of the first "expert" or "knowledge-based" systems. DENDRAL was designed to further two goals. The first was to aid scientists by determining the molecular structure of a chemical compound of known composition. The second was to investigate the combination of acquired knowledge and experience and inductive reasoning that a human would use to solve similar problems. Lederberg was involved in other early computer science, artificial intelligence, and cooperative communications projects, like SUMEX-AIM (Stanford University Medical EXperimental-Artificial Intelligence in Medicine). In a very early realization of the Internet, remote users could connect to a mainframe at Stanford to collaborate on problems that applied the methods and theories of artificial intelligence-the use of computers in complex decision making-to questions of medical science and medical diagnosis.

Announcing ... a Meeting of the Computer Society (COMP-16) Seattle Section:
Tuesday, May 8, 2001
7:30 PM - 9:00 PM University of Washington, Bothell, UW1 building, room 315 (map and directions) The IEEE Seattle Section's Computer Society will host a presentation titled: "Expert Systems: A Foundation for the IT Practitioner" by Richard Charette, Senior Software Architect in the Advanced Development Group at Calico Commerce, Inc.
Abstract
Expert systems (ES) have often been perceived as silver bullets, cryptic systems, exotic solutions or major disasters. But in reality, thousands of ES have been deployed successfully since the 70's and many of them are still operational and fully reliable. In fact, the use of ES when appropriate may provide a competitive advantage to an organization. The technology underlying ES has reached today a level of maturity that makes it an attractive solution when appropriate. This presentation demystifies ES to the computer science and IT professionals in the industry, and helps them understand how these can become part of their potential CS/IT toolset. The presentation will first introduce ES, their place within the broad field of computer science, and their relationship with artificial intelligence technologies.

The Computer Security Expert Assist Team (CSEAT) was established at the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) to improve federal Critical Infrastructure Protection (CIP) planning and implementation efforts by assisting governmental entities in improving the security of their information and cyber assets. The CSEAT accomplishes this by performing a review of an agency's computer security program. The review is based upon a combination of proven techniques and best practices and results in an action plan that provides a federal agency with a business case-based roadmap to cost-effectively enhance the protection of their information system assets. This CSEAT has developed a set of evaluation criteria that is being used to review both agency and high-risk IT security programs. This criteria is continually evolving based upon lessons learned from reviews, feedback we receive from those reviewed, and feedback we receive from IT security professionals. The CSEAT welcomes your feedback on the current criteria and requests that you email us any suggestions for modifications that you have. Each suggestion will be reviewed and taken into consideration while evolving the criteria. A CSEAT guidance document that describes the CSEAT methodology will be developed in the near future.

Expert System
An expert system is a computer program capable of considering a vast body of knowledge, reasoning, and then recommending a course of action. The major difference between the modern technology of expert systems versus classical algorithmic techniques is the ability to develop systems that infer answers from complex and incomplete knowledge bases. In other words, just as an acceptable answer although not necessarily the optimal answer can be determined by a human, given incomplete and perhaps unrelated facts, an expert system can be made to choose rational and perhaps multiple answers from a set of rules and facts. Perhaps the easiest description of an expert system comes from Digital Equipment Corporation's XCON. This system is used to configure complex computer systems and was once referred to as R-1 (as in "we are one"). R-1 was the short hand answer to the question " What is an expert system ?" and was developed in 1980. The first expert system was developed by Edward Shortliffe in 1975. The HAL computer of "2001" is a well-known example of a futuristic expert system. The Decision Maker expert system consists of an explanation portion , a knowledge acquisition portion , a database portion , and a report portion Explanation Portion Top Next Prev Bot The explanation portion of the expert system software displays a decision tree to assist the user in determining why a question is being asked or a solution has been identified. The decision tree (explanation ) model for the system can be found in Robert Tannenbaum and Warren Schmidts's work which appeared in Harvard Business Review in 1954, and in the books "Leadership and Decision Making" by Victor Vroom and Philip Yetton from
