Anton Wagner Creating a Canadian Imaginative Background: Herman Voaden and Symphonic Expressionism in Canadian Dance Studies , edited by Selma Odom and Mary Jane Warner Toronto: Dance Collection Danse (to be published 2002) In his influential 1864 essay “The Function of Criticism at the Present Time,” Matthew Arnold suggested that critics should always seek “to learn and propagate the best that is known and thought in the world, and thus to establish a current of fresh and true ideas” (1968: 28). For Arnold, a period of “true creative activity” and the development of new artistic forms was directly linked to the “current of fresh ideas” provided by genuine criticism. In Canada during the first three decades of the twentieth century, artists faced almost insurmountable obstacles to the creation of a distinct indigenous art. The country lacked a large educated public supportive of indigenous creation, significant government or private support of the arts, and a basic cultural infrastructure that could produce an artistic flowering through the stimulus of new ideas and artistic forms. Artists themselves had to establish links to international artistic currents and determine which forms and ideas to incorporate into their artistic practice in Canada. The attempt by Herman Voaden (1903-1991) to establish a distinct, multimedia “Canadian 'Art of the Theatre'” reveals the rich and complex intermingling of Canadian and international cultural influences during the 1920s and 1930s. Voaden's attempt to create in Toronto a “symphonic” theatre art form in which dance movement was an integral part also reveals the tremendous challenges faced by artists to win critical and public support and to transform artistic ideas into actual artistic expression.

The Lyon Opera Ballet is unusual in that it's a classically trained company devoted entirely to performing the work of contemporary choreographers. "You could say we're classical dancers who don't want to do classical stuff any more, and are open to learning new techniques," says artistic director Yorgos Loukos interviewed by phone from France.

BY REBECCA TODD It seems contradictory to make dance about language, but leave it to the French to try. And leave it to Maguy Marin to actually pull it off. When I first saw Maguy Marin's Lyon-based company perform 11 years ago, it was a revelation. I had just arrived in L.A. and found myself in a world where dance was cool, casual and virtuoso, stressing speed and endurance, irony and pastiche (this was the late '80s, after all). I was young and romantic and, uncool though it was, I craved emotional performance something with its guts hanging out. Compagnie Maguy Marin's performance at the Los Angeles Arts Festival was my first live taste of the European expressionism that had been horrifying American critics. One of the works they performed was May B , a dance theatre piece based on the writings of Samuel Beckett. The movement was pared down simple, repetitive and intense, unapologetically emotional but not in a simple way, and never corny. For me, the choreographer had managed to distill something I couldn't put into words, but which was at the heart of Beckett's writing.

A former MIT architecture student, Solomons' postmodern approach to dance making combines a fascination with puzzles and architectural design with an attention to everyday movement. In partnership with WGBH's experimental New Television Workshop program in the late 1960's, Solomons created "City/Motion/Space/Game," an innovative, two-channel video work in which Solomons dances at the Prudential Center Plaza, the Public Garden, and in public spaces throughout the city. Greater Boston Arts meets Solomon on his return to MIT more than 30 years later as he continues to put his abstract dance philosophy into practice in ordinary places.

Denishawn Dancers program. Katherine Dunham's Ballet Negre made its only appearance at the Beaux Arts Ball in Chicago. The attempt to create and sustain a Negro ballet company did not succeed. (The first Negro ballet performed European-style pantomimes at the African Grove Theater in New York City, in 1821, under the direction of James Hewlett. Dancers doubled as actors in plays by Shakespeare.) White recitalists were still reacting to the 1930 police raid on recital halls, justified by an 1852 law supported by the New York Sabbath Committee, which stated "no performances on Sunday, including Negro or other dancing." The Denishawn School came to an end. Ruth St. Denis began planning for her Temple School of Spiritual Art, and Ted Shawn envisioned an all-male dance company. Dancers were divided in their thinking about the German movement in modern dance, and particularly about Mary Wigman. Doris Humphrey warned aspiring dancers about copying Wigman's style and urged them to concentrate on developing their own style. Martha Graham's "Primitive Mysteries" was hailed as a masterpiece of choreography. Helen Tamiris, one of the first white dancers to use black spirituals (1927), announced performances for the newly organized Modern Dance Repertory Company. The Beginning: Hemsley Winfield and Edna Guy An actor by profession, Hemsley Winfield appropriated the philosophy of the Harlem Renaissance with reference to developing a sensitivity about the depth and breadth of black culture and the role of the arts in projecting "the new Negro." Hemsley attended concerts by leaders in the American modern dance movement and created a style of choreography that was part German Expressionism, eclectic, and African American. As organizer and director of the Negro Art Theatre Dance, he had directed a small group of dancers as early as 1928 for appearances in plays written by his mother Jeroline. The decision to pursue a dance career resulted from his successful appearance as a substitute dancer in his company's production of Oscar Wilde's " Salome." The first appearance of his dance company, the Bronze Ballet Plastique, on March 6, 1931 in Yonkers, New York, was sponsored by the Benefit for Colored Citizens Unemployment Relief Committee.
