Howard's Falkland War
Zoe Reynolds chronicles the bizarre tale of the Tampa and how a group of refugees bacame pawns in a bigger political game.
MV Tampa The Australian crew of the Norwegian flagged Enterprise held a meeting of ratings, officers and master in Sydney during the height of the Tampa crisis. Word has reached them that the Norwegian fleet worldwide are flying their flags at half mast. They agree to do likewise as the vessel sails out of Sydney and on to Newcastle, Port Kembla and Hobart. "It is in mourning for all the people who could now die at sea because of the actions of PM John Howard," said bosun Terry Munday. It was a fitting protest against the Australian Government's cynical contempt of maritime law all for political gain in the lead up to a federal election. The saga began in the Indian Ocean 150 kilometres north of Christmas Island on August 26. An SOS from a sinking ship. Search and rescue authorities in Australia pick up the message spelt out on the deck of a wooden boat during a routine flight. Coastguard broadcasts the May Day to all vessels in the region. True to maritime tradition and the law of the sea the Captain Arnie Rinnan master of the Norwegian ro-ro Tampa, on route from Fremantle to Singapore takes the call. With more than 12 centuries of maritime history in his veins and 45 years as a mariner all the the Norwegian master¹s instincts and maritime wisdom led him to change course, without reservation, and rescue the men, women and children from certain death. His second instinct was to head for shore. Duty bound he headed for the nearest port, Christmas Island.

    Falklands History

Until they achieved world recognition in 1982, the sparse, windswept Falkland Islands were a seemingly isolated and largely forgotten backwater of the continually shrinking British Empire. Situated 350 miles (560km) off South America's east coast, The Falkland Islands or Las Malvinas are made up of two main islands and several hundred smaller outlying islands. With a population of around 3000, the majority of whom live in the country's capital Stanley, the Falklands are a rainy, weather-beaten place, whose economy relies chiefly on sheep farming and fishing. It's strange then, that this little cluster of outcrops has been a source of bitter political contention for over 250 years. First spotted No one can really be sure who can lay claim to having first spotted the Falklands - the Argentinians insist that various Spanish and Portuguese seamen, in particular Esteban Gomez of the 1522 Magellan expedition were the first to see the islands. Britain claims that the English navigator John Davis may have been the first person to sight the Falklands on his ship Desire in 1592. However, both sides' claims are much debated and undocumented by the original sources so should be taken with a large pinch of salt. The first undisputed sighting of the archipelago was by the Dutchman Sebald de Weerdt in around 1600.

Published for the very first time, this is the story of No 1 (Fighter) Squadron during Operation Corporate. The operation was also the Harrier's first war, and the fact that the squadron and its aircraft flew from a Royal Navy aircraft carrier alongside Sea Harriers of the Fleet Air Arm was testament to the versatility of the Harrier and the flexibility of it's pilots. The diary will use photographs, maps and documents never before seen to give the most complete picture possible of the Harrier's first war. Our thanks go to Air Chief Marshal Sir Peter Squire, Chief of the Air Staff, and commanding officer of No 1(F) Squadron during the Falklands conflict for allowing us to use his personal diary for this feature, and indeed for his painstaking work in producing what is a unique and valuable historic document.

    The Falkland Islands
A history of the 1982 conflict
    Preface to a conflict
The Falklands Conflict (2 April to 14 June 1982), was a unique period in the history of Britain and Argentina. Although war was never formally declared, the brief conflict saw nearly 1,000 lives lost and many more wounded. Described in such diverse terms as an 'outdated neo-colonial adventure', a 'fight for freedom and democracy' and a 'moment of national greatness', in some ways the conflict belonged more to the 19th than the 20th century. The Falkland Islands, which number some 700, lie around 300 miles off the coast of Argentina, and approximately 8,000 miles from Britain. In 1982 the population was justover 1,800. A number of smaller islands to the east and southeast, while legally separate from the Falklands, are administered from the capital of the Falkland Islands at Stanley. These comprise South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, none of which possess any permanent inhabitants. Initially, the crisis was not taken seriously by those not directly involved. But for many in Britain the issue was clear-cut. Argentina had taken, by force, British territory inhabited by British people and the issue had to be addressed. Patriotism, a quality considered dormant in many Britons since WWII, returned to the fore and principles such as duty, courage and resolution became enshrined in daily life, albeit for only a few months. Those outside of the UK found it difficult to comprehend that it was the issue of national honour and pride and the principle that international law must be upheld which was the driving force leading to Britain's largest military deployment for 30 years being sent 8,000 miles south to get the islands back. Clearly there were also historical factors which influenced the events of 1982.
