Heidi Taff Asst. Entertainment Editor -Wednesday, October 02, 1996 What does an American look like? What fads and fashions have we adopted into our heritage throughout the decades? To try and describe one common element would be a waste of breath. Chico State University's Museum of Anthropology's twelfth annual photo competition and show entitled, "America in Style: Fads and Fashions," documents Americans' true style through color and black and white photographs. Photos from all over the United States have been chosen and put on display for both their anthropological value as well as artistic content. On display are family snapshots as well as staged photos of grooming habits, jewelry and scenery landscapes. There were numerous photos of people in hats. Hats represent a big fad in America. People wear them to sport their favorite athletic team, to keep the sun out of their eyes, rain off the hair and countless other reasons. "Woman in a White Hat" was of a woman posing with a white straw hat on her head. The explanation underneath the photo said the rule of fashion was white hats only appear on Memorial Day and are closeted after Labor Day; two very traditional American holidays. Another photo, taken at a carnival, was of corn dogs, hot dogs and corn on the cob. "Diets aside, it would not have been fashionable to eat otherwise," read the caption.

Modern Designs or Fashion Fads? Design history has been a growth area from the 1970s. It is in many ways unfortunate that this growth has taken its main institutional form in polytechnics, where design history is on the syllabus of practical design students. Rightly or wrongly, it has been felt that with few exceptions, only the history of design of the past hundred years or so is relevant to future designers. The stress has been on the emergence of modern style and the effects of the Industrial revolution. As far as the designers of American vehicles were concerned, they displayed the unmistakable character of rationalized manufacturing methods, and by the late ‘50s, were influenced by the ‘spirit of the age’, where the cars were subjected to fashion fads like tail fins. These styling themes tended to be shortlived. One reason why European cars, especially German ones, retain their contemporary elements longer than other regional vehicles is that they refrain from the ‘spirit of the age’ phenomenon. British designs are unmistakable and lead to more effective results. This forms the basis of their somewhat exclusive role in the construction of uncompromising sportscars

How to Avoid Being a Fashion Victim Does your baguette bag clash with your pony hair mules? Here's how to look fashionable without overdosing on the trends. Difficulty Level: Easy Time Required: Varies Here's How:
  • Decide if you're wasting too much money on fads, by assessing the last five items you've purchased. If three or more are touted as the season's "must-haves," you're in danger of being a fashion victim. Examine your closet to see if more than half of your wardrobe is already out of style according to your favorite fashion sources. Now, ask yourself if you are buying fashion fads because you really like them or you use them like a fashion security blanket. If you decided you always buy all of the fads because you really like them, you're not telling the truth so you might as well just stop here.

    LIFESTYLE
    Piercing Questions for Corporate Climbers
By Sally Richards An old axiom, "Beauty is in the eye of the beholder," still rings true today. Many fashion fads diminish in favor as the seasons pass. Despite the hope that your business wardrobe will be timeless and classic, skirt lengths, tie widths, the size of shoulder pads, etc., are certain to transform almost any item of clothing into out-of-date status. Hair styles suffer the same temporary flash of favor. From flat to bouffant, from curly to sleek - beauticians must stay current to please their clients. Men are no exception. Their scruffy, spiked, often dyed crew cuts or buzz cuts of today will provoke the same smiles as their ponytails of bygone years. This fashion whimsy is of little importance when a shopping trip, a snip of the barber's scissors, or an hour or two with a fashion consultant can change the way you look. Appearances that can be converted to the mainstream at a moment's notice are of minor concern. A new suit, a new hair color - voila! However, some fashion fads are harder to change despite a belated realization that they may have negative career consequences. Some contemporary ideas of beauty can have permanent aftereffects. Many of today's trendy practices can place careers and general health in jeopardy.

out of 4 stars 9 p.m. Friday TV Land It's all good. OK, we're lying. The considerable impact that television has had on fashion fads and style obsessions over the past 50 years isn't all good. Otherwise certain silly teens would not have committed a cosmic follicle faux pas in the early 1980s by actually sporting A Flock of Seagulls hair-dos. Thank you, MTV. And how about the flamboyantly excessive shoulder pads worn by Joan Collins and Linda Evans on "Dynasty"? That soap operatic look in a somewhat more modified form became a signature fashion statement for many working women during the Reagan era. And a little bit of that wide-angle empowerment armor went a very long way. But whether the results are good, bad or just plain ugly, there's no denying the influential snap and crackle of pop culture's most visually pervasive medium. When it comes to setting a fashion agenda for the masses, TV has often been way ahead of the curve.

    Clothes make the woman
    http://www.jewishworldreview.com
BRACE yourself for tis prom season. I write not to complain of the limousines, hotel room orgies, or the environmentally unsound methods used by modern teens to invite each other to a mating ritual with theme. This generation, taught to revere Mother Earth and permitted only one school holiday called by its real name (Earth Day), blankets yards and homes with all things paper as their means of an invite even as Oregonians starve whilst sitting in trees to end logging and Charmin. Prom attire has proven to be the proverbial straw snapping my sartorial halter. Women's clothing these days generally gives me pause. "What of human dignity?" I cry. Prom night is bad taste writ large. I blame Britney Spears, Christina Aguilera and JonBenet Ramsey. These icons strut in alluring clothing at young ages. To say young women today dress like ladies of the evening is unfair to the ladies of the evening who have better taste and no hypocrisy on their goals. Pleading the case for modesty falls on deaf ears and apparently blind parents. Gender theorists aside, young men have raging hormones and the discernment of javelina. Parents permit their daughters to wear dresses that require either Frederick's of Hollywood undergarments or nothing between them and their B'dazzle dresses around high school males who find Pippi Longstocking a veritable temptress. Prom night sees strapless dresses, backless dresses, tight dresses, low-cut dresses, and, according to last week's Wall Street Journal, bare midriffs courtesy a bathing suit top and full-length skirt with a waist dipped sufficiently low to reveal the navel and local piercings there.

How NOT To Be A Fashion Victim
By Chan See Hoon 5 March 2002 Mango Fashion is fun. You wouldn't be a woman if you weren't just the tiniest bit interested in whether hemlines are up or down and what shoes are hot to have. Sadly though, not everyone of us is born with innate style. The good news is that style can be cultivated without falling prey to the "fashion victim" syndrome! Just play by these rules. And remember that style is an expression of who you are and not what you wear.
