Reasons for Children of the 80s to Feel Old

  • Well, I was born in 73', so I had the fortune of growing up in the 70's, 80's and 90's. Anyway, a little girl who lives across the street from my parents was playing with my daughter(which in itself makes me feel old, and I asked if her favorite rappers were Kriss-Kross. She turned to me with a very perplexed look on her face and asked" who is kriss-kross?"

  • You keep telling yourself that you're "not that old." When you see someone who's in their mid-late teens you keep wishing that you weren't that old. :) Submitted by: Celeste Date Added to the Site: Sunday 6 April 2003 Reasons for Children of the 80s to Feel Old
  • One of these comments below reminded me about that Cosby episode where 14 year old Theo told his dad that studying isn't important to him because he wanted an ordinary job like being a bus driver or garbage man, you know like "regular people". The Cos has him play make believe grown up and gives him some make believe money and takes half it away saying "see the government comes for the regular people first". LOL, that was a hilarious first episode to the best sitcom of the 80's. (That episode aired in 1984 if I'm not mistaken, almost 20 years ago!)

    • Program Overview
This is a general description of the Fashion Design Program.
    • Course List
The course list is a complete list of the core curriculum for the FADS program.
Program Overview Fashion design provides you with a key for entering the glamorous world of fashion! Create your own designs, work with beautiful fabrics, plan for major fashion shows, and initiate a "new look." The Fashion Design specialization is flexible to permit a minor in another subject. Depending on your special interest, you might choose from such areas as art, business, merchandising, or a broad-based background that will enhance your career opportunities. An important part of the program is the senior internship, a time when you can gain practical experience before graduation. Fashion design students have a number of special opportunities at Texas Tech. Field trips are available to nearby clothing and textile manufacturing plants and the Dallas Market Center. Other tour opportunities are provided throughout the program of study. Students have access to well-equipped laboratories for fashion design and production, as well as a museum on campus which features an extensive collection of historical textiles and fashions. Career opportunities for graduates may include designing couture or mass-produced fashions, pattern drafting, pattern grading, fashion illustration, fashion coordination, or styling. Those who have minor in business, mass communications, or art further expand the range of possible positions in industry - from designing, fabrics to owning, managing, or operating a private business.

It was a time of conservatism, it was a time of great social change. From the world of fashion to the world to politics, forces clashed to produce the most explosive decade of the century. In music, the three sounds were jazz, jazz, and jazz. The Jazz Age came about with artist like Bessie Smith and Duke Ellington. Youth ruled everything. From the young styles of dress to the latest celebrities. If it was young, it was the thing. It was the age of prohibition, it was the age of prosperity, and it was the age of downfall. It was the age of everything, and you'll find [almost] everything here. Thank you for visiting our site.

HULA HOOP Richard Knerr and Arthur "Spud" Melin, founders of the Wham-O Company, are the architects of the biggest fad of all time - the hula hoop!
In 1957, an Australian visiting California told them, quite casually, that in his home country, children twirled bamboo hoops around their waists in gym class. Most of us would have thought, "how nice" but for Knerr and Melin an idea spawned. They understood how popular such an item could be and proceeded to manufacture one made of plastic, Marlex specifically, a lightweight but durable plastic then recently invented by Phillips Petroleum. The name "hula hoop" came from the Hawaiian dance its users seemed to imitate. Talk about sales! Wham-O sold 25 million hula hoops in two months. Almost 100 million international orders followed. They were manufacturing 20,000 hoops a day at the peak of popularity. The faze was short-lived. But our young entrepeneurs were already onto another hot idea they had.

Bad Fads by Mark A. Long from the groovy to the rad to the just plain bad fad There was a time when "bad" meant "good" - and in the zany world of Bad Fads, that time is forever. Does your mother have an old photo of you - at the peak of your coolness - that your friends could bury you with today? Then like most of us, you've probably got a bad fad tale to tell - or not to tell. Mark A. Long's new book Bad Fads highlights some of the best and worst flash-in-the-pan crazes this century's seen. Long's book explores the human capacity for the absurd Most of these fads are going to make you snicker . But some of them will strike a familiar chord, and with any luck, you'll be fingering through your old photos and unbolting your bad fad closet for a good giggle - at your own expense. Bad Fads was illustrated in full color by Jim Fee and is published by ECW Press Contact Info Mark A. Long

#LS-24500, Price $89.00 Clothing choices play a role in almost every social problem from school violence and drugs to poverty and gangs. To many, the word "fashion" means Paris, models, and high prices. In reality, fashion is basic self-expression for the only animals on the planet who wear clothes. People don't merely wear clothes, they wear stories. They use style and fashion to tell the tale of their lives. This video explains that for youth, fashion is an attempt to reconcile two seemingly contradictory messages"I'm unique" and "I belong." Watch articulat and youthful commentators explain their own clothing choices.

    • Do people judge each other by clothing? Do they enforce unwritten "rules of dress" or engage in stereotyping? Does clothing influence behavior? Do dress codes work? What's cool? What's hot? Why? Where does fashion come from? Who influences how we dress? How does a fad become a trend and then a fashion?
