Fads, Fashion, and Funds
by Karima Lateef and Aisha Johnson
It is the 90's and everybody wants to wear all the right clothes. wearing clothes that do not have a name brand or a high price is considered a violation of the young generation's dress code. Teens of today are pressured by their peers to wear over priced clothing and footwear. To some, wearing high-priced clothes is a fad while to others it is fashion.
Money is not object
when I'm buying
clothes that I like...
Olivia Collier, a junior a West Philadelphia High, thinks that high priced clothes are just a fad. She feels clothing that has an unreasonable coast is a waste of money. "A lot of people out here are wearing this Tommy Hilfiger and DKNY and are not in the position to buy it. they are struggling financially, but they still buy these clothes because they do not want to be a fashion misfit." Olivia says she does not understand why someone would buy one shirt or one pair of jeans for fifty dollars each.
Some teenagers who are in high school concur that over priced clothes will not stay in fashion long. Why would someone spend so much money on clothing? Teens and adult varied in their answers.

HOMEFRONT, FASHION
Teen-fashion mysteries and the origins of fads
Shira J. Boss
Special to The Christian Science Monitor NEW YORK It's one of the great mysteries: Where do those crazy youth fads come from? How did wearing a rubber band as a bracelet get cool recently? And who was the first teen to walk off an airplane with a chunky buckled belt that doesn't just look like an airplane seat belt but is one? Not so puzzling is how some home-grown fashions make their way into stores. Designers and "cool hunters" who work for market-research companies are constantly out on the street scouting trends. When neat things trickle up to the racks of mainstream stores like The Limited, the insiders move on, under the watchful eye of companies like Lambesis in Del Mar, Calif. Lambesis is one of the many companies that puts an army of analysts and every market-research technique to work ferreting out the next new thing.

RETURN TO CATALOG OF TITLES Charles H. Betz, Family Life Consultant, Oregon Conference of Seventh-day Adventists Volume 6 Number 8 Fads, Fashion, and Peers Recently I was driving near a school and noticed two teenage boys, about 13, walking along: baggy pants, oversized coats, and the ubiquitous baseball caps turned backwards. I pondered the power of fads, fashion, and peers. Who started such a fad, I wondered. Yes, kids will have their heroesathletes, rock stars, movie celebrities they copy their clothing. How should Christian parents relate to current fads and fashions? It is natural for teens to pull away from parents. This process begins with adolescence. "In adolescence, for better or worse, children show their autonomy and independence from adults by their appearance. Actually, considering all the other ways kids can show autonomy and independence, most appearance issues are really fairly harmless. It's not worth the trouble to engage in control battles over them." Parenting Teens With Love and Logic , p. 161.

TAKE ADVANTAGE OF NEW FASHIONS OR FADS
Fashions and fads are constantly changing or being "re-invented". You can take advantage of this by providing a product or service that caters to contemporary fashions or lifestyles. Such a product or service may be something which does not yet exist, or it may be an item which already exists but would benefit from greater promotion. Alternatively, it could be something which existed in a past era an idea ready to be recycled (e.g. bell bottoms). Fashions offer longer-term business opportunities while fads are more intense and provide short-term opportunities. Because a fad experiences a rapid rise and fall in popularity, the opportunities presented require a more finely tuned response, first to provide goods, then to reduce inventories. Some Examples
  • The thriving T-shirt industry addresses a broad fashion opportunity, and at the same time caters to fads through the designs and messages which appear on the shirts. Many companies have targeted the "young urban professional" lifestyle, offering expensive foreign cars, high-quality homes and furniture, high-fashion clothing, and fine quality and trend-setting dining out experiences.
  • How To Do It
  • Focus on a basic subject area (e.g. toys, clothes, lifestyle, recreation or business).

Your final project is to prepare a corner for a Fashion and Fads class exhibition. The final project is optional, but you will find it is worth the effort. The exhibition may be for your class only, or it may be a bigger "happening" where other people are invited.
The exhibition corner is a group product. You and a few other students will work together in a group to prepare your exhibition corner. You and your group are also responsible for your own corner on the day of the exhibition. All the group corners together make up the fashion and fads exhibition. There are suggested topics for group corners on page 2 of your booklet but you could come up with ideas of your own. Use the "Steps in Preparing the Exhibition" on page 48 of the booklet, together with these project tips to guide you.
Note: There will probably be four students working together on the preparation of one exhibition corner, so there may be more than one corner on the same topic, e.g. two corners that present teenagers' wardrobes.
Click each of the links below for more information about each exhibition corner.

    Foods
Lunchtime is a great time to catch up with your friends, review those math notes, or just unwind from a busy morning of classes. Make the most of it by packing (or buying) delicious and nutritious school lunches.
    • Get in the habit of packing (or helping your guardian pack) your lunch the night before. It saves time in the morning (when you're probably running around looking for matching socks!) and allows more time to plan meals. Tired of turkey? Peanut butter and jelly passe? Try spreading veggie cream cheese on whole wheat bread and topping with sliced carrots, cucumbers or tomatoes. Hummus, a zesty Middle Eastern spread, is great on pita bread with sliced carrots or sprouts. Knock out soda from your routine. Try juice, water, or one of those cool, new yogurt shakes instead.
