Graduate Program
General Information
The new Fisheries Centre at UBC was formed as a unit of the Faculty of Graduate Studies and aims to focus and promote the multidisciplinary study of fisheries. Analytical tools developed in a broad spectrum of parent subjects, including biology, oceanography, economics, engineering, mathematics, sociology, planning and policy are employed in order to assess, appraise and forecast the impacts of both human and natural processes on fishery resources. Fisheries policy and management problems under study include assessment and management of artisanal and commercial food capture fisheries, recreational fisheries, coastal and watershed management, aquaculture biology and engineering, conflict resolution and the co-management of shared fishery resources, and the conservation of endangered exploited species in both marine and freshwater environments. This guideline is to complement the general regulations detailed by the Faculty of Graduate Studies . Students of the Fisheries Centre can be enrolled at various departments under the Faculty of Graduate Studies, e.g.

POST HARVEST FISHERIES COURSES
MS204 Tropical Seafood MS313 Seafood Science MS204: Tropical Seafood
Semester: Prerequisite: none Contact Hours per Week: 3 lectures, 1 x 2 Hour Tutorial or a Field Trip Coordinator: Mr. Anthony Chamberlain Text: Tropical Seafood Manual, Chamberlain, A. I
MS204 is principally about the seafood industry in the South Pacific. The industry is seen in the international context of fisheries and the sustainable exploitation of marine resources.
The first part of the course looks briefly at fisheries resources in general and the particular aspects of Pacific marine exploitation. It also includes a review of seafood production and harvest methods, and the importance of seafood regionally and internationally. The value of fish as a food source is examined, as well as its potential dangers as a food product if improperly handled.
This course is applied in the sense that parts 2 and 3 of the course deal with the theoretical knowledge and practical skills required in running a seafood business. Part 2 describes in detail the various post-harvest technologies of handling, preserving and processing seafood. Part 3 explains the various aspects of developing and managing a business. This includes economic, safety and quality considerations.
An important part of the course is a special project for which you must construct a realistic development and management plan for a seafood business. This is covered in Unit 8, Economic Engineering.

When the oil tanker Prestige sunk off the Galician coast, teams of experts were called in to assess the devastation. Among them were specialists who understood how to assess the economic consequences of the damage to local fisheries, as well as those who could help with the massive clean-up operation. Marine resource damage assessment, as it is known, is one of the key skills students develop on the Portsmouth University MSc/PgD in Fisheries Planning and Development. The economic cost of pollution to fisheries is an ongoing area of research in the university's Centre for the Economics and Management of Aquatic Resources (CEMARE). Following the Sea Empress tanker disaster in 1996, three of the centre's MSc graduates were involved in evaluating compensation claims from fishermen in the affected South Wales area. Shabbar Jaffry, director of the postgraduate economics programmes, says applications for fisheries courses have risen by around 30% in recent years. "The department has well established links with research groups across Europe, as well as consultancy companies in the UK."
