Attorneys and security guards appeared at offices and told employees they must leave immediately; their personal belongings would be sorted and sent to them at a later date. The employees were given a choice of resigning, being fired, or in some cases, retiring. The employees who signed resignation forms made themselves ineligible for unemployment benefits. Of course they could later claim they were pressured to resign. A number of those treated in this manner were 23-, 25-, or 28-year employees of the department. Some were on a deferred retirement program and some were due to retire later this academic year. This inhumane and frankly immoral, people-are-as-disposable-as-Kleenex attitude is an example of what we often face here in Florida and across the United States these days. People are the very last consideration. Of course, these employees did not belong to a union, and some were in managerial positions. Well. We saw a good example of how not to treat employees, right here in Florida, just before Christmas. It happened here, but it could have been anywhere where employees have no legal representative, no association, no union.

National Disability Mentoring Day events take place Oct. 16 in Florida "Tomorrow throughout Florida, there will be job shadowing, mentoring and career exploration events for students with disabilities," said Education Secretary Jim Horne. "It is a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the abilities of people with disabilities in the state of Florida." National Disability Mentoring Day began in 1999 as part of a White House effort to increase the profile of National Disability Employment Awareness Month, celebrated each October. The American Association of People with Disabilities, in partnership with the U. S. Department of Labor Office of Disability Employment Policy and the Presidential Task Force on Employment of Adults with Disabilities, encourage National Disability Mentoring Day events during the month. In 2001, Florida was among 32 states that participated and helped to link students with local volunteer employers. This year, local coordinators have planned events statewide and over 75 students with disabilities are expected to participate.

US State Government Aid The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is used to apply for most state loan, grant and scholarship programs, in addition to the federal loans and grants. When you submit the FAFSA to the US Department of Education, they forward the information on the form to the state student assistance agency. Each state has a different FAFSA submission deadline. If you submit your FAFSA by March 1, you will be in time for all state deadlines, other than Michigan. If you miss the deadline, you will be ineligible to receive state aid for the entire academic year. Procedures for applying for state prepaid tuition programs and the national guard differ from state to state. The amount of information provided on the state web sites varies from state to states. Some states provide comprehensive information about residency requirements, loan, grant, scholarship and prepaid tuition programs and other state aid programs. Others provide minimal information. We recommend visiting the sites for both your state of residence and for the states of the colleges to which you are applying. A B C D ...

FACTS.org and ETS Again Give Florida's Students Online Access to Educational and Career Planning Services
Princeton, NJ/Tallahassee, FL - Florida students and adults transitioning between careers will have online access to the latest educational and career planning services anytime, anywhere through an agreement between the State of Florida and the Educational Testing Service (ETS). The State of Florida has continued funding for ETS's Internet version of SIGI PLUS for a second year under a contract with the Florida Center for Advising and Academic Support (FCAAS) and its statewide student advising system - FACTS.org. FACTS.org provides real-time information for students, parents, counselors, and other interested individuals to assist in planning for and managing their postsecondary education in Florida. "This partnership between FACTS.org and SIGI PLUS removes barriers to education and career planning and increases access to information, an important goal of Florida's student-centered K-20 education system," said Florida Secretary of Education Jim Horne. "This collaboration also reduces the cost of products and services for Florida's citizens and educational institutions."

Fight Financial Fraud In Florida Week
More than 22 state agencies have joined together to form the Fight Fraud in Florida Task Force. The group is meeting monthly to find ways to share information and resources to outsmart crafty criminals.
The group has already created an information database to exchange details about criminals who prey on trusting citizens and those in our state that can least afford it. Financial fraud is estimated to cost Floridians about 40 billion dollars a year.
Governor Jeb Bush and the Florida Cabinet are supporting the Fight Fraud in Florida Task Force. They signed a resolution urging citizens to be on their guard against those that commit financial fraud in Florida.
They have also committed state agencies reporting to them to participate in the statewide Fight Fraud initative.
