Ormonde Francis Scism
(Contributed by Joan Scism Stark Lowther.)
Ormonde Francis Scism
was born in Lake George, New York on February 2, 1906, the son and oldest child of Harvey Edgar Scism , a Delaware and Hudson trainman, and Evelyn Vadney Scism , a housewife and factory worker, aged 17. Later, he had two younger sisters, Vera and Evelyn In that decade, the young family built a home at 11 Adams Street, Whitehall, New York which remained the family homestead until Evelyn Scism's death in 1966. Harvey Scism was killed about 1944 when it proved impossible to stop the locomotive engine he was driving before it crashed into several box cars that had become detached from a train ahead. The accident happened near Oneonta, New York. Young Ormonde attended schools in Whitehall, New York, first the Adams Street school, directly across from his home, and then Whitehall High School where he achieved some notice as a football player. A young man 6 feet tall and weighing about 200 pounds, he was sought after for college football and subsequently enrolled on an athletic scholarship at St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York. At St. Lawrence, he was a fraternity member as well as a football player and there is some evidence that social affairs took precedence over scholarly ones. After dropping out of college for a semester, Orm returned to St. Lawrence and graduated with honors, majoring in sciences and spending at least part of his time as a teaching assistant in geology. After or just before graduation, he spent some time working on a ship and thus traveled briefly to France.

Jackie Robinson
Also known as: Jack Roosevelt Robinson, John Roosevelt Robinson
Baseball player, activist Honored internationally as the central figure in baseball's "Noble Experiment," Jack Roosevelt Robinson, known in the world of baseball as Jackie Robinson, took the first steps toward integrating the sport's major league teams when he signed a contract to play with the Brooklyn Dodgers in 1947. This gigantic stride, which prepared the way for the legendary feats of Willie Mays and Henry Aaron, was an early harbinger of the significant changes in contract negotiations, compensation, and general status of professional athletes addressed half a century later in the 1994-95 baseball strike. His individual challenge to the accepted policies of organized sports demonstrated that change was possible through the concentrated effort of a player's union. BIOGRAPHICAL ESSAY Despite the absence of some of the more arduous racial conditions of Georgia, Pasadena had similar restrictionsthe movies were segregated, African Americans could swim in the municipal pool and attend the YMCA only on designated days, and some eating places were closed to black people. From the teachings of his mother, however, Robinson learned important lessons of selfrespect and selfconfidence.

North American Soccer League (NASL) 1967-1984
Maintained by Dave Litterer spectrum@sover.net The North American Soccer League was by far the most successful professional soccer league in United States History, also expanding into Canada. A thorough and comprehensive history of the league, including final tables has been created by David Whitney for Mark Wheeler's Soccer WWW Homepage. This document expands on David's final tables by including the playoff results, as well as the NASL Indoor season results from 1980-1984. The rest of the document is derived largely from Colin Jose's "NASL: A Complete Record of the North American Soccer League". Many thanks to Herb L. Arn (herba@cadvision.com) for providing complete playoff results and game scores, and Kenn Tonasch (kenn@kenn.com) for the 1981-82 indoor standings. Two rival leagues started in 1967, the FIFA-Sponsored United Soccer Association and the renegade National Professional Soccer League. In 1968, they merged to form the North American Soccer League. The league florished for many years attracting many top stars and posting impressive performances and attendance figures, but overspending eventually forced the league into oblivion. Most statistics were compiled from Colin Jose's NASL: A Complete Record Of The North American Soccer League, from newspaper clippings, NASL Media Guides and the US Soccer Hall of Fame archival materials.
