McGill Football Programmes, 1923-1939
McGill programmes are not entirely consistent, either in size or content in the interwar years. The earliest I have encountered are from 1923, which are really little more than glamourised lineup cards printed on slick paper with a few pages of lithographs added. (As McGill Archives' official index only goes back to that year, I don't expect to see much more than lineup sheets prior to that date, although there was likely a programme of some description for the track meet at which Molson Stadium was dedicated). By the end of the 1920s, the programmes had evolved to contain player biographies, short articles and beautiful multicolour artwork covers; however, the Depression forced the return to a scorecard format for five years. From 1935 to 1939, the programmes gradually returned to a quality comparable to those of a decade earlier. McGill generally did not alter its programme covers throughout a season. The illustrated covers thus serve as examples of the whole season, not just one game.

JIM THORPE
The Greatest Athlete in the World
Track, football, baseball - and the Olympic Games. All were conquered by this Indian descendant. Jim Thorpe was born in Indian Territory that is now Oklahoma in 1888 with the name Wa-tho-huck, which means Bright Path. He was part Sac and Fox indian, with some French and Irish also. In 1904 he enrolled at the Carlisle Indian School in Carlisle, Pennsylvania. It was here that his athletic abilities were developed. He became a star on the school's track and football teams. He was named to the All-American Football Team twice, but his greatest achievements came during the 1912 Olympic Games in Stocholm, Sweden. At the Olympics, he won two gold medals, in the most physically demanding events there were - the five-event Pentathlon and the ten-event Decathlon. He not only won these events, but his performance caused King Gustav V of Sweden to say to him, "Sir, you are the greatest athlete in the world."

Tim Curry (Dr Frank N. Furter) Susan Sarandon (Janet Weiss) Barry Bostwick (Brad Majors) As everyone's favorite nerd in Rocky, Bostwick brought a lot of musical talent to the film. He originated the role of Danny Zuko in Grease (1971) on Broadway, earning him his first Tony nomination. Two years after Rocky Horror, Barry Bostwick won a Tony for The Robber Bridegroom. While Barry has always kept busy working in either stage, film or television, most of his films have not been successes. He has worked in such non-hits as Movie! Movie!, Megaforce and Weekend at Bernie's II. He is now appearing on the television hit Spin City with Michael J. Fox. Richard O'Brien (Riff Raff) Patricia Quinn (Magenta) The humble Ms. Quinn claims that she got the part because "Marianne Faithfull was off with her guru." Pat Quinn is mostly known for her British stage work but may be known to audiences worldwide for her work as a nude model in Monty Python's Meaning of Life and her work in I, Claudius. She reappeared as Magenta in a 1994 production of Rocky Horror in Europe.

Wes Lukowsky
Booklist
"Harold 'Red' Grange was arguably the most significant football player of all time. He rose to prominence in the post-World War I era by having his best games for the University of Illinois in the national spotlight against top-ranked opponents. After leaving Illinois as a national icon, he provided credibility to the fledgling pro-football ranks by playing for the Chicago bears....Carroll examines Grange's career in the light of its effect on football in particular and society in general. Grange...was one of the very first sports 'celebrities.' Like today's superstars, he was lured by movie contracts, he was the subject of tabloid rumors, and he attracted annoying law suits simply because he was famous. [He] was also one of the first ex-athletes to turn to broadcasting. This is a carefully researched, well-written study of a man who forged new ground in football and in the art of being a celebrity. Expect interest as millennium lists of great athletes conitnue to showcase Grange. The publisher, The University of Illinois Press , August 25, 1999
