Ottawa, Ontario Canada, KlS 5B6 Geography at Carleton The many different careers that Carleton Geography graduates are pursuing lead us to recognize our responsibility to provide an educational experience which provides both breadth and depth. The many and varied opportunities - some quite unexpected to us - that our graduates have found to use their talents also demonstrate that it is not possible to identify any single career path that would constitute the normal experience for geography graduates. Our Bachelors, Masters and Doctoral programs are designed in response to this reality. The Bachelors programs provide sound FOUNDATIONS in various aspects of geography. The B.Sc. (Physical Geography) provides this foundation in the area of the earth surface environments, with study of climate, climatic change, earth materials, geomorphological processes, biogeography and biophysical resources. The Geographic Information Processing B.A. and B.Sc. provide sound foundations in the development and applications of remote sensing and geomatics. The B.A. programs provide the opportunities to pursue interrelated human geography topics and to choose integrated programs of study that address physical geography and the human-natural environment interface.

Published by the Joint Agricultural Weather Facility (USDA/NOAA)
The Geography, Climate, and Soils of the Former Soviet Union
Introduction
Climate and weather are significant factors affecting agricultural production around the world. Both seasonal and regional variability in weather directly influence crop yield potential. In order to improve the global monitoring of agricultural weather, the Joint Agricultural Weather Facility (JAWF), was established within the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), in 1978. JAWF is a cooperative effort between the National Weather Service's Climate Analysis Center (NWS/CAC), USDA's World Agricultural Outlook Board (USDA/WAOB), and National Agricultural Statistics Service (USDA/NASS). The facility's primary function is to coordinate a world agricultural weather watch and assess the impact of weather variability on crop and livestock production prospects (Motha, 1986). One of the primary responsibilities of JAWF is to monitor weather and crop conditions within the former Soviet Union.
With the breakup of the Soviet Union in late 1991, the agricultural system changed from one where most decisions on agricultural programs were centrally planned, originating from Moscow, to one where individual republics and even regional authorities began making these decisions. In the past, the former Soviet government dictated where certain crops were to be grown and set levels on agricultural production. These decisions were based on perceived economic needs and climate considerations. Agriculture was geared to satisfying planners' as opposed to consumers' desires. As a result, crop varieties and production levels between republics often differed considerably.

Maps break down our inhibitions, stimulate our glands, stir our imagination, loose our tongues. The map speaks across the barrier of language; it is sometimes claimed as the language of geography. CARL O. SAUER
"The Education of a Geographer," 1956 Let us look at the map, for maps, like faces, are the signature of history. WILL DURANT T he division's general collections, which number over 3.5 million map sheets, include both single-sheet maps and multi-sheet map series. Single-sheet maps, which provide worldwide coverage at small and medium scales, are primarily general purpose and thematic maps of continents, countries, states, counties, and cities. Multi-sheet map series, which are usually prepared at large and medium scales, also provide worldwide coverage, normally at the country and state level. single-sheet maps This detail of the 1853 map of Wyoming County in the western part of New York State is typical of the large, wall-sized county maps that gained wide circulation in the northeastern United States before the Civil War. Published in Philadelphia by Newel S. Brown, this map provides coverage of the entire county showing township boundaries, roads, towns and villages, and names of land owners, as well as enlarged insets of the individual towns and villages and views of the more prominent landmarks and structures in the county. The richly decorated borders emphasize the rural and agricultural character of the county as well as the Native American origins of the county name.
