PAST LIVES: CHRONICLES OF CANADIAN PALEONTOLOGY
Chapter 30. Peigan, buffalo and fossils The first peoples of North America were certainly aware of the curious stony object that we call fossils. The evidence is sparse, but the conclusion inescapable native peoples were the first fossil collectors in western Canada A Pagan buffalo-skin medicine pouch with iniskim of Upper Cretaceous ammonite fragments and bivalves. Royal Ontario Museum Collections. Photo from Rudkin, Royal Ontario Museum (c). The Peigan lived a nomadic existence shadowing the great buffalo herds on the plains between the Rocky Mountains and the valley of the South Saskatchewan in what is now southern Alberta. Upper Cretaceous fossil-bearing strata is exposed throughout this territory and the Peigan were aware of fossils and attached spiritual significance to certain fossils for the buffalo hunt. In 1965 Loris Russell, paleontologist at the Royal Ontario Museum, purchased a buffalo hide medicine pouch with nine buffalo stones that originally had been the property of Charlie Crow Eagle of the Peigan. I Want To Be A Paleontologist !
Advice for Students and Parents
Paleontological Research Institution
Ithaca, NY There is no luckier person than the person who can make their passion their career. Most professional paleontologists are just such lucky people. They are people consumed with a passion to understand the history of life on earth. Paleontology is fun, thrilling, and fascinating, but it is also hard work. It is not "easier" than the more traditional "core" science disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, or geology. In many ways, paleontology is more difficult than any other science because to be a good paleontologist you must know a great deal about all of these fields. Paleontology is among the broadest of sciences.
What is paleontology?
What background do I need in high school?
The best starting point is a college preparatory program with as many science and math courses as possible. Outside reading in paleontology and visiting museums with fossil displays is helpful for building up knowledge of fossils themselves. No matter how interested or knowledgeable a student is in paleontology, however, good overall grades in high school are almost always required for admission to a good college or university, which is a necessary prerequisite for a career in paleontology.

One neversees their "hidden side" because these fossils or minerals are always photographed from one side only. This is frustrating. Lovers of fossils and/or minerals enjoy holding them, turning them over and admiring them from all sides: Oh yes we are all the same!!! This is impossible to do on the net. But if you use "3d" viewing it becomes easy. Here are some examples of "3d" photos , fossils and other produce from nature. We have made a concerted effort to search the Web for relevant material, but no matter how hard we try there will always be more information available than we can possibly examine. However, the following list contains links to many of the most interesting and informative Web sites related to topics explored in the chapter that we were able to locate. Check them out, but make sure you come back to do more investigating when you're done.
Burgess Shale Fossils (University of Calgary, Canada)
The Burgess Shale is an exceptional Middle Cambrian age (about 540 million years ago) fossil locality located in Yoho National Park in the Rocky Mountains, near Field, British Columbia, Canada. The locality is special because of the soft-bodied preservation of a wide variety of fossil invertebrate animals. The locality has been intensely studied since its discovery in 1909 by Charles Walcott, and has been declared a World Heritage Site. Links to several other interesting and related sites are included.

    Overview:
Fossils are the remains or evidence of ancient plants and animals that have been preserved in the crust of the earth. Paleontology is the study of animal and plant remains. The fossil record generally goes from simple life forms to complex forms of life. By doing this activity, students will learn how paleontologists use fossils to learn about ancient life. Objectives:
    1. Students will become familiar with the paleontology and fossil portions Digital Atlas of Idaho.
    2. Students will be able to predict the diet and habitat of an animal based on the structural design of the animal.
    3. Students will learn to solve problems. Materials:
Cardboard boxes or jars with a small hole in the top (so students can reach in). Paper, plastic, or wooden models of animals cut up into little pieces. Pictures of animals can even be cut out of a magazine. *Model should be detailed enough so students can observe the teeth, fins, claws, etc.
