Complex Geometry, Patterns, and Scaling in Nature and Society The investigation of phenomena involving complex geometry, patterns and scaling has gone through a spectacular development in the past decades. For this relatively short time, geometrical and/or temporal scaling have been shown to represent the common aspects of many processes occurring in an unusually diverse range of fields including physics, mathematics, biology, chemistry, economics, technology and human behavior. As a rule, the complex nature of a phenomenon is manifested in the underlying intricate geometry which in most of the cases can be described in terms of objects with non-integer (fractal) dimension. In other cases, the distribution of events in time or various other quantities show specific scaling behavior, thus providing a better understanding of the relevant factors determining the given processes. • Probably the best place to start looking for information on a subject is a technical dictionary or encyclopaedia, which will contain a short article on the topic of interest. A good encyclopaedia will also give a bibliography, so that you may read further about your topic. In the Mathematical Sciences Library, as in most libraries, printed encyclopaedias and dictionaries are kept in the Reference Section (Location code REF), which is located in the first set of shelves, just opposite the computer terminals. Unfortunately, the library does not have an encyclopaedia specific to this subject, although we do have a dictionary (see below). However, see

The possibilities of investigating the self-similar staircase fractals in a discrete coordinate system are clearly very promising. Surprisingly, such fractals are found to have holographic properties. Some geometric shapes e.g. a circle or a quadrate, are produced by a well-defined boundary through generating the staircase fractals in 2D discrete space. The obtained "luminous boundaries" are remembered outer boundaries of any geometric form, regardless of the size. Actually, this process is similar to the photographing of an exterior form. Thus there is destruction of a natural phase-periodical structure of the fractal. The staircase fractals are subject to the same rules that apply in information theory. It is shown that the difference in sharpness of holographic shapes is a direct consequence of spectra informations of the forms.
The Hausdorff-Besicovitch dimension for this fractal has been estimated to be 0.5. On this view, the structure of staircase fractals is that of a Cantor Set. As indicated in the picture, such fractal resembles a "goose-wing." Also, the self-similar staircase fractal has much in common with a set of straight lines in a discrete coordinate system.

Introduction Ever since I saw my first picture of the Mandelbrot set (The background image to this page is that of the Mandelbrot Set) I've been fascinated by fractals. One of my prized possessions is a copy of Peitgen and Richter's 'The Beauty of Fractals', signed by Benoit B. Mandelbrot himself after I attended a lecture of his in London a few years ago. Naturally, also being interested in computers I felt the need to combine the two. In fact fractal images have really only been quite so popular and accessible *because* of the advent of computers. My first attempts to draw and zoom into the Mandelbrot set were some 15 years ago now. These few pages detail some of my work with fractals, and of course there are some pictures along the way. Firstly, in case you haven't come across the subject before, you may be wondering - "what are fractals?". The short answer - A fractal shape is a shape, rough or geometric, which when subdivided into parts is found to have it's own shape within itself, independently of scale. For example the branches of a tree, as you move away from the trunk of a tree, towards the extremities if each twig, you move through boughs and branches and twigs, and yet all are similar in shape and structure, differing only in size.
