Even animal behavior and human physiological responses can also be represented as fractal. Here, we show the evidence that it is possible to apply the concept of fractals even to the facial expression recognition, which is one of the most important parts of human recognition. Rating data derived from judging morphed facial images were represented in the two-dimensional psychological space by multidimensional scaling of four different scales. The resultant perimeter of the structure of the emotion circumplex was fluctuated and was judged to have a fractal dimension of 1.18. The smaller the unit of measurement, the longer the length of the perimeter of the circumplex. In this study, we provide interdisciplinarily important evidence of fractality through its application to facial expression recognition. Advertising Enquiries International Journal of Bifurcation and Chaos, Vol. 12, No. 4 (2002) 827-834 doi:10.1142/S0218127402004772 FRACTALS IN AN ELECTRONIC CIRCUIT BY SWITCHING INPUTS JUN NISHIKAWA and KAZUTOSHI GOHARA Department of Applied Physics, Hokkaido University, Sapporo 060-8628, Japan We have proposed a process of generating fractals not from the results of chaotic dynamics, but from the switching of ordinary differential equations. This paper experimentally and numerically analyzes the dynamics of an electronic circuit driven by stochastically switching inputs. The following two results are obtained. First, the dynamics is characterized by a set G C ) of trajectories in the cylindrical phase space, where C G C ) and C are attractive and unique invariant fractal sets that satisfy specific equations. The second result is that the correlation dimension of C is in inverse proportion to the interval of the switching inputs. These two findings move beyond the conventional theory based on contraction maps. It should be noted that the set C is constructed by noncontraction maps.
