INTRODUCTION TO THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS In most people's minds the Galapagos Islands conjure up images of giant tortoises, small brown finches, and the visit of young Charles Darwin on HMS Beagle . The islands have become famous as a 'natural laboratory of evolution' in which scientists can study questions relating to the formation of new species. Geography The islands lie in the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 km from the South American coast and straddling the Equator. There are 13 large islands, 6 smaller ones and 107 islets and rocks, with a total land area of about 8,000 square kilometres. The islands are volcanic in origin and several volcanoes in the west of the archipelago are still very active. Galapagos is a province of the Republic of Ecuador and five of the islands are inhabited, with a total population of around 18,000 people. The capital is Puerto Baquerizo Moreno on San Cristobal Island, although the largest town is Puerto Ayora on Santa Cruz. ..Top Status and management In 1959, Ecuador designated 97% of the land area of Galapagos as a National Park, and then in 1986 the Galapagos Marine Resources Reserve was established, protecting the waters around the archipelago. The Galapagos Marine Reserve was created in 1998, by the Special Law for the Conservation and Sustainable Use of the Galapagos Province. The islands have been recognised internationally as a Man and Biosphere Reserve, and as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. In December 2001, the Marine Reserve was also designated a World Heritage Site.

    History and Exploration
The Galápagos was officially annexed by Ecuador in 1832. Over the years, some interesting personalities have inhabited the islands. The first man to live there for two years in the early 1800s was a "wild" Irish man, Patrick Watkins, who survived by growing vegetables and trading them for rum with the whalers. In 1832 a prosperous colony of convicts, political prisoners, and other unwanted people was established on Floreana. Floreana later became a fashionable island and many luxurious yachts called to pay a visit to the "Robinson Crusoes" of the island. Today, more than 20,000 people (mostly Ecuadorian Indians) live on the islands – the majority on Santa Cruz and San Cristobal.

    Best Time to Visit
"It's hard for me to choose my favorite time in the islands because every season in Galápagos is great! Virtually straddling the equator, there is very little seasonal climate variation in the Galápagos. Whenever you visit, you'll be amazed by the wildlife displaying at your feet and at the snorkeling experiences with sea lions, sea turtles, marine iguanas and tropical fish. What's underwater is as interesting as what's above! "In the winter (November through March) Galápagos is a perfect getaway to a warm climate (daytime temperatures average from 80-95 degrees). The water is also the warmest during this time of year - averaging between 70 and 75 degrees - so it is a great time for swimming and snorkeling. When the water is the warmest it is also the calmest, which is good for people who like to snorkel and people who are concerned about seasickness. There are lots of sunny days - and great sunsets. You can see the green flash! This is also the rainiest time of the year, but it is important to remember that these are desert islands and rainfall during this time averages only 1-2 inches per month. Rain showers also bring lots of vegetation and flowers. At this time of the year, a large number of tortoises and green sea turtles abound in the islands, but you may miss the waved albatross, which goes out to sea between November and April.

    Ecuador's Geography
Ecuador is a very geographically varied country. It is about the same area of the US state of Nevada, or New Zealand, and a bit larger than the United Kingdom. It straddles the equator (for which it was named) on the West, Pacific Ocean, coast of South America. It borders two countries: Peru to the south and east, and Colombia to the north.
There are three geographical regions: the coastal lowlands, mountain highlands and eastern jungle lowlands. The coastal lowlands used to be heavily forested, but much of that is gone now, due to agriculture and shrimp farms.
The backbone of Ecuador is the Andean highlands down the center of the country. The highest peak is Chimborazo (6310 metres; 20,700 ft.), but the most famous is the Cotopaxi volcano, just south of Quito. Quito is the world's second highest capital behind La Paz, Bolivia, at an altitude of 2850 metres (9350 ft.). The highlands contain many different towns and markets to visit.
The jungle, or Oriente as it is called by Ecuadorians, forms the upper basin of the Amazon jungle. There are many virgin rainforest areas, and the large Amazon River tributary, Rio Napo, cuts through the jungle. Oil exploitation and increased population are threats to this once unsettled area.
