Volume 14 Galapagos Islands/Ecuador Trivia
Perhaps the most famous visitor to Ecuador's Galapagos Islands was Charles Darwin. Aboard the HMS Beagle on a five-year voyage, Charles Darwin, at age 26, visited the Galapagos archipelago in 1835 and spent a total of five weeks there studying its natural surroundings. It was not until 1859 that his monumental work, "Origin of Species," was published. In 1854, Herman Melville wrote on his impressions about the Galapagos Islands: "Take 5 and 20 heaps of cinders dumped here and there in an outside city lot: imagine them magnified into mountains and the vacant lot the sea and you will have a fit idea of the general aspect of the Encantadas." Known as the Sistine Chapel of South America, the Cathedral La Compania of Quito, Ecuador was built by Jesuits. Construction of this magnificent cathedral began in 1605 and was completed in 1768. The front chancel is gilded with over seven tons of gold. Galapagos Islands/Ecuador Book Selections

Ecuador and the Galapagos Islands lie astride the Equator .The native Indians of the Ecuadorian Andes have always found it quite natural that in their world days and nights are constant and of equal length. Twelve hours of light, twelve hours of darkness, three hundred and sixty-five days of the year. Ever since their discovery, the Galapagos Islands have been known for their giant tortoises, Geochelone elephantopus. In fact, the name Galapagos itself originates from the Spanish word, "galapago," meaning tortoise. The endemic marine iguanas. Amblyrhynchus cristatus, of the Galapagos Islands are the only iguanas in the world that feed underwater, Most of the time these tranquil but fearsome appearing creatures lie sunning themselves on lava rocks beside the sea. Once a day they will venture beneath the cold waters to forage for marine algae. Galapagos Islands/Ecuador Book Selections

HISTORIC SUMMARIZATION OF THE COLUMBUS ARCHIPIELAGO Here you will find interesting information about the history of these wonderful Ecuadorian islands. The Columbus Archipelago was discovered accidentally by the , during year . He gave them the name of " the Galapagos Islands ", due to the similarity that he found between the terrestrial turtles which lived in some of the islands, and the Galapagos or women saddle. There were many of such turtles in those islands. Today, they are officially called "the Columbus Archipelago". After knowing the existence of the islands, they were visited and used. Pirates were the first on visiting the islands for over 200 years, since this archipelago was the best hiding place; an excellent place to heal their injures after the combats, careen their ships and re-provide of water, meet and oil for their new robberies. Eventually, the hunting and fishing lead to whale and tuna floats captains to this far away -but rich in species- world. Every time, the fame of the islands grew more and many groups of oil-searching men, furrier were getting there, as plant and zoo animals collectionists, and people interested in research. During presidency in , and with all the geographical and historic rights, the Ecuadorian State, takes possession of the Galapagos Archipelago, and colonizes the islands by territorial protection and economic reasons.

Mrs. Thompson, Mrs. McCourt, Ms. Whitney, Mr. Sanderson return to Galapagos Links Statement of project This interactive online project lets students participate in retracing Charles Darwin's explorations and discoveries of the Galapagos Islands. 6th graders will help direct the actual journey of a group of scientists and educators to answer questions, and participate in discussions about the geography, climate, plants, animals and effects of civilization on this fragile ecosystem.
Project Goals
  • to observe and participate in an online research project to discover the geography and culture of the Galapagos Islands to join with other schools in research
Procedures
Each day students will monitor the progress of a group of scientists exploring the Galapagos. Through a series of interactive activities, students will be able to communicate with the scientists in the field. In the four weeks they will examine Unity and Diversity, Stability and Change, Conservation and Destruction, and Solutions and Resolutions.
Expectations and Assessment
All students will be actively involved in research into the geography, culture, animals, plants, and environmental concerns of the Galapagos Islands. Students will be expected to use class time wisely, help plan the direction of the voyage, and contribute to their group's understanding of the topic.
