petroleum actually derives from living plants and animals. Let me tell you more about how this happened. You had all this organic material buried under the sand and mud. As the pressure increased, the petroleum was driven into nearby rocks. Now a rock may look solid but actually it has many pores in. Some rocks have more pores and bigger pores than others. There are three basic kinds of rock: igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary. Petroleum is usually found around sedimentary rocks . [These were formed by the same laying down of sand and silt and mud that was helping to make petroleum.] However, not all sedimentary rocks contain petroleum. In fact, the odds of me becoming a drop of heavy oil were pretty slim. Only about 2 % of organic material ever becomes petroleum and only about 0.5% accumulates in sufficient quantities to be recoverable. The secret to this happening is that hydrocarbons are lighter than water. As an experiment, put a drop of oil in a pan of water. You will see it migrate O.K. The non-porous rock that traps and holds the rising petroleum comes in various shapes, often

GLG 102 HISTORICAL GEOLOGY Professor: Dr. Ronald Blakey Text: Dott and Prothero, Evolution of the Earth, Fifth Edition Office: GLG 219; 523-2740; E-Mail: RCB@Vishnu.glg.nau.edu. Office hours: (varies by semester), or by appt. Course Philosophy and Requirements: This course challenges you to apply the principles and knowledge of Physical Geology (Physical Geology is required pre-requsite) to the long and varied history of our planet. The evidence of past geologic events can be observed in rock structures, textures, composition, and fossils of the crust. As geologists, we search the Earth's surface, drill into it, analyze its chemistry and physical properties, and do whatever else we can to gather together pieces of this cryptic puzzle of events. In this class, you will learn not only about earth history, but how we go about piecing together the puzzle of the earth and its history. The Department of Geology feels strongly that this course should stress geologic concepts and reasoning processes, rather than rote memorization. You will need to memorize many things: the geologic time scale, major groups of plants and animals, and the ages of many extremely important events in earth history. Our goal, however, is to teach you to ask questions about the earth's history, and to gather the tools with which those questions can be answered. At the beginning of each lecture I will present the objectives for the day, often as questions that we are trying to solve, and you will find that your answers to those questions will be a very effective way to study for exams. For best results, read the assigned chapter before coming to class, and again before the exam. Attendance is mandatory.

Historical Geology
Geology 102, Spring 2000, 11:00-12:20 T, Th Dr. Heather Macdonald Welcome to Historical Geology! Historical Geology is the study of the history of the Earth - the changes of sea level that result in flooding of continents or exposure of land, mountain building and erosion, continents moving and moving again, the story of life through time, and changes of climates. In this course, you will learn about how geologists "read" the evidence in the rock record and make interpretations about the cause of events and the history of the Earth. The objectives of this course are that you develop/continue to develop your ability to
  • make valid interpretations about geologic conditions given specific characteristics of rocks, outcrops, geologic maps, and/or geologic cross-sections; give the relative sequence of events and calculate numerical dates when provided with specific geologic data; and describe the general changes in life forms, sedimentary conditions, climate, and tectonic conditions through geologic time (at the level of eras and, within the Phanerozoic Era, periods); and discuss possible causes of the changes.

Historical geology Stratigraphy TERMS Strata - layers of rock - sedimentary, plus lava flows and volcanic ash falls.
Stratigraphic units are defined by an event at the base (the top is the base of the next unit)
Lithostratigraphy - based on rock units. Should be named after places were good example is exposed. Group Formation Member Bed The names of lithostratigraphic units have capital letters, even when they do not have the unit type used in their name: for example Cloughton Formation, Kimmeridge Clay, or Chalk (though clay and chalk do not have capital letters when we just writing about a rock type, they do when we are using them in the name of a stratigraphic unit). Chronostratigarphy - Chronostratigraphy - based on time TIME UNITS CHRONOSTRATIGRAPHIC UNITS Era Erathem Period System Epoch Series Age Stage Time Substage SUBDIVISIONS : Late Upper Middle/Mid Middle Early Lower Note - The Chronostratigraphic Unit refers to the rock deposited during a time unit
Example - Lower Jurassic rocks were deposited during Early Jurassic times.

Findings detailed in Jan. 16 issue of Nature; greenhouse gases implicated A study by University of Massachusetts Amherst geoscientist Robert DeConto posits an alternative theory regarding why Antarctica suddenly became glaciated 34 million years ago. 'THE END OF THE WORLD' HAS ALREADY BEGUN, UW SCIENTISTS SAY In its 4.5 billion years, Earth has evolved from its hot, violent birth to the celebrated watery blue planet that stands out in pictures from space. But in a new book, two noted University of Washington astrobiologists say the planet already has begun the long process of devolving into a burned-out cinder, eventually to be swallowed by the sun. GEOLOGIST’S DISCOVERY MAY UNLOCK SECRETS TO START OF LIFE ON EARTH. SCIENTIST CONTINUES TO BUILD CASE FOR ORIGIN OF PLATE TECTONICS. A Saint Louis University geologist has unearthed further evidence in his mounting case that shifting of the continents and perhaps life on Earth began much earlier than many scientists believe. WV Geology, Historical
Prior to one billion years ago, the geologic history of West Virginia is obscure. Sometime between about 1,100 and 800 million years ago, lava was deposited in the extreme eastern part of the State forming our oldest exposed rock, the Catoctin Greenstone. Later, perhaps about 800 million years ago, a narrow trough began to form in extreme eastern West Virginia. An arm of the sea entered and sediments accumulated. As time went on, this shallow sea transgressed westward. By the end of Cambrian time, about 300 million years later, this shallow sea covered essentially all of West Virginia. Marine deposition took place throughout most of this and the succeeding Ordovician Period. During this total interval of about 370 million years, most of the rocks exposed in Jefferson and eastern Berkeley counties and in scattered areas southwestward along the Virginia boundary were deposited. Rocks of the same age are found in abundance in the deep wells throughout the State. The Taconic Orogeny near the end of Ordovician time formed a high mountainous area east of West Virginia. These highlands formed the main source of sediments for the succeeding Silurian Period and part of the Devonian Period. Both clastics and carbonates were deposited in a mixed marine and nonmarine environment, with clastics predominating in the eastern part of the State. Evaporites were deposited in northern West Virginia in Late Silurian time.
