A timeline with information on major contributors to biology, geology, and paleontology from Aristotle up to the 20th century. From the UC Berkeley Museum of Paleontology.
http://www.ucmp.berkeley.edu/history/evothought.html
THE THEORY of evolution, formalized by Charles Darwin, is as much theory as is the theory of gravity, or the theory of relativity. Unlike theories of physics, biological theories (especially evolution) have been argued long and hard in socio-political arenas. The history of thought about evolution in general and paleontological contributions specifically are often useful to the workers of today. Science, like any iterative process, draws heavily from its history. The list below includes scientists and thinkers who have contributed to our understanding of life on Earth, especially evolution. The list is given chronologically, and is divided into sections according to themes in the history of evolutionary thought. Timeline of Evolutionary Thought: Get a graphical view of some
of the key players in evolutionary thought over the last 300 years.

Welcome to the USF Geology Department!
USF is a major center for environmental geology. Our research encompasses hydrogeology, paleoenvironments, environmental geophysics, geochemistry/petrology, coastal processes, and natural hazard reduction. In the USF Geology Department, faculty and students work locally to solve environmental problems that affect our community, and globally to understand the basic processes driving geologic change.
The Department of Geology offers B.A., B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. degrees in geology. The current graduate enrollment is about 35, and most full-time students are supported by either teaching or research assistantships. Our Hydrogeology Internship Program allows students in hydrogeology to complete their Master's degree while working full- or part-time for local regulatory agencies, or in the environmental consulting industry. Please explore this site and contact us to learn more about the Department, and the specific program of study that is right for you.
