As you may recall, we had just reached the point in our axiomatic development of geometry where things got interesting: non-Euclidean geometry. For the first half of this semester, we'll follow two intertwined threads:
  • the study of geometry using transformations, and the study of the properties of hyperbolic geometries.
During the second half of the semester, we'll explore additional topics not covered in Martin's text. You'll have some say in the direction we go, but a few options are listed below.

COURSE DESCRIPTION This course is a combination of algebra, trigonometry, elementary analysis and analytical geometry. Its purpose is to provide a strong foundation for higher mathematics. We will first review material presented in previous algebra courses and then move on to more complex polynomial and rational functions. Students will learn how to graph these functions both on paper and using graphing calculators, and they will also discover how to write equations from graphs. Next, we will explore exponential and logarithmic functions.     Last Updated November 12, 2002 Ricci is a Mathematica package for doing symbolic tensor computations that arise in differential geometry. It has the following features and capabilities:
    • Manipulation of tensor expressions with and without indices Implicit use of the Einstein summation convention Correct manipulation of dummy indices Display of results in mathematical notation, with upper and lower indices Automatic calculation of covariant derivatives Automatic application of tensor symmetries Riemannian metrics and curvatures Differential forms Any number of vector bundles with user-defined characteristics Names of indices indicate which bundles they refer to Complex bundles and tensors Conjugation indicated by barred indices Connections with and without torsion
    Limitations: Ricci currently does not support computation of explicit values for tensor components in coordinates, or derivatives of tensors depending on parameters (as in geometric evolution equations or calculus of variations), although support for these is planned for a future release. Ricci also has no explicit support for general relativity, or for other mathematical physics or engineering applications, and none is planned. If you are interested in such support, I recommend that you consider the commercial package MathTensor, which is far more extensive than Ricci, and provides all these capabilities and more.     Projective geometry for multiple view analysis
    I proposed a new framework for studying the problems of camera calibration (how to find out the optical and geometrical characteristics of the camera), motion determination (how to find out the relative position and orientation of two cameras), and 3D structure reconstruction (how to find how the location of objects or features in the world) in the most general case of totally uncalibrated views (nothing is known about the cameras who took the images). Depending on the amount of information and the constraints available, the problem can be analyzed at a projective, affine, or Euclidean level. This is the idea of stratification , studied systematically through the Canonical representations . Let me describe some of the individual findings which have been obtained within that powerful general framework. Given a single image, and a point on this image, the only thing which can be infered geometrically is a ray of projection, but not the position along this ray. The relationship between the point and the ray is best described by projective geometry , a generalization of the familiar Euclidean geometry, which can deal with projections and objects at infinity, but lacks the notions of angles or distances.
