Use the following outline to get started. How much does it cost to attend a college, university, or technical college? What do educational costs include? What is the family's share? Who determines how much my family is expected to pay toward educational costs? ... New - Georgia First Education Loans How much does it cost to attend college? [top of page] Educational costs can differ significantly from one school to another, depending on the type of school you select and your program of study. In general, costs will be lowest at a public technical college, higher at a community/junior college, still higher at a public four-year college, and highest at a private college. The total cost of attending college today may range from about $1,500 per year to more than $37,000 per year. Financial aid programs have been developed to help you pay for these costs. Schools with higher costs often have more financial aid available than less expensive schools. Compare the cost and financial aid at different schools. Testimony of Linda C. Schrenko "Reading and Accountability: Improving 21st Century Schools"
Committee on Education and the Workforce
February 20, 2001
In 1996, after a thorough review of Georgia’s student achievement, drop out rates, and other indicators of success, the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Board of Education decided that the single most important subject for students to master to succeed in school is reading. We polled a group of 17-year-old dropouts, and 80 percent of them told us that if they had learned to read by third grade their chances of staying in school would have been greatly increased. Armed with this knowledge, I hired a reading director to work at the Georgia Department of Education who, in consultation with U.S. Department of Education researchers, designed a program we call Reading First Reading First initially sought to equip teachers with strategies for teaching decoding skills while using the basal program to focus on comprehension. After two years of piloting the program in eight schools, we determined that our success levels were high. In fact, one of the pilot school’s average reading scores increased by 20 points. Reading First schools focus on reading instruction for three hours per day in kindergarten through third grade and the three hours are divided to include instruction in every component of reading. Reading comprehension strategies are an important component of

State History
General History of the State
Cherokee and Creek Indians lived in Georgia when Hernando de Soto, the Spanish explorer, first traveled parts of Georgia in 1540. By 1566, forts were built along the Atlantic coast, including the first in Georgia on St. Catherine’s Island. However, no permanent settlements were established. In 1732, English King George II granted a charter for the last of the 13th colony in America. There were originally twenty one trustees named in the 1732 charter "The Trustees for Establishing the Colony of Georgia". Over the period of the trusteeship (1732-1755), fifty more were added. The State Gets Involved
The cry for reform was not first heard in 1930, however. Nine years earlier, Gov. Thomas Hardwick had presented a plan to the General Assembly that called for the restructuring of higher education in Georgia. Specifically, the plan proposed substituting the separate boards of trustees with a seven-member Board of Regents to govern the University of Georgia and its branches. Although a good idea, the plan lacked detail and fell victim to a legislative tug-of-war in the House and Senate chambers. The next year, Atlanta attorney Philip Weltner drafted a bill based on the commission's recommendations. While the measure cleared the state Senate, it failed to pass in the House. It would take nothing less than the governor's race that year to bring higher education to the front lines of public consciousness. Top BOR 70th Anniversary USG Publications Leave a Comment ...
