Authors: Richard Lord Release Date: April, 1996 Availability: Special Order List Price: Our Price: Used Price: More Details from Amazon.com Amazon international Product Reviews: A Great Book for those Planning to Live in Germany I have recently returned from living and working in Germany for one year. I read this book upon my return to the States and found Mr. Lord's perspective unbelievably accurate of the culture that I experienced. Germany is a wonderful place, but as with any country, the culture can be confusing at times. Mr. Lord, an American who is married to a German and has spent 15 years living there, gives a very raw, accurate, and insightful perspective on the German culture. He informs the reader about Germany's history, current customs, traditions, daily life, and how Germany's culture is evolving today. Many reviewers believe that Mr. Lord's perspective is a tad bitter. I believe brutally honest is a better description. He delivers a very accurate perspective for foreigners who plan to be immersed in the German culture for a long period of time. I highly recommend this book to anyone planning to live in Germany.

"A landmark study. . . . Widdig's energetic account uses an interdisciplinary approach to reveal how economic anxieties were powerfully symptomatic of larger social and cultural issues."Maria Tatar, author of Lustmord: Sexual Murder in Weimar Germany "Bernd Widdig displays sharp intelligence and uncommon wit in this brilliant study of culture and inflation. Following the explosions in politics and culture that the inflation detonated from the end of World War I to the rise of the Nazis, this book is a bold and original meditation on modernity and money and the trauma of oblivion. It is a masterful, illuminating analysis."Peter Fritzsche, author of Reading Berlin 1900 "Widdig's account of the cultural impact of the German hyperinflation adds an important dimension to the history of interwar Germany. He brings a unique perspective to the interaction between popular culture and political and economic decisions in the twentieth century. This fascinating book raises intriguing questions for economic and political historians."Peter Temin, author of

The Program
Since November 9, 1989, when the Berlin Wall was opened, Germany has undergone profound changes. The dissolution of the Eastern Bloc and the subsequent unification of Germany have had far-reaching implications in many areas, ranging from the way Germans perceive themselves and their nation to Germany's role as a member of the European Community and to its international image. To explore the changing cultural landscape of the unified Germany, the NEH Summer Institutes focused on four critical debates currently in the forefront of German public discussion:
  • Present and Past
  • East and West
  • Women and Men
  • Germans and "Foreigners"
Drawing on the rich academic and cultural resources of the Five College Area of western Massachusetts, each Institute provided twenty-five high school teachers the opportunity to work with scholars active in these debates and to study and discuss relevant materials produced in Germany: selected literary texts, film and video, news media, and the internet.
Activities
Conducted entirely in German, the Institute allowed participants to immerse themselves in the German language for four weeks by speaking, hearing, reading, and writing German for over eight hours a day, five days a week. In addition to discussing and writing about their own responses to the lectures and readings, participants will devote part of each week to projects adapting current and authentic materials for classroom use, including the use of new technologies such as the internet. UMass graduate credit and Massachusetts Professional Development Points (PDP's) can be awarded. Previous participants can be contacted to share materials and information with colleagues in their areas.

Will the Germans ever tire of reality TV?
Back in 2000 Germany went mad over “Big Brother.” Next came “Popstars,” which spawned the bands No Angels and Bro’Sis, continuing presences at the top of the German charts. Now the excitement surrounding the final stages of the German version of “Pop Idol” “Deutschland sucht den Superstar” (Germany searches for its superstar) has reached fever pitch. Reality TV in Germany has never been so big. So big, in fact, that even the public service broadcaster ARD wants a piece of the action.

Popular Culture (Germany)
Popular Culture (Germany) Serious study of popular culture is usually concerned more with long-term trends than with sudden convulsions. But the impact of the short-lived upheavals of 1848-49 deserves attention because this brief period of unprecedented legal and political permissiveness revealed some of the tensions in mid-century German society that were normally concealed under a blanket of official repression. One striking feature of the revolutionary years was the obvious upsurge for spontaneous association. Large open gatherings ( Volksversammlungen Vereine ) that had been developing since the late 18th century. There were reading, choral, gymnastic and marksmen's clubs, associations for promoting education or business or social welfare every sort of social activity was conducted through a club of some sort, the number of which had increased rapidly in the 1830s and 1840s. Only political clubs were lacking, because they were forbidden under the old regime. But when political activity was legalized in 1848 nearly every locality quickly acquired both a democratic and a liberal club, at least. For a nation immersed in club activities it was the most natural form for a political action to take. The new political clubs acted in a variety of ways. They tried to influence public opinion, and they joined in the almost universal drive for collecting signatures on petitions. (Nearly every organization in Germany seems to have initiated a petition of some sort: The Frankfurt parliament alone got 17,000 of them, many with hundreds or even thousands of signatures.) The political clubs also supported candidates for election, and they formed the core constituency organizations of the slowly emerging national political parties.

Correct conduct with colleagues and customers, how to master difficult situations, the correct tone to use in letters and e-mails, table manners - these are a few important things that you can find tips on in this article.
