Weimar Germany understood well the horrors of Communism, as the Russian people came under the totalitarian boot of the Soviet system. The streets of Berlin and other big cities were running almost red with the propaganda of Communists and their gangs, riots and demos. The Nazis rose to power in showing opposition to this frightening social and economic system, even if they had to borrow from the Communists' methods to gain control.
Post-war Germany faced again the potential spread of Communism - indeed, 20 million of its citizens fell to the vicious Soviets and lost their freedoms. People fled for their lives - spiritual and material - before the Berlin Wall was built, to keep them imprisoned.

As a consequence, the original aim of the Potsdam Conference (17 July to 2 August 1945), namely the creation of a new postwar order in Europe, receded into the background. The four powers were only able to agree on the matters of denazification, demilitarization, economic decentralization and the re-education of the Germans along democratic lines, although the actual substance to the concept remained contentious. The Western powers also gave their fateful consent to the expulsion of Germans from the eastern German territories that had been placed under Polish administration as well as from northeastern Prussia, Hungary and Czechoslovakia. In view of the intensifying conversion of the Soviet zone of occupation into a communist dictatorship, the British and Americans began to work harder to promote the development and merger of their own zones. The Western powers were intent on alleviating misery and need in the Western zones and on paving the way for the creation of a democratic state structure based on freedom. Germany Info Home: Information Services: Facts about Germany History German history up to 1945 / Part II Age of the French Revolution. The nudge which brought the crumbling Reich crashing down came from the west. Revolution broke out in France in 1789. Under pressure from the middle classes, the feudal social order which had existed since the early Middle Ages was swept away; a separation of powers and human rights were to assure the liberty and equality of all. The attempt by Prussia and Austria to intervene by force in events in the neighboring country failed ignominiously and triggered a counter-thrust by the revolutionary armies. Under the stormy advances of the forces of Napoleon, who had assumed the revolutionary heritage in France, the Reich finally collapsed. France took the left bank of the Rhine. To compensate the former owners of these areas for their losses, an enormous territorial reshuffling took place at the expense of the smaller and particularly the ecclesiastical principalities. Through the Final Recess (Reichsdeputationshauptschluss) of 1803, some four million subjects changed rulers. The medium-sized states were the beneficiaries. In 1806 most of them grouped together under French protection in the Confederation of the Rhine (Rheinbund). In the same year Emperor Franz II laid down the crown and the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation ceased to exist.

History
Few national histories are as sensitively wired and rife with conflict as Germany's. Documented German history has been a rollercoaster of loose unifications and fractures ever since 90 BC, when Roman author Posidonium first called Central European clans "Germans" (Germaniae). However, assigning an absolute birthdate is difficult, as Germany was not a truly unified nation until 1871. German history has been tiptoed on, trodden on, and torn by diverse historiographical theories. One of the oldest is the questionably teleological Sonderweg theory, which suggests that German history has been on a distinct path from the rest of Western history since its origin, thus explaining the enlightened absolutism of the eighteenth century and the rampant National Socialism of the first half of the twentieth century. Opponents of this theory argue that German history is not exceptionally like or unlike the history of anywhere else. Write a comment for History Early German History: 58 Bc-Ad 1517 Germany's early history is more accurately the early history of Europe. The continent was a fluid drawing board on which various tribes traded power, uniting under one set of borders and fractioning to form others. The rise of Prussian power in the 19th century, supported by growing German nationalism, eventually ended inter-state fighting and resulted in the formation of the German empire in 1871 under the chancellorship of Otto von Bismarck. Although authoritarian in many respects, the empire eventually permitted the development of political parties, and Bismarck was credited with passing the most advanced social welfare legislation of the age. Dynamic expansion of military power, however, contributed to tensions on the continent. The fragile European balance of power broke down in 1914, and World War I and its aftermath, including the Treaty of Versailles, led to the collapse of the German empire. The Weimar Republic The postwar Weimar Republic (1919-33) was an attempt to establish a peaceful, liberal democratic regime in Germany. This government was severely handicapped and eventually doomed by economic problems and the inherent weakness of the Weimar state. The inflation of the early 1920s, the world depression of the 1930s, and the social unrest stemming from the draconian conditions of the Versailles Treaty worked to destroy the Weimar Government from inside and out.

LaRouches in Berlin:
Learn the Lessons of
Germany's History
by Ortrun Cramer In the last weeks of 2002, American economist and pre-candidate for the 2004 U.S. Presidential elections Lyndon H. LaRouche conducted a tour of European centers, addressing seminars and press conferences, and holding private meetings with influentials from politics and the economic sector. After visits to Milan, Paris, and Budapest, he spoke on Dec. 18 at a seminar sponsored by EIR Mr. LaRouche's keynote address , published below, emphasized the importance of defining a policy orientation for the United States and the world, in the first weeks of the new year. He announced that he would give a State of the Union address on Jan. 28, and that until that speech, and President Bush's own State of the Union address, have been made, "it will be extremely difficult to estimate what U.S. policy is going to be, and consequently, very difficult to estimate what the world situation will be." In the audience were diplomatic representatives of Arab, African, and Central European countries; journalists from German, East European, and Arabic media; representatives of various political, cultural, and economic associations. There were also many supporters and friends of the LaRouche movement. What was particularly refreshing, was the presence of a group of students from several Berlin universities, joined by youth from Denmark and France, who were visiting Berlin at the time. These young people contributed to a very lively debate after the presentations.

History and Government
History: de facto hereditary tenure over each of their respective fiefdoms. The tenth century witnessed a growth in the power of central authority under the leadership of the House of Saxony, while in the 11th and early-12th centuries, under the Salian dynasty, the power of the crown was in many ways at its height. In 1152, following a disputed succession and a civil war, the dynamic Frederick Barbarossa acceded to the throne: he is one of the most significant figures in German history. Frederick, his son Henry VI and his grandson Frederick II, made prodigious attempts to revive the reality of royal power in Germany and Italy, but the task proved impossible and by the late 13th century the country was seething with civil war.
Government: The present constitution dates from May 1949, the Federal Republic of Germany being formally established four months later. The country is a parliamentary democracy with a bicameral legislature (

80. Maulbronn Monastery - World Heritage In Baden-Wurttemberg
The most complete and bestpreserved medieval monastery north of the Alps and hence a World Heritage Site. Brief history, 19th-century plan and photographs from Wolfgang M. Werner.
http://www.bawue.de/~wmwerner/english/maulbron.html

U NESCO has inscribed 582 places in the world to the World Heritage List
Maulbronn Monastery - 850 years old
World Cultural Heritage since 1993
"Founded in 1147, the Cistercian Maulbronn Monastery is considered the most complete and best-preserved medieval monastery complex north of the Alps. Surrounded by fortified walls, the main buildings were constructed between the 12th and 14th centuries. The monastery's church, built in the transitional Romanesque-Gothic style, had significant influence on the spread of Gothic architecture over much of northern and central Europe.
The water management system at Maulbronn, with its elaborate network of drains, irrigation canals and reservoirs, is exceptional." - (from UNESCO's World Heritage List) the monastery from the air (53Kb JPG) Photo by Otto Braasch T his former Cistercian abbey which is almost 850 years old, is considered to be the best preserved and thus most impressive mediaeval abbey north of the Alps . Twelve monks from Alsace began building the abbey in 1147 in the seclusion of the Salzach valley and set up the monastic establishment in accordance with the building rules and features of the Cistercian establishments already in existence in Burgundy. For 390 years the monks at Maulbronn lived, built, prayed and worked, thus characterizing the entire cultural landscape in the manner typical of the Cistercian order.
