Norfolk / Hampton
Historical Context
Historical Context
Norfolk/Hampton's dramatic history began in 1607 when Captain John Smith of the Virginia Company led three ships, Susan Constant, Godspeed and Discovery starting point of America's Holocaust towards people of African descent.
In 1680 the King of England decreed that the Towne of Lower Norfolk County be established. The economic activity of enslaved human cargo and the cash crops they produced became so valuable, that more ships from Europe and the West Indies had to dock in the Elizabeth River’s deep-water harbor at Norfolk. By 1750 British colonist records indicate that there were 236,000 slaves, with more than 206,000 living south of Pennsylvania. Virginia had more than any state. Leading colonists, such as Patrick Henry and Thomas Jefferson constructed the hypocritical moral ground of " freedom from taxation without representation ", sparking the Revolutionary War in 1770.
By 1775, Norfolk was still Great Britain’s most prosperous city to tax without representation. During the war more than 100,000 people escaped slavery. Many were incented to come here by Lord Dunmore, the British Governor of Virginia, to fight for Great Britain in return for post-war freedom. General George Washington and other southern plantation owners initially resisted the prospect of arming African Americans because they feared it would spur more slave uprisings. War casualties and Great Britain’s hard fighting "Ethiopian Regiment" caused General George Washington, Thomas Jefferson and others to reverse their earlier position, allowing enslaved blacks to serve for America in return for post-war freedom. Even Virginia colonists who prospered the most from a slavery-driven economy, freed a percentage of Blacks to fight for America.

17. Great Castles & Historic Attractions In South And West Wales
cumstronghold, the finest late medieval fortress-palace in britain. and fascinatingreligious sites, the great Bishop's Palace Cadw Welsh historic Monuments.
http://www.croeso.com/south.html
This large area from the Wales-England border to Pembrokeshire in the far west , is a surprisingly diverse stretch of national parklands, high mountains, wooded valleys, spectacular beaches and towering headlands. Its history is as richly patterned as the landscape. Prehistoric settlers, Roman soldiers, Christian missionaries, medieval warlords and industrial magnates have all made their mark here, leaving a wonderful legacy of places to visit. Pentre Ifan Cromlech in the Preseli Hills is one of Wales's finest ancient burial chambers, made of local 'bluestones' which were somehow transported all the way to Salisbury Plain to form Stonehenge's inner circle. In AD75 the Romans established an important base at Caerleon - today it is the most varied and fascinating Roman site in Britain. But the largest impact on the landscape came in medieval times when the castle builders erected a chain of fortresses from east to west. They began on the border at Chepstow , where they constructed one of Britain's first stone-built castles.
