This lesson plan is a guide for teachers that will result in imaginary WPA interviews similar to those found in the American Life Histories, 1936-1940 of the American Memory Collection of the Library of Congress website that demonstrate students' interpretation of the question "Was the New Deal North Carolina's 'Reconstruction'?" A 1930's view of the Atlantic Beach boardwalk, bath houses, and old casino, where dances, concerts-and sometimes professional boxing matches-were held. from "The Fighter Who Wouldn't," The State , October, 1986, page 21.
A written WPA report on an imaginary North Carolina resident who lived during the Reconstruction and Depression eras is the product of this assignment. Students must complete research of the American Life Histories, 1936-1940 from the American Memory Collection , select an occupation for future research, and explore additional print and electronic sources. The "interview" must be historically accurate, support a thesis that answers the question, and include an appropriate sensory illustration. The Student Project
Objectives
The student project will demonstrate mastery of a variety of objectives that include creative writing, historical appreciation and criticism, recognition of bias, and incorporation of text and illustration reflecting primary source research.

The stock market crash of October 1929 was effectively the beginning of a very new and important era for the United States and for the world. The global economic recession that followed was most strongly felt in the United States. By 1932, US industrial output fell 54% and there was 25-30% unemployment. This was partially the result of lack of confidence in the economic and financial institutions of the country. This lack of consumer confidence led to a downward spiral as fewer factory orders were placed and more and more jobs were lost. The Great Depression was a period of introspection and reevaluation for the United States. Due to the strong economic and political ties to the United States after WWI, the European industrial economies also suffered severe problems. It can be argued strongly that the rise of Adolf Hitler was only possible because of the very bleak economic landscape of Germany in the early 1930's. Hitler used rearmament of Germany as a driving force to restart the German economy and by 1936 the economic depression in Germany was effectively over. The situation was more severe in the United States and a very great contributor to the problem was the great drought that created the "Dust Bowl" that extended over a large region of the Great Plains . This forced many agricultural families from their homes and created an even more depressed outlook for the American people. The devastating effects of the Depression were to last until the US joined WWII in 1941.

B y the 1930s money was scarce because of the depression, so people did what they could to make their lives happy. Movies were hot, parlor games and board games were popular. People gathered around radios to listen to the Yankees. Young people danced to the big bands. Franklin Roosevelt influenced Americans with his Fireside Chats. The golden age of the mystery novel continued as people escaped into books, reading writers like Agatha Christie, Dashiell Hammett, and Raymond Chandler.

T he purpose of this web and library guide is to help the user gain a broad understanding and appreciation for the culture and history of the 1930s. In a very small way, this is a bibliographic essay. While there is no way we can link to everything, we have attempted to find areas of special interest and to select information that we hold dear today - movies we watch, songs we sing, events that move us, people we admire. T o see the whole picture, we encourage users to browse all the way through this page and then visit the suggested links for more information on the decade. We feel the best way to immerse oneself in a topic is to use both Internet and the library. The real depth of information is best read in books. More photographs, more information, more depth. Then, there is information that will be found only on the Internet; a journal from someone, photographs like those on our pages. The Era of Franklin D. Roosevelt, 1933-1945:
A Brief History with Documents

Richard Polenberg As a subject of historical scrutiny, the presidency of Franklin Delano Roosevelt offers a prism into numerous aspects of American history during the 1930s and 1940s. One might focus on FDR’s response to the Great Depression and track the evolution of the New Deal from relief to reform to a growing emphasis on fiscal policy and racial justice. FDR’s role as "Dr. Win-the-War" opens inquiry into the ways the United States abandoned isolationism to fight oppression abroad, while violating the civil liberties of many Americans at home. For a broader thematic approach, students can consider the impact of the Roosevelt presidency on liberalism in America: FDR’s terms in office assured that in the future, Americans would associate liberalism with an activist national state charged with securing "freedom from want." Confronting Southern Poverty in the Great Depression:
The Report on Economic Conditions of the South with Related Documents

Edited with an Introduction by David L. Carlton and Peter A. Coclanis While individual job-seekers and federal bureaucracies struggled to overcome the Great Depression, Franklin Roosevelt announced in 1938 that the American South represented the "Nation’s No. 1 economic problem" and commissioned the National Emergency Council to investigate and report on the challenges facing the region. The resulting Report on Economic Conditions of the South supported Roosevelt’s claim: Though rich in physical and human resources, the southern states lagged behind other parts of the nation in economic development (especially in per capita income) and in such building blocks of economic growth as education, public health, and local investment capital. Based on data compiled by southern social scientists, most notably sociologist Howard W. Odum, the Report stopped short of prescribing remedies for southern problems, largely to avoid the appearance of being an advertisement for the New Deal. Still, as David L. Carlton and Peter A. Coclanis point out, the

Primary Source Media Adds to Its CD-ROM Series
Primary Source Media, a provider of primary source documents via CD-ROM, microform, and online services, has announced the release of The Great Depression and the New Deal, the 10th title in its historical research series American Journey: History in Your Hands. Like previous American Journey titles, The Great Depression and the New Deal features a wealth of rare primary source materials organized around thematic essays. Hyperlinks, timelines, maps, picture albums, content lists, and flexible full-text searches facilitate access to hundreds of documents and images. "Many of the issues raised during this period, such as government's responsibility to its citizens and conservation, continue to be central to our national life," said David Lucas, president of Primary Source Media. "It is our hope that the primary source materials and thematic essays on The Great Depression and the New Deal disc will give students greater ability to understand and debate these issues." Memoranda written by the framers of the New Deal, addresses to Congress and the nation by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, photographs from Dorothea Lange and other Farm Security Administration photographers, and newspaper and magazine articles make the disc a useful tool for studying the 1930s in America. Audio recordings of Roosevelt's fireside chats, personal reports of conditions throughout the country, and recordings from folk artist Woody Guthrie and bluesman Huddie Ledbetter provide insight into the culture of the era. Major topics covered on the disc include conservation, poverty, unemployment, labor and business, and popular culture.
