Haitian Proverbs: An integral part of the Creole Language
O f all the Languages of this world, Haitian Creole stands among those that rely the most on proverbs, metaphors, and great imagery. Surely, without proverbs, Creole would still survive as a language; however, the language owes its musicality and images, its cadence and strength to its proverbs. It must be understood that we are not talking of the Creole being spoken in Port-au-Prince . That Creole has been altered by too many foreign influences and is replete with French and English expressions. We are rather referring to a somewhat purer version of the language, one that is spoken in the still mostly unadulterated rural Haiti, or to some degree by members of the older generations.
- If you’re a Haitian, we hope that you will rediscover them and enjoy once again their beauty.

January 2002 J. Michael Dash's book is one of the best overviews of Haiti today I have ever read, and the next time I teach a course on Haiti this will be a central text. Dash's treatment comes in 8 chapters. First is a chapter called "context" in which he lays out the basic history of Haiti. Next he deals with the people and society, emphasizing the dominant class and color split which has dominated Haiti in all periods save the revolution of 1791-1803 and the U.S. occupation of 1915-1934. In those two periods Haitians pulled together putting aside the dominant class and color issues to enter into unity in which nation and race became the central rallying value allowing them to resist outsiders. In chapters 3 through 8 he tackles such central issues as: religion, social customs, mass media and cinema, literature and language, the performing arts and finally a marvelous chapter on the visual arts and architecture. In the literature and language chapter Dash gives a clear and fascinating overview of the literary history of Haiti, but says only a few words on language. Similarly, in the last chapter he gives one an essential outline of the dominant schools of art from the 1930s on, but shuffles architecture to a few concluding paragraphs. I doubt it deserves more.

Haiti: Culture and History The Republic of Haiti is contained in the western one-third of Hispaniola. It is a country of almost eleven thousand square miles with a population of about seven million people. The population consists about 95% African descent and 5% mulatto and European descent. The majority of people, about 80% are Catholic, 16% Protestant (an estimated 50% of Haitians also practice voodoo). Unfortunately, Haiti has the lowest standard of living in the Western Hemisphere. This is due in large measure to the political instability of the country. This has resulted in a brain drain as well an economic drain from the country. This in turn has led to foreign governments issuing warnings to their citizens, about the potential dangers of traveling in the major cities like Port-au-Prince, Cap Haitien and the northwestern province. The major industries in the country are sugar refining, cement, textiles and tourism.

Hello :) Welcome! My name is Hertz Nazaire, just Naz... is cool. I was born in Port-Au-Prince, Haiti (carrefour). I moved to the U.S. at very young age, but my culture is still a very strong factor in molding me as a person. I love Haiti very much and wanted to find a way to show my pride and share my heritage with others. Although Haiti is one of the poorest countries on this earth, many of us still strive to overcome our struggles and make major impact in this world. Haitians have a strong and colorful history, all you have to do is explore the many links on this site to discover this. Haiti Kreyol.Com was created in November, 1999 as a tool to keep in touch with my roots while providing small services to Haitians new to the net. The Haitian community online has grown larger since then. This site will serve as a hub to connect you to our peoples everywhere. Being an artist I will publish many of my works on this site and use it as a personal online journal of what I'm up to, so please come back often to view the many updates on my art on my progress to become a better painter. New Greeting Cards, Postcards, and Posters of my Art are now online. Thank you for all your support and kind words about my paintings.

    Haiti
    Culture
Haitian rural society is predominately made up of subsistence farmers who rent or own a small plot of land and cultivate beans, sweet potatoes and other crops using labor-intensive technology such as picks and hoes. Most families live in small one- or two-bedroom homes without electricity or running water and rely on charcoal as the principle energy source. The load is lightened a bit by communal work teams called kombits , music, and pastimes like Krik Krak, an oral game of riddles. But make no mistake - Haiti is hard living and the poverty is more harsh than quaint. Perhaps the country's celebrated sense of humor is requisite for survival. There are deep and bitter divisions between blacks (about 95% of the population) and mulattos (about 5%). While blacks have always had an overwhelming majority, mulattos have had advantages within education, government and the military. Most mulattos speak French, the language of higher education and most job opportunities, while the vast majority of Haitians speak Creole. This two-tiered social system is perhaps the greatest barrier to Haiti coming into its own as a stable and successful Caribbean nation. Haiti is the home of much-maligned but beautifully spiritual Vodou (Voodoo). At its heart, Vodou is a pantheistic African religion similar to the Nigerian Yoruba faith, which was brought over by African slaves and later syncretized with Catholicism. After missionaries persuaded the slaves to convert to Christianity (religious leaders being tortured to death and that sort of thing), certain Catholic saints with attributes similar to those of African deities came to symbolize the spiritual paths that had been venerated for generations.
