Adoptables Linked Rescues Outdoor Rabbits ... Hamsters as a New Pet Of the many species of hamster that live in the wild, relativity few have found there way into the pet world. One of the most common of these is the Golden or Syrian hamster; this is still a comparatively new pet which has only been available since its re-discovery in 1930. Once again this rodents first human encounter was in the laboratory.
Harry Hamster 1kg A complete food for hamsters. Syrian hamsters are solitary animals with both sexes living apart in the wild and only coming together for mating purposes, in captivity these hamsters must be housed separately, as fights to the death are not uncommon. All hamsters will need to be housed in a strong cage that fits tightly onto a strong plastic base, ideally with more than one level and as large as possible. These hamsters are very active creatures throughout their short 3 year lives and should have an exercise wheel with solid treads fitted to the side of the cage so the hamster cannot hurt its feet.

The following are some basic care tips on these animals. Before you decide on a pet, do some more reading and research. Possibly talk to someone who has the type of pet you are considering. For further advice, or in the case of a suspected medical problem, consult a veterinarian.

Selecting
With their diverse and interesting personalities, small mammals easily capture your heart. And they fit into lifestyles where other pets would be unsuitable, such as in apartments and with novice pet owners or families that are away from home doing the day.
A wide variety of small mammals awaits you, so to pick the one that matches your lifestyle and expectations, you must learn about the needs and personalities of the different species. Do your homework before you get the pet by visiting your library or bookstore, calling a humane society or accessing one of the many computer bulletin boards [web site discussion groups] where pet owners exchange problems and experiences.
Nutrition
Food and water need to be available at all times. Many of these small creatures like to hide their food, so make sure they do not run out. Laboratory pellets as the main food source, supplemented with a good quality grain mixture a couple of times of week is the best basic diet. You can also compliment the diet with small amounts of clean, organic dark greens and fresh fruits. Be sure to remove any uneaten fresh food withing 30 minutes as it will spoil. You should also offer fresh Timothy or Alfalfa DO NOT feed your small rodent: salt, sugar, chocolate, or foods with high fat content. Healthy treats may include: plain popcorn, low sugar cereals, or bird seed. Water bottles should be used instead of dishes as they stay cleaner longer. Be sure to clean the water bottle at least once a day, using a mild soap.

HAMSTER HOUSING
HANDLING

All handling must be done gently. It is best to scoop up the hamster with both hands from underneath, but if using one hand this should be placed firmly across his back with the head facing your wrist. Hamsters have a very loose skin and can easily slip out of your hands. FEEDING
WATER

Fresh clean drinking water must always be available, kept in a special feeding bottle. GENERAL CARE
Your hamster will groom himself with his front paws. The dark spots on his sides are in fact oil glands which keep the coat sleek and shiny. Overgrown teeth can be prevented by providing hard chewing material. If they do occur they can be clipped by a skilled operator or your veterinary surgeon. Hamsters are generally very hardy, but if yours does become unwell you should seek veterinary advice. SHOPPING LIST

Caring for your hamster
General information

The life expectancy of a hamster is around 2 years. Females are sexually mature at 4 weeks and males at 6-8 weeks. There can be between 4 and 12 in a litter, which are born after a gestation period of 15-18 days.
Housing
Feeding

An adult hamster will eat between 5 and 10 g of food a day. Most proprietary hamster foods are satisfactory, provided they are fresh. Fruit, green vegetables, seeds and grains can be given to make the diet more varied and interesting. Any food that may have been treated with insecticides/fungicides should be well washed. Hamsters like to search for food, so feeding from the floor is acceptable, If preferred, ceramic or metal bowls can be used. Fresh water should be offered from wall-mounted bottles with metal sipper tubes.
Signs of disease
Although these animals may suffer from several diseases the use of an adequate diet and good housing will minimise the risk of illness. Signs to look for are:

... Books 6th Happiness About Rodentry Available SYRIAN HAMSTERS Mesocricetus auratus The Syrian Hamster is called by many names, including the "standard hamster", "fancy hamster" and the "golden hamster" (after its original wild colouration). Long haired syrians are sometimes called '"teddybear hamsters", hairless hamsters maybe called "alien hamsters" and the popular variety in the USA, the Black Syrian Hamster is also referred to as the "european black bear hamster". Because of the many names, some people will actually think that some of these varieties, particularly the black bear, are different species- but in fact, they are all the same species. Their unique traits are just mutations of colour or hair length, just as is seen in other species like rats, mice and cats. Although many hamster fanciers will say that a hamster has a good nature and can be an ideal pet for a child, I don't entirely agree. Nor do i entirely agree with those people who say hamsters are purely evil, "furry staplers". I think if you want to find such a hamster you must either go to a reputable hobby breeder who has selected for this good temperament or search and search in petshops very carefully. Out of numerous pet hamsters, obtained primarily from petshops (all in the USA, different ones, with different suppliers) only a handful of them would I rank as good natured enough to consider giving as a pet to a child. This is probably a fault of of the pet industry- pet shops or their suppliers breed for "cuteness" that sells, without taking the time a fancier would to observe animals, record keep, and breed for improvement of the line instead of profit.

Hamsters Hamsters are small, virtually tailless, velvet-furred rodents with enormous cheek pouches. They originated in the Middle East and southeastern Europe. The most common and popular, both as pets and laboratory animals, is the golden or Syrian hamster. Color and hair-type varieties of the golden hamster include cinnamon, cream, white, and "teddy bear" (the long-haired variety). Most of the hamsters sold as pets or used in research are the descendants of 3 littermates domesticated in 1930. Hamster Vital Statistics
  • Scientific name: Mesocricetus auratus Potential life span: 2-3 years Adult body weight: 100-150 grams (Adult females are slightly larger than adult males) Desirable environmental temperature range: 65-75 F Desirable relative humidity range: 30-70% Recommended age at 1st breeding: male: 10-14 weeks; female: 6-10 weeks Length of estrous (heat) cycle: 94 hours Gestation (pregnancy) period: 15 1/2-16 days Average litter size: 5-10 young Age at weaning: 3 weeks
Human Allergies to Hamster Dander: Certain people are allergic to the hair and/or dander of hamsters. People working with hamsters in laboratory situations are more likely to develop such allergies because of their continual association with them. Signs include itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, persistent cough, shortness of breath, wheezing, a skin rash, and anaphylactic shock (a true medical emergency). Owners of pet hamsters may also be susceptible, and a medical doctor should be consulted about suspected allergy problems if a hamster is kept as a pet in the household. Hamster owners with such a suspected allergy may want to consult an allergist.

Retrurn to Pocket Pet Page Care of Pet Hamsters July/August 1994 Vol. 6, No. 4 Veterinary Practice STAFF This information leaflet is designed as a method of communication between veterinarians and clients who own a hamster. Diet, handling, housing, breeding, and diseases of hamsters are discussed. if you have any questions, be sure to ask your veterinarian to answer them for you. Introduction Hamsters are common household pets. They are inexpensive, friendly, and fairly easy to care for. Hamsters are rodents, often referred to as "pocket pets" because of their small size. Some overall facts regarding hamsters are given in Table 1. Hamsters are somewhat peculiar for rodents with large cheek pouches and short, stubby tails . They have gained popularity as pets and research animals since the 1930s. The Syrian hamster's (Golden Hamster) wild habitat extend through the Middle East and south-eastern Europe. In 1930s litter of eight baby hamsters was taken to Isreal and raised as research animals. Virtually all domesticated hamsters sold as pets today are descendants of three survivors of this litter Hamsters were first introduced to the United States in 1938. Since their domestication, several color and haircoat varieties of Syrian hamsters have become common due to selective breeding. The three basic groups that now exist and are popular as pets include: the Golden hamster, the colored, short-haired Fancy hamster, and the long-haired Teddy Bear hamster. Occasionally, other species of hamsters may be encountered, but they are much less common than the Syrian hamster. The smaller, dark brown Chinese hamsters (Dwarf hamsters) are often used in biomedical research and are sometimes acquired as pets. These hamsters are recognizable by their small size, dark brown color, and black stripes over their backs. Armenian (gray) and European hamsters are two other species occasionally used in research but seldom kept as pets.
