Garfield to be the 33rd Secretary of the Treasury , serving from March 8 , 1881 until November 13 , 1881. He was later nominated by President Benjamin Harrison to the the 39th Secretary of the Treasury , serving from March 7 , 1889 until January 29 Windom was born on May 10 , 1827, in Belmont County, Ohio, the son of Hezekiah and Mary (Spencer) Windom. He married Ellen Towne Hatch in 1856. They had three Children. He studied at Martinsburg Academy at Mt. Vernon Ohio, and later studied law at the Academy under Judge R. C. Hurd. He was admitted to the bar in 1850 and practiced law in Mt. Vernon. He was elected to the office of prosecuting attorney of Knox County, Ohio. Windom moved to Winona, Minnesota in 1855 and continued his law practice. Before joining the Treasury Department, he served as Congressman from Minnesota from 1859 to 1869. Windom was a strong supporter of President Lincoln and later the Radical Republicans, with a special interest in Indian affairs. In 1870, he was appointed to fill an unexpired term in the Senate, then was elected for the next two terms, becoming Chairman of the Appropriations and Foreign Relations Committees. The Ninth President Of The United States William Henry Harrison Term: 1841 First Lady: Anna Tuthill Symmes Harrison Vice President: John Tyler John Tyler (1790-1862), 10th President Of The United States. As the first Vice President to succeed to the presidency on the death of an incumbent, he established precedents important to later vice presidents in similar circumstances. Like Andrew JOHNSON, who succeeded Abraham Lincoln in 1865, Tyler served only a single termthe nearly full term remaining after the death of William Henry Harrison in 1841. And, like Johnson, he too was engaged in bitter struggles with rivals in Congress. In 1836 the Whig party, as Jackson's opponents called themselves, adopted a strategy of encouraging several sectional leaders to run for president and vice president. The expectation was that no one would get a majority. Consequently, as provided by the Constitution, the House of Representatives would elect the president, and the Senate the vice president. This maneuver failed in its major purpose, for the electoral college yielded Martin Van Buren a clear victory as president. The vice presidential contest was decided by the Senate, with Richard M. Johnson of Kentucky the victor. Tyler, one of the vice presidential candidates, carried only four Southern states, Virginia not among them. When Harrison died after only a month in office, Tyler, on April 6, 1841, took the oath of office prescribed for the president in the Constitution. He knew that the nationalist Whigs intended to force him to accept their legislative program against his constitutional principles, but he was determined to be accepted as the president and not merely as acting president. The Cabinet and Congress agreed, and as the Constitution was not explicit on succession, both the House and Senate passed resolutions recognizing Tyler as president.

William Henry Harrison holds several presidential records. He was the oldest man inaugurated as president for a first term (until Ronald Reagan in 1981). Some believe that Harrison thought he had something to prove on March 4, 1841, the day of his inaugural. He delivered a two-hour-long inaugural address (the longest ever, another record) on a remarkably cold, rainy day all without a hat or an overcoat. Harrison seemed determined to show that a man his age was up to the rigors of the presidency, despite the weather. But Harrison's final record was for the shortest presidency. After standing out in the cold rain for two hours, President Harrison fell ill and died on April 4, 1841 31 days later. He was the first president to die in office. Orr/Wilcher/Phillips 2002 - early 1800s Vincennes, Knox County, Indiana Vincennes was the site of an important Revolutionary War battle, and was the home of U.S. President William Henry Harrison. It was also the center of government for a huge frontier territory. Examples of Vincennes’ historical wealth include the George Rogers Clark Memorial Historical Park, the Old Cathedral, the Vincennes State Historic Sites, Grouseland, the home of President William Henry Harrison, the Old French House, Fort Knox II at Oubache Trails Park, and the Indiana Military Museum. The Old French House is one of the few remaining upright-log style houses in the nation. It offers visitors a real-life glimpse of life on the early frontier at its earliest. In addition, there is an Indian museum located on the same property that reveals views of this region before settlers arrived. The Old French House is owned and operated by the Old Northwest Corporation. The largest land conquest of the Revolutionary War took place in Vincennes and the drama of that event is revisited at the George Rogers Clark Historical Park . The park features a massive granite memorial located on the site of the former British Fort Sackville which was captured by Colonel George Rogers Clark and his troop of frontiersmen and Frenchmen. The memorial was dedicated in 1936 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt.

From the terrace visitors have a spectacular panorama of the Ohio River valley. Harrison, who was born in Virginia in 1773, spent most of his adult life in Ohio and Indiana. He served as secretary to the territorial governor, senator, representative, and president, but he is most famous as a military hero. Harrison commanded the western army during the War of 1812.
