PARENT PROGRAM D.A.R.E. PARENT PROGRAM OVERVIEW
PROGRAM BACKGROUND

Following the introduction of Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) to fifth and sixth graders, school administrators and adults associated with the program saw a need to involve the family and community in the prevention effort. It was felt that families and communities have the greatest affect on child rearing practices, attitudes, values and behaviors which may in turn influence whether children will abuse drugs or become involved in violence. Current research in this area substantiates these perceptions and reinforces the need to involve families in prevention programs. The Illinois State Police, in cooperation with the Prevention Resource Center and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation, designed this program for families and other interested adults in order to enhance their knowledge and the skills needed to reduce children's risks of substance abuse and violent activity.
The D.A.R.E. Parent Program was piloted at 30 sites throughout Illinois during the 1990 Spring semester as part of the Illinois State Police D.A.R.E. expanded activities program.
Approximately 500 adults participated in the pilot program. The following activities were used to evaluate the program's effectiveness: participant completion of individual session evaluations;

Recent educational research has shown that students who have a general idea of what their career interests are do better academically than those who have no idea what they might want to do when they enter the world of work. In response to this understanding, the Hawaii State Department of Education in partnership with the University of Hawaii and the Governor's Office of Career and Technical Education, has developed a Career Pathway system in which students can take exploratory to specific career courses in high school.
Because most careers fall into natural clusters, we have linked them into six Career Pathways:

Making Child Care Work for Everyone
National Association for the Education of Young Children
The High/Scope Educational Research Foundation, in collaboration with the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), established the Program Recognition Project to identify programs offering high-quality services and above-average staff compensation, while maintaining affordable fees for families. One hundred and four programs either applied or were nominated to be considered by the Program Recognition Project. Through initial reviews and on-site assessments, the High/Scope staff selected ten exemplary programs. These programs represented a range of service types and reflected a diversity of affiliations. Almost all of the programs share certain features and goals that point to some keys to success for achieving high-quality care and education, good compensation for staff, and fees that are affordable to parents. The following are the common characteristics of the selected exemplary programs that make child care work for everyone. These programs:
