Memo Cover Page Inquiry Proposals Professional Development Area Coordinators Hawaii Education and Research Network (HERN) Summer School During the past two years, with the assistance of a major three-year demonstration project grant from the National Science Foundation's Networking Infrastructure for Education Program, HERN has focused on seeking technical and education reform answers surrounding the design, implementation and management of an integrated, statewide Internet services system for Hawaii's education institutions. In its final year, HERN, in collaboration with the University of Hawaii College of Education Master of Education in Teaching Program, plan to develop a 1997 summer program which demonstrates curricular and pedagogical reform enabled by electronic networking. eSchool Teacher Training Program Hawaii's Electronic School (eSchool), the recipient of a five - year Challenge Grant award will expand the pilot electronic-enabled classes to develop new models for teaching and learning. Training sessions will be conducted for teachers interested in developing and offering courses through eSchool. eSchool / HERN Professional Development Summer Institute (July 7 - 18, 1997)

    NOTICE: The project that is the subject of this report was approved by the Governing Board of the National Research Council, whose members are drawn from the councils of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. The members of the committee responsible for the report were chosen for their competencies and with regard for appropriate balance. This report has been reviewed by a group other than the authors according to procedures approved by a Report Review Committee consisting of members of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Institute of Medicine. The National Academy of Sciences is a private, nonprofit, self-perpetuating society of distinguished scholars engaged in scientific and engineering research, dedicated to the furtherance of science and technology and to their use for the general welfare. Upon the authority of the charter granted to it by the Congress in 1863, the Academy has a mandate that requires it to advise the federal government on scientific and technical matters. Dr. Frank Press is president of the National Academy of Sciences. The National Academy of Engineering was established in 1964, under the charter of the National Academy of Sciences, as a parallel organization of outstanding engineers. It is autonomous in its administration and in the selection of its members, sharing with the National Academy of Sciences responsibility for advising the federal government. The National Academy of Engineering also sponsors engineering programs aimed at meeting national needs, encourages education and research, and recognizes the superior achievements of engineers. Dr. Robert M. White is president of the National Academy of Engineering.

    HUD Awards $14,542,753 to Hawaii in New Grants
    Since the announcement of a $1.8 million grant to the University of Hawaii for the Alaska Native/Native Hawaiian Institutions Assisting Communities (AN/NHIAC) program back in September 2002, 15 new grants have been awarded to Hawaii. In addition, Guam received $38,215 for its Family Self-Sufficiency program; $100,000 to promote economic self-sufficiency for its public housing residents; and $1.1 Million to provide homeless assistance. The grantees are listed below, followed by two feature articles highlighting in more detail the grant awards for the new Seniors Service Coordinator Program and two Fair Housing Programs.
