COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE II:
Focus on the Education and Healthcare Sectors

  • INTRODUCTION In September 1995, in a paper presented at the inaugural Guam Economic Conference, management theory on competitive advantage was compared with business case studies in Guam, and success stories were analyzed to identify what, if any, was Guam's competitive advantage. Suggestions were then made as to how this information could be practically employed by Guam entrepreneurs.
    The main criticism of the paper at the conference was while the argument presented was sound, additional research into the substance of these opportunities should have also been undertaken to corroborate the conclusions reached.
    The purpose of this report, therefore, is to attempt to validate the conclusions reached in the previous report. In doing so, we will:
    1) Summarize the management theory on competitive advantage (which was dealt with in greater detail in the previous report) - specifically observations made in a "Competitiveness" study by Hughes and Kofe (1994) and in the ìThe Competitive Advantage of Nationsî, by Michael Porter (1990).
