Hawaii: Geography
Hawaii, the 50th state (statehood on August 21, 1959) of the United States, consists of a group of volcanic islands in the central Pacific Ocean.
The land area of these islands are the emerged tops of a chain of volcanic mountains that form eight major islands and 124 islets, stretching in a 1,500-mile crescent from Kure Island in the west to the island of Hawaii in the east, encompassing an area of 6,459 square miles (16,729 square km).
The eight major islands at the eastern end of the chain are, from west to east, Niihau, Kauai, Oahu, Molokai, Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, and the Big Island of Hawaii.
Volcanic activity has become dormant, with the exception of the volcanoes of Mauna Loa and Kilauea on the easternmost and largest island, Hawaii, where spectacular eruptions and lava flows take place from time to time. The highest Hawaiian mountains are Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa, reaching 13,796 feet (4,205 m) and 13,678 feet (4,169 m) above sea level, respectively.
There is little erosion in the geologically young areas, where the terrain is domelike and the volcanic craters are clearly defined. In the older areas the mountains have been shaped and eroded by the action of sea, rain, and wind. Their aspects thus include sharp and craggy silhouettes; abrupt, vertically grooved cliffs pocked with caves; deep valleys; collapsed craters (calderas); and coastal plains.

Hawaii Island:
Geography
Hawaii, the Big Island, has an area of 4,038 square miles and is the largest of all the Hawaiian Islands. In fact, it is larger than all the other islands combined. The population is 135,500. The County of Hawaii is comprised solely of the Island of Hawaii, with Hilo as the county seat. Hilo's population is 45,000. Volcanoes The island has some 266 miles of rugged coastline -lava fields, high seacliffs, rocky shores and limited stretches of sandy beach. It rises from sea level to the highest volcanic peaks in the islands, Mauna Kea at 13,796 feet and Mauna Loa at 13,677 feet. These two towering peaks dominate the island. Mauna Loa and adjacent Kilauea Volcano are among the world's most active volcanoes. Kilauea has been in an active phase since 1983, with almost continuous lava eruptions into the sea on the southern side of the island. The Island of Hawaii is the youngest in the chain of islands. The ongoing eruptions of Kilauea, in fact, continue to add to the island's size with buildup of lava on the coastline. As measured by comparison of its structural lava flows, the age of Hawaii is about 700,000 years, very young compared to the other Hawaiian Islands. Framework Demonstration Project
The State of Hawaii has applied for and received a Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) grant to carry out a framework demonstration project. The purpose of this project is to illustrate the application of the framework concept envisioned by the FGDC in their efforts in establishing a National Digital Geospatial Data Framework The project focuses on developing a cadastral framework data layer for the Island of Molokai. Participants in this effort are gathering boundary data for large land holdings including parcels of land owned by the State of Hawaii, the County of Maui, the federal government and large private land owners. For a detailed description of this project, please visit the Framework Demonstration Website which is being updated frequently by the prinicipals of the project, The University of Hawaii Geography Department. The federal grant is providing an opportunity for geospatial data users in the State of Hawaii to develop a process for collecting, recording and using a framework data layer. Once this process is established, it could then be applied to the entire State of Hawaii. Furthermore, the intent of this effort is to encourage geospatial data developers in Hawaii to use the framework layer as a standard reference layer when developing new spatial data. As such, all users of spatial data in Hawaii are invited to participate in this project. The following agencies and organizations have committed to participate in this effort:
  • Dept. of Land and Natural Resources, Forestry and Wildlife Division, Historic Preservation Division

Indigenous students silent no more
By Susan Kreifels
Star-Bulletin SARAH Daniels always had walked through life "thinking I'm white." A Punahou grad who grew up in Kailua, she never really considered the Hawaiian mix of her blood, nor did she dare to question what professors taught about her Hawaiian ancestry. "I never wanted to notice before," said Daniels, a 22-year-old senior at the University of Hawaii-Manoa. Then Daniels enrolled in Hawaiian studies, where activists like Haunani-Kay Trask required heavy reading about the islands' indigenous people. Daniels began to question her professors' teachings about native Hawaiians. Last semester she filed a complaint about a Hawaii geography class that no longer is required for Hawaiian studies majors. "When classes are taught by mainlanders, they don't understand where we're coming from," Daniels said. "They analyze and conceptualize in terms of Western culture."
Counselor sees pattern
Daniels is one of a growing number of native Hawaiian student activists on the UH-Manoa campus. Many of them visit Jill Nunokawa, UH-Manoa's civil rights counselor, who sees "a pattern emerging out of certain departments and colleges, basically denial into the graduate programs, or treatment of native Hawaiians once they do get into certain programs."

Be a Geo Detective Connie Mark, Bernice Kihara, Mary Frances Higuchi Hawaii Geographic Alliance November 5, 1999 Purpose: Every place is unique. This lesson uses physical and human characteristics to help students explore what makes their community unique. Students create a GeoMystery of their unique community by drawing pictures and writing clues in a way that doesn't give the reader the name of their community. The reader will need to use necessary resources to guess the location of that community. Students will compare their community with other communities. The Internet makes learning global. The GeoMystery that students create will be placed on, or linked to, the Hawaii Geographic Alliance website and become part of an electronic atlas of communities for everyone to use. The electronic atlas will enable students to explore and compare several communities. This unit can be adapted to any grade. Focus Questions: How do physical and human characteristics shape the uniqueness of a community? How does your community compare to others?
