W hat we eat where it comes from, how it is raised, processed, cooked affects our health in many ways. Traditional native diets in those few places in the world where people still mostly eat what they raise, hunt, gather, fish have been found to promote health and long life, for reasons only gradually coming to be understood. I t isn't practical to recommend now for most of us that we eat buffalo, harvest wild rice, farm corn in single hills, gather waupatoo or teepsinna. We'll see why those traditional foods are health-promoting as modern biological and medical sciences have belatedly learned. We'll see practical ways to improve health by food and diet starting when you are young to eat well to avoid health problems later. Cultural food stories and practical recipes are here too. InfoSeek Select Site for this Traditional Foods section. InfoSeek also selected First Nations, Canadian Native and Inuit as worth checking out. It's always nice to be appreciated. I really put in a lot of work on this section the recipes take quite a while to type and index-link. I have lots of fun with this food section. But I think it's appropriate to point out at the start of info for fun (good eating) and health that some Native people youth and elders especially are going to be affected to the point of malnutrition, hunger, and serious health problems due to the political direction the U.S. is taking. Here's a couple of brief statements from Native leaders about that. I hope you will take the time to read and think about them, if you are not Indian, but just interested in our culture or our foods and recipes. Indian people (U.S.) already know, and are worrying.

"Why teach global health issues in Scotland?"

Peter Cawston
08 August 2000 THE GOALS OF MEDICAL EDUCATION In the guidance document Tomorrow's doctors the Education Committee of the General Medical Council give prominence to the need for medical students to gain knowledge about " how illness behaviour varies between social and cultural groups" and "the environmental and social determinants of disease, the principles of disease surveillance, the means by which diseases may spread, and the analysis of the burden of disease within the community". The goal of medical education is also to foster the development of professional attitudes which include "respect for patients and colleagues that encompasses, without prejudice, diversity of background, opportunity, language, culture and way of life" and "willingness to use his or her professional capabilities to contribute to community as well as to individual patient welfare". It is impossible to develop an understanding of the determinants of health and respect for diversity of culture without understanding the global forces which impact on health, how societies respond to health needs, and how cultures more generally understand and construct health and disease. Such an understanding requires exposure at an early stage to these issues. In order to meet the needs on tomorrow's doctors, medical schools have a responsibility to include the opportunity for all medical students to learn about the international context of health and disease.

"A call to teach global health on the medical curriculum in Scotland

Report on a meeting of the Scottish International Primary Care Network
Department of General Practice, Edinburgh
20 June 2000 Student representatives have issued a challenge for medical schools in Scotland to introduce global health issues into the medical curriculum. Nadya van Ginneken and Elika Pope, third year medical students from Edinburgh University, described the rapid growth of the Medical Student's International Network ) to a meeting hosted by the Department of General Practice in Edinburgh. Formed only three years ago, MedSIN now have student groups in all but two medical schools in the UK. Despite this evidence of the interest in global and international health among many medical students, there are few opportunities for exposure to these issues in the undergraduate curriculum. The students argued that the basis for such teaching must be the concept of health as a human right. The opportunity to explore this principal, based on the WHO declaration of Alma Ata , should be given to medical students early on in their medical training while attitudes are still being formed. They also described the inadequacies of their experience in learning about the changing global patterns of communicable diseases, malnutrition, obesity, alcohol, drugs of abuse, smoking and other global determinants of health. The curriculum provides little opportunity for gaining an understanding of the NHS in comparison with other health care systems, and how these impact on the burden of disease.

March 14, 2001 The original meaning of the word doctor is teacher. So, rather than have someone tell you how to achieve good health, you should have someone teach you about health and then you'll know how you can achieve good health. There's a saying that goes, "If you give a man food, you feed him for a day. But, if you give him the tools, you feed him for a lifetime." But if you teach him, he can learn to feed himself. So your challenge is to think about health in a different way. Do you watch TV? TV, especially commercials, programs us not to think for ourselves. Have you seen that commercial were a guy has a runny nose, fever and headache? He's sick, so he needs the runny nose, fever and headache medicine so he can be healthy. He has a NyQuil deficiency ;-) We're being trained to think that health is the absence of symptoms and that all we have to do is take a pill to be healthy. Well, health doesn't come in a pill. First we need to define health. According to Webster's Dictionary, Health is the mind, body and organs, all functioning 100%. If someone goes out and drinks a gallon of Vodka and throws up, besides being stupid, is he unhealthy? No. If he doesn't throw up and goes into a coma and dies, then he was unhealthy. Throwing up is his body functioning to get rid of a toxin. If you have the flu and are running a fever, are you unhealthy? No, your body is trying to kill the bacteria or remove a toxin. You're functioning properly and are, therefore, healthy. It's OK to be sick (have symptoms), it's not OK to be unhealthy.

Overview of Recovery
The concept of recovery is having substantial impact on consumers and families, mental health research, and service delivery. Before describing that impact, this section first turns to an introduction and definitions.
Introduction and Definitions
Recovery is a concept introduced in the lay writings of consumers beginning in the 1980s. It was inspired by consumers who had themselves recovered to the extent that they were able to write about their experiences of coping with symptoms, getting better, and gaining an identity (Deegan, 1988; Leete, 1989). Recovery also was fueled by longitudinal research uncovering a more positive course for a significant number of patients with severe mental illness (Harding et al., 1992), although findings across several studies were variable (Harrow et al., 1997) (see discussion in Chapter 4). Recovery is variously called a process, an outlook, a vision, a guiding principle. There is neither a single agreed-upon definition of recovery nor a single way to measure it. But the overarching message is that hope and restoration of a meaningful life are possible, despite serious mental illness (Deegan, 1988; Anthony, 1993; Stocks, 1995; Spaniol et al., 1997). Instead of focusing primarily on symptom relief, as the medical model dictates, recovery casts a much wider spotlight on restoration of self-esteem and identity and on attaining meaningful roles in society.

If you've got a bachelor's or master's degree in a health-related disciplines, this might be the assignment for you.
The majority of Peace Corps Volunteers serving in health programs have a bachelor's degree (which can be in any discipline) and a strong interest in health, while some have degrees in a health-related area. Some have significant construction experience and an interest in water and sanitation.
Health Volunteers help at the grass-roots level, working with local governments, clinics, non-governmental organizations, and communities where the need is most urgent and the impact can be the greatest. Their efforts are concentrated on outreach, awareness, and prevention programs that teach public health, hygiene, and sanitation.
Volunteers also help expand clean water supplies and manage sanitation needs by digging new wells, building latrines, and teaching communities how to maintain these structures.
Throughout the world, health Volunteers are making differences in people's lives today. And by helping communities take more responsibility for their own health care, they're making life better for tomorrow.
