The Truths Taught in the True Esoteric Schools In the schools now forming, the emphasis is upon soul awareness, [276] spiritual knowledge, and understanding of the higher forces, direct and first-hand knowledge of the spiritual Hierarchy which governs the life of our planet, a comprehension (progressively developed) of the divine nature and of the Plan which, in obedience to the will of God, is increasingly conditioning world affairs. The laws governing the individual, humanity and the kingdoms in nature are studied and the whole Science of Relations (as it is unfolded in our evolving world) becomes the practical interest of the disciple. As he establishes right relations with himself, with the world of spiritual being, in the world of human living and with all forms of divine life, the awakening of his own nature will automatically take place, his centers will become vital sources of spiritual power, and his entire constitution will swing into rhythmic activity and consequent usefulness. All this will, however, happen because of his correct adjustment to God and man, to his unfolding understanding of divine purpose and to his knowledge of the various scientific techniques and laws which condition all phenomena, man included.

B C D ... EDITORIAL BOX R is for Respecting Differences The world of transgender people - those who think of themselves as born into the wrong gender and who sometimes seek to change their appearance through cross-dressing, hormone therapy or surgery - is almost by definition a conflicted one. And considering that transgender people often don't seek medical care precisely because they are misunderstood, the confusion can become self-perpetuating. Lori Kohler, medical director of the San Francisco General Hospital Family Health Center, and a specialist in medical care for transgender people, has set about to bridge this gap between the medical community and this unseen world of patients - and to do so with compassion and a touch of humor. "I think that gender is such a basic part of who we all are that it is quite frightening to people when they start challenging it, changing things around and suggesting that it is a mutable aspect of human experience." Moreover, Kohler understands not only the problems that transgender people face - the alienation, the assumption that their condition is pathological, the black-market "therapies" - but also the difficulties non-transgender people have in relating to them. "I have to spend a lot of time with people speaking about gender before I can even get to transgender." In doing so, this graduate of San Francisco General's family practice residency program gets people to think about themselves and how they too may not exactly fit the definition of what is stereotypically "male" or "female." Her hope is to crack open rigid boundaries and show them that what transgender people are doing is similar - being creative about what it means to be male or female.

Montreal General Hospital
The Montreal General Hospital The Montreal General Hospital was the first North American hospital to conduct clinical teaching at the patient's bedside. Its physicians made up a significant part of the faculty of Canada's first medical school, the Montreal Medical Institute, which became the McGill University Faculty of Medicine in 1829. Supported by prominent benefactors, including the Honourable John Richardson and several generations of the Molson family, the hospital gained recognition as it successfully fulfilled a dual role: to care for the sick and poor and to teach the most modern medical techniques to new generations of doctors. As the decades passed, the Montreal General Hospital grew in both size and scope. On May 30, 1955, the hospital moved 103 public and semi-private patients from its site on Dorchester Boulevard to a new site on the southern edge of Mount Royal. The MGH soon claimed nearby lots and buildings, merging with other institutions, including the Western General Hospital, until it reached its present size. As the MGH's role in the care of Montrealers has grown, public funding has become essential to its continued service. Both public and privately donated funds are crucial to the hospital's operation.

The fact that we remember them is due, in no small part, to the resources you provide to the millions of researchers, scholars and tourists who visit the Library of Congress and the millions more who use its [electronic] services each year.” According to Mr. Satcher, the origin of medicine can be traced to 5000 B.C., with its close relationship to religion and astronomy in Babylonia and Mesopotamia. “Ancient practitioners trusted the gods and looked to the stars to treat disease,” said Mr. Satcher. He cited the achievements of Imhotep, “the first bona fide physician,” who lived in Egypt in 3000 B.C.

Cavities: The Most Common Childhood Disease Can Be Prevented
Parents Hold the Key to Young Healthy Smiles Cavities may still be the single most common childhood disease, however parents can easily play a pivotal role in preventing them, according to a new report in the January/February 2003 issue of General Dentistry , the Academy of General Dentistry's peer-reviewed clinical journal. Cavities, an infectious disease caused by acid-forming bacteria found in dental plaque, destroys the tooth's structure. Young children, ages one through six, are more susceptible to develop cavities because their primary teeth have thinner, weaker enamel are a prime target for plaque and primary teeth have more spaces between teeth where food is more likely to linger which creates a breeding ground for cavity causing bacteria. Shahrbanoo Fadavi, DDS, MS lead author of the report, noticed a cavity pattern among children ages two to four. She found cavities are most likely to first form in the front upper teeth, then the first upper and lower molar and then the lower canines (the pointy ones). "This pattern happens because parents often put their child to bed with a bottle containing milk or sugary juice. The child then falls asleep leaving teeth susceptible to acid-forming bacteria that develops into cavities." says Dr. Fadavi. Parental knowledge is essential to create a good foundation for children's oral health. "Learning about proper oral care should be just as much of a priority as pre-natal care. Parents-to-be should take the initiative and ask health care professionals about a baby's oral health," suggests Dr. Fadavi.

Accidents don't have to happen By Dr Rob Hicks Young and old suffer most Trying to prevent an accident Accidents will happen ... For further information Accidents will happen, or so the saying goes. Each week, 43,000 children under the age of fourteen are taken to hospital in the UK after an accident. But most accidents, and the pain and suffering they bring, would not happen if we took more care and used our common sense. Young and old suffer most Most accidents involve the old and, in particular, the young. Children are impulsive, adventurous, and inexperienced, and, the older people become, the less agile and quick they are. Each year, over 2 million children need treatment in a casualty department following an accident. That means approximately 256 children are seen every hour in a hospital casualty department somewhere around the UK. On average, by the time a child reaches 15 years of age, he/she will have been to a casualty department at least 3 times after an accident. Preventing accidents...

Hospital Hints Going to the hospital is somewhat like traveling to another country - the sights are unfamiliar and the people you meet there often speak a foreign language. No matter what the reason for the trip - whether it's an overnight visit for a few tests or a longer stay for medical treatment or major surgery - nearly everyone worries about entering the hospital. Learning more about hospitals and the people who work there may help make your hospital stay less stressful. The following hints are meant for people who plan to enter the hospital by choice rather than for those who go to the hospital because of an emergency. (Information about emergency care is at the end of this Age Page.) Relatives and friends of patients who are admitted to the hospital also may find this information useful. What to Bring It's best to pack as little as you can. However, be sure to bring the following items:
  • nightclothes, bathrobe, and sturdy slippers (label all personal items) comfortable clothes to wear home a toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo, comb and brush, deodorant, and razor
