Tips On How To Have A Healthy Heart If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what would it take to avoid a heart surgeon? Would you believe a good vitamin + mineral supplement ? Add to that some omega-3 oil (canola, flax, fish) and a diet high in fiber but low in processed foods and hydrogenation hardened fat. Also, maintain a good lifestyle (don't smoke, control weight, some exercise and manage stress well) and you will improve your general health and prevent or help heart disease.
This not-for-profit public interest site looks at the food, supplement and prevention side of the picture because of my long-term interest in nutritional research. Nutrition is my interest, not my job, so this site doesn't generate money or sell anything. You'll find tips and info that are likely to improve your health, your "distance to disease". So what's a healthy diet? Science shows that it is a varied diet of relatively unprocessed foods that include veggies, whole fruits, (brown) rice, and grains that retain part of their original kernel- structure . Those are the foods that became scarce in Western diets. If you can't recognize part of the original food, the item is processed or refined.

The normal heart, defects, heart murmurs, kawasaki disease, treatment, school programs and feeding Category Health Child Health Cardiovascular Disorders......Children heart disease Health, Kawasaki disease is an example of acquired heartdisease that occurs primarily in children who are 5 years old or younger.
http://www.americanheart.org/children/
The two types of heart disease in children are "congenital" and "acquired." Congenital heart disease (also known as a congenital heart defect) is present at birth. Some defects in this category are patent ductus arteriosis, atrial septal defects and ventricular septal defects. Acquired heart disease, which develops sometime during childhood, includes diseases such as Kawasaki disease, rheumatic fever and infective endocarditis. Common diagnostic tests for these diseases are explained here.
About 40,000 children are born with a heart defect each year. Most of these children can benefit from surgery even if the defect is severe. When surgery is necessary, many medical treatments are available to help the heart work properly. There is nothing that parents could have done to prevent these defects. Learn about conditions that can interfere with the work of the heart and treatment options in this section. Kawasaki disease is an example of acquired heart disease that occurs primarily in children who are 5 years old or younger. Although medical knowledge of the disease is still developing, there are steps you can take to recognize the symptoms and deal with the disease's effects. At least 8 of every 1,000 infants born each year have a heart defect. About 1 million Americans with cardiovascular defects are alive today. Though research is ongoing, at least 35 defects have now been identified.

Angioplasty (PTCA) and stents

Angioplasty (or PTCA) is a catheterization procedure in which blocked coronary arteries are unblocked using balloons, tiny drills, laser or other techniques. Stents are tiny metal scaffolds that are applied to the inside of a diseased artery, then expanded to hold the artery open. Aortic aneurysm and vascular disease
Aortic aneurysm, or dilation of the aorta, is responsible for thousands of deaths each year. Other forms of vascular heart disease also cause substantial mortality and loss of function. Arrhythmias and their treatment

Excerpts from For women, increased awareness is the key to prevention. By MICHELE HAMILTON, Los Angeles Times Heart disease has long been considered an illness of men; in fact, it is more prevalent in women. More than 500,000 women die each year from heart attacks and strokes10 times more than die from breast cancer. To combat this problem, every woman must become more aware of heart disease risks and take active steps to reduce those risks. First, the bad news. When having a heart attack, a woman is less likely to suffer typical symptoms, reducing the chance that either she or her doctor will recognize the diagnosis. She is also less likely than a man to seek immediate medical attention, increasing the probability of dying or having major damage from the heart attack. Unfortunately, standard treatments such as "clot busting" drugs, angioplasty (using a balloon to open blocked arteries) and bypass surgery, though generally quite effective in women, pose greater risks than they do in men. Also, our common diagnostic tests (like the treadmill stress test) were initially designed for men and have turned out to be less accurate for women. As a result, for women, treadmill tests need to be supplemented with imaging techniques such as echocardiography (ultrasound) or nuclear images (using intravenous radioisotopes).

19. Wine And Health
Report presented by the University of California, Davis, on the influence of phenolics on coronary heart disease.
http://wineserver.ucdavis.edu/cuttingedge/research/winehealth.htm
Wine and Heart Disease by Dr. Andrew L. Waterhouse Phenolic substances may be the compounds responsible for the reduced incidence of coronary heart disease seen in people who regularly consume wine. Wine has been espoused for centuries as a superior beverage. Louis Pasteur said, 'Wine is the most healthful and most hygienic of beverages,' and Plato remarked, 'No thing more excellent nor more valuable than wine was ever granted mankind by God.' Common to these endorsements is the view that wine is as good for the body as it is for the spirit. Modern scientific research supports this perception. David Goldberg at the University of Toronto has recently published an amusing and enlightening review of this subject. Despite the issues surrounding total mortality, it is clear that moderate alcohol consumption itself reduces CHD mortality. Several mechanisms for this are now recognised, of which the best known is alcohol's ability to alter blood lipid levels by lowering total cholesterol and raising high density lipoprotein (HDL) levels.(7) While future epidemiology studies can be designed to take into account such factors that still raise questions, epidemiological investigations are never capable of determining specific causes for observed effects. Therefore, it is important for chemists and biologists to establish whether or not there is a molecular mechanism by which wine nutrients could affect CHD.
