Suggestions for General Inquirers
The cult phenomenon is a difficult area to understand. Popular press analyses tend to offer limited insights. Cultic groups often deliberately obscure their actual goals and practices. Few groups have been studied scientifically. Affected persons are often reluctant to talk about their experiences, frequently because doing so involves much pain. There is no simple, easily understood explanation for why people join and remain in seemingly destructive groups. And public misconceptions about cults and cult joining tend to invite misinterpretations of the available information. The central public misconception about the cult phenomenon is that only "sick" people from troubled families would join "weird" groups. Tragedies, such as the Heavens’ Gate or Jonestown suicides political psychotherapeutic , and even commercial , as well as religious. And few people realize that research studies indicate that several million Americans have had at least a transient involvement with a cultic group, although many, buying into common misconceptions, may not recognize the cultic nature of the involvement.

Five years ago this month, the world learned the bizarre details of a mass suicide at a mansion in a well–to–do San Diego suburb.
Apparently, they also were waiting for a spacecraft that was supposed to pick them up and take them to what they described as a higher plane of existence.

Interviews with news organizations five years ago left DiAngelo angry at the media, but he agreed reluctantly to a phone interview with The Associated Press last week.
Little remains from the group whose androgynous-looking men and women downed a lethal concoction of pudding or applesauce spiked with vodka and barbiturates. They sealed their fate by placing plastic bags over their heads.
He is asking a minimum of $39,000 for the 1992 Ford van, which cult members once used for road trips to SeaWorld and Las Vegas .
Two other cultists later followed with similar suicides.

This is from Marcello Truzzi, a sociologist who specializes in "scientific anomalies" and sociology of science. Barry Forwarded message Date: Thu, 27 Mar 1997 23:08:40 -0500 From: Marcello Truzzi Subject: FYI re the suicide cult and remote viewing allegations For those of you interested in the current "cult" suicides, here is some perhaps useful additional information. ABC TV news this evening identified the leader called "Doe" as the man who earlier called himself "Bo" of an earlier cult called "Bo and Peep" or "The Two" which began in 1975! (Peep died of cancer in 1985.) In 1993, taking the name "Total Overcomers Anonymous," they took an ad out in USA TODAY stating their beliefs but with an apocalyptic tone not present earlier and which perhaps can now be seen as a signal of what was to come. Sociologists Robert W. Balch has written extensively about the earlier Bo and Peep UFO cult. Though this group called "WW Higher Source" (which had a design business web site called "Heaven's Gate") did reportedly think that the Hale-Bopp comet had a UFO hiding behind it and that the comet was acting as a "marker" announcing the arrival of spacecraft, their beliefs about this appear to have no special connection with the remote viewers' comments on the Art Bell show about the Hale-Bopp comet being accompanied by a supposed UFO in a now discredited picture of that UFO (next to and not behind) the comet, as was claimed by Dr. Courtney Brown (not Ed Dames as Randi has asserted). This group, the core members of which have worked together for over 20 years, already had a rather full blown UFO centered belief system going. They did not need the remote viewers for their conclusions which were well laid out for some years before Hale-Bopp was even discovered.

Battle brewing over control of Heaven's Gate business
AP Wireservices (selections)
SAN DIEGO (AP) A former Heaven's Gate member and the county are disputing ownership of the suicide cult's World Wide Web design business, which may be worth $1 million despite all its employees being dead. The county plans to auction off the cult's earthly belongings and give the proceeds to surviving family members, said Susan Jamme, the county's deputy public administrator in charge of the case. But Richard Ford, a former member who discovered the cultists' 39 bodies in a rented Rancho Santa Fe mansion on March 26, said members wanted him to assume ownership of the business known as Higher Source. ``If they want to start some ugly, post-death battle then we may have to pursue to legal action,'' said Ford's attorney, Robert Zakari. ``The county is interested in making money under the ruse of protecting the families.''

Lawsuit: Maryland cult task force is religious inquisition
A Maryland task force studying religious cults on college campuses is violating constitutional rights and conducting a "religious inquisition," according to a lawsuit filed by Seventh-day Adventists and Unification Church members. The suit, filed Monday, alleges that the state General Assembly has "determined that it is both unnecessary and harmful for students to think for themselves." The plaintiffs, which include the International Coalition for Religious Freedom, funded primarily by Rev. Sun Myung Moon's Unification Church, claim the Task Force to Study the Effects of Cult Activities on Public Senior Higher Education Institutions is violating the establishment and free-exercise clauses of the FirstAmendment. "The government cannot, absolutely cannot, get involved in adjudicating what's a right religion and what's a wrong religion," said Kendrick Moxon, a Los Angeles civil rights attorney representing the plaintiffs. The suit seeks an injunction against the task force, as well as a declaration that the inquiry is unconstitutional.

Rachael Singerman Cult. The very word sends shivers down our collective spine as we envision FBI shootouts and satanic rituals. Fear and fascination are often associated with cults, but the most basic question is rarely answered: what is a cult? "Most explanations are situational," says Anne Rubin, an associate professor in the history department. In other words, the classification of a cult varies depending on the era in which one lives. Indeed, it is likely that you, my dear reader, were (and possibly still are) a member of a cult. The Merriam-Webster Collegiate dictionary offers four distinct definitions that include a wide range of organizations from Heaven’s Gate to Boy Scouts of America and even the Catholic Church. The first definition is about formal religious veneration, a system of religious beliefs and ritual and its body of adherents. The original meaning of the word "cult" is derived from the Latin word cultus meaning adoration and a later French word colere, to cultivate. Using this definition, all religious movements from Judaism to Buddhism are characterized as cults because they seek to instill love and loyalty to a certain set of beliefs. However, due to the pejorative connotation that cults have picked up over the past few centuries, "cult" is rarely used as a reference to mainstream religions. Biblical scholars, archeologists and many other academic disciplines that study the ancient or primitive societies still utilize the word "cult".

By Brother Michael J. Baldasaro After browsing their web site, it appears to me that these people were not a religious cult at all but rather they were mostly simply folk who believed that they were aliens from out in space who had to go back the way they did, by killing themselves whtn the comet Hale Bopp passed by the earth in the late1980's. In the end they made a mess in someone elses home to wit: leaving behind their dead smelly corpses for their earthling landlord and state to clean-up. Were they were enlightened children of IAM "God", doing His/Her work and setting a good example via the Golden Rule "Do unto others as you would have others do unto you". Were they real aliens from out in space and does it really matter?
Not really - we shall be known by our works, Revelation Chap. 22. If they were real space aliens, were they dirty filthy un-caring aliens who had no respect for other peoples property ie.

SCOPE:
In late March of 1997, 39 cult members of the Heavens Gate cult committed suicide in a supposed attempt to link up with a UFO they believed to be following the comet Hale-Bopp. The almost 80 Branch Davidians who died in Waco in 1992 and the more than 900 individuals from the Peoples Temple who died in Guyana in 1978 are just some of the examples of cult members following their leaders to their death. While the tragedy of these cults suggests to some that society has an obligation to respond to cults, others believe cult members have the right to do whatever they freely choose.

The Heaven's Gate Cult
By Gretchen Passantino
The Heaven's Gate cult is one of literally thousands of millennial cults, including hundreds of UFO-based cults around the world. They attract followers by promising escape from expected cataclysmic events that supposedly will signal the end of this millennium. The Heaven's Gate cult is the last stage in the almost three-decade transformation of a vagabond couple's UFO delusions into a sophisticated Internet suicide cult. The Heaven's Gate cult was led by a man named Marshall Applewhite, who claimed that his spiritual name was "Do." He began his "Star Trek" in the early 1970s with a female partner, Bonnie Nettles, who used the spiritual name "Ti" (pronounced "Tee"). (She died of cancer in 1985.) Bo and Peep (Do and Ti) believed that they would fulfill Rev. 11 by being killed, lying dead in the street for three days, and then being "raised" from the dead into the space ship, along with their followers. As the day for their "sacrifice" approached, they preached that their death and "resurrection" would prove the truthfulness of their preaching. The Two and their followers disappeared by early 1976, and over time most of the followers returned to normal life. The group resurfaced at various times with various names during the subsequent decades. They paid for full-page ads in many newspapers nationwide during 1988, and again in 1993. (Ominously, their ad in USA Today and other newspapers warned that anyone who truly desired to enter the Kingdom of Heaven would have to give up everything including their human existence. In 1995, the group entered its final phase:

They usually prey on confused young people, separating them from their families at a time when their judgment is weakest. The cults provide support networks for young people with adjustment problems or low self esteem. The most famous cult group for many years was the Unification Church run by the Korean Dr. Sung Myung Moon. Thousands of young "Moonies" would go door to door selling flowers and soliciting money for the church, sleeping in vans or communal dormitories and preaching the sect's teachings on the street. In controversial cases, parents had to kidnap and "de-program" their own children to save them from the cult. Other cults and millennial movements have from time to time caused shocking events such as mass suicides. In 1997, for example, 39 members of the "Heavens Gate" organization committed suicide together in an event designed to coincide with the arrival of the
