The basic hedgehog pet care
There is a fairly new type of pet that is quickly gaining in popularity with both adults and children; it is the African Pygmy Hedgehog. This cute little creature measures about 6 inches long from snout to tail and on an average, weighs in right at one pound. Small, docile and easily tamed, the hedgehog makes an ideal pet for any type of home including apartments. When acquiring a hedgehog there are a few basic requirements he or she will need. bodyOffer(29341) Cage - A large cage is a must. The typical hamster cage with wheel will not provide the needed room a hedgehog needs in which to exercise in. When making a cage, it is important to make it warm (but not hot) and without drafts and of a material that can be easily cleaned. Bedding – Cat litter is not recommended as a bedding product for hedgehogs. When the urine and litter mix, fumes can be produced that may be deadly to the hedgehog. Newspaper makes an excellent bedding material as it allows the hedgehog to burrow while being absorbent and easy to change. Avoid cedar shavings as fumes can be harmful to the pet. Temperature – The ideal temperature for keeping hedgehogs indoors is between 65 and 80 degrees Fahrenheit. If the temperature is too hot, the hedgehog will sleep to avoid the heat and if it is too cold, the hedgehog may go into hibernation.

Welcome to About Hedgehogs. If you are considering getting a hedgehog as a pet than this is a good site to get the basics. The following are a few basic facts about Hedgehogs:
  • Hedgehogs are mammals that are related to moles and shrews. Their food consists of insects. The spiny hedgehogs are found in Africa and Eurasia, except SE Asia. They have rounded bodies up to 13 in. (33 cm) long, very short tails, and pointed snouts; their backs and sides are covered with stiff spines and their undersides with coarse hair. They are usually brown and yellow in color. When frightened, a hedgehog rolls itself into a tight ball with its spines pointing outward; when rolled up it is invulnerable to almost any predator.
Hedgehogs are not porcupines or vice versa. This is a common myth. That noted, if you are interested in buying a hedgehog as a pet, be advised that you should only buy one. Especially if you are a first time buyer. They are unique animals and it is best to always start out with one. Please feel free to look through our site and if you have any questions or suggestions, don’t hesitate to

Hedgehogs are nocturnal and therefore are active in the evenings. If they are allowed to run in the house, they tend to hide in corners or under furniture. Many hedgehogs dig in carpets or in houseplants and dirt if accessible and will forage for spiders and insects in the home. Most hedgehogs prefer quiet environments and may react with fright at loud noises. They prefer dimmed lighting to bright sunlight or room lights. Although hedgehogs are being bred commercially, their behavior is that of a non-domesticated animal. While young hedgies do not mind being held, many adults resist handling and struggle to be let loose. Adult females tend to allow handling more than adult males. Many individuals do not interact with humans, no matter how much handling they received when they were young. Very few hedgehogs bite, but they might "puff up," and adult males may hiss. They are solitary animals except for mating, and usually must be housed separately even if raised with a same-sex littermate.

How do I take care of a hedgehog?
The hedgehog is an interesting, exotic pet that is becoming very popular. Hedgehogs are cute little furless creatures that are quite timid. According to "Exotic Pet Care" published by Wingers Publishing, hedgehogs are usually friendly. Some mature hedgehogs do not like to be held and will try to get away. Hedgehogs rarely bite, but they may curl up into a ball, puff out their quills, and hiss when frightened. "Exotic Pet Care" goes on to say, hedgehogs will sometimes behave strangely by salivating and foaming at the mouth. They may react this way when something new, such as an unfamiliar odor, is encountered. This behavior is quite normal and should not be a cause for concern. The same article recommends housing a hedgehog in an enclosure that has a solid bottom and sides high enough to prevent escape. Aquariums and pet taxis make good enclosures. They can be lined with pine shavings or shredded newspaper. To help keep the cage clean for a longer period of time, droppings should be removed each day. The entire cage should be thoroughly cleaned at least once a week, depending on the type of bedding being used. If strong cleaners are used, be sure to thoroughly rinse the cage to avoid exposing the hedgehog to harmful fumes. "Exotic Pet Care" suggests equipping the cage with an exercise wheel designed especially for hedgehogs. Wire wheels are not safe for hedgehogs and should not be used. Since hedgehogs are timid creatures, you may want to provide a place to hide within the cage. A paper lunch sack works well, since it is disposable and easily replaced.

Ness Exotic Wellness Center www.nessexoticwellness.biz Robert D. Ness, DVM Hedgehogs are nocturnal insectivorous mammals belonging to the family Erinaceidae Two species of hedgehogs are kept as pets, the European hedgehog ( Erinaceus europaeus ) and the African Pygmy hedgehog ( Atelerix albiventris ). The African Pygmy hedgehog is the species kept in the United States The European hedgehog can grow to twelve inches in length and nearly three pounds in weight. By contrast, the African hedgehog only measures six to nine inches in length and about one pound in weight. The normal coloration is white or cream colored ventrum and face, with white and black or brown banded quills. They raise their quills and roll into a tight ball as a defensive mechanism. Pet Suitability Hedgehogs are not appropriate pets for everyone. These pets are best suited for adults and older children because of the prickly quills that can injure a child. They are solitary and nocturnal animals, which is in contrast to the behavioral characteristics of more traditional pets. The average life span in captivity is four to six years, with potential longevity of nearly ten years of age. Living Conditions Hedgehogs are very active and energetic at night, requiring room to run and exercise away from the owner’s sleeping quarters.

Class: Mammalia

Family: Erinaceidae
Subfamily: Erinaceinae
Genus: Atelerix
Species: Atelerix Albiventris
African Pygmy Hedgehogs are an insectivore, that will grow to about 6 to 9 inches in length, and will weigh about one pound when full grown. The average life span is five to seven years. They are nocturnal, so they will sleep during the day, and will be up at night. This is not to say they won't be up at all during the day. If your up and around, your Hedgehog may take on your schedule. They do require the contrast of light and dark, so you don't want to shield them away from light totally. They will be sensitive to bright light. Hedgehogs have quills that cover their body. They use the quills to protect themselves, whenever they feel they are in harms way. When threatened, they will stiffen their quills and roll into a ball. Once they calm down, they will relax and unroll. They don't shoot their quills, nor are they barbed. They can lose a few quills now and then. Hedgehogs are non allergenic and are odorless. Although Hedgehogs are available in many colors, gray is what is most available. The best age to acquire a pet hedgehog is shortly after they have been weaned after about 6-8 weeks of age. Hedgehogs are completely independent by this stage, and adapt to new owners much more readily when young. If the pet store, or breeder handles the hedgehog's, then even an older one will adapt nicely.

We were all rewarded by this unusual friendship when Bella became much easier to handle and one of Connor’s first words was “BA”, asking for her. The 6 Basic Needs of Hedgehog Care Quick-Jump Basic Care Introduction Air Food Shelter ... Water What IS a Hedgehog?
Basic Care Introduction
When trying to decide how to best to care for your hedgehog, you need to consider what their lives are like in the wild. Foragers and hunters by nature, hedgehogs spend a great deal of thought and energy each day finding food. As a small animal, they also spend this time trying to avoid becoming someone else's food. (Most notably large birds.) A hedgehog left to sit in a tiny cage all day with nothing to do will soon become fat, bored, and not a very good pet. Likewise, a hedgehog kept in an area where it constantly feels threatened (extremely high levels of noise and/or activity) will become defensive and skittish thinking it needs to protect itself.
Another thing to consider is the basic needs of all living creatures. Every living creature needs six basic things, whether a fish, a bird, a horse, a human, or a hedgehog. These things are: Space, Air, Shelter, Water, Food, and Stimulus. In the next few paragraphs I'll cover each one briefly as it relates to your pet hedgehog.

Hedgehogs Hedgehogs are amazingly cute little insectivores who can be quite friendly despite their unapproachable prickly appearance. Of course, one must pet a hedgehog very carefully... The pet hedgehog (also known as the African Pygmy Hedgehog ) is originally native to Africa, and is much smaller than the European hedgehog . The pet hedgehog has several color variations. Their backs are covered in short, very sharp spines, but their tummies have a soft short hair coat. If upset, the spines stand erect and form an impenetrable barrier from head to tail, and if they feel very threatened they roll into a complete ball, with only spines showing. However, when calm and content, the spines are laid back and the hedgehog is quite easily handled. For color variations look at this Web site: International Hedgehog Club (IHC) Choosing a Healthy Hedgehog: You will want to choose a single hedgehog since they are solitary and don’t normally like to share a cage. Never buy a male and female to be placed in the same cage unless you intend to breed! Hedgehogs are ready to breed as early as 8 weeks and females should never be bred before 5 months, so be careful! You may decide to either go to a pet store or check ads and buy from a breeder. In either case, you are looking for a good healthy animal.
