We've been raising hedgehogs since 1993. The short version of a very long story is that it was simply love at first sight. From our first hedgehog, Sonic, our herd quickly grew to about 165 within a year. After we had completed our initial research into hedgehog colours, (you'll find more info on this here) we scaled back to our current herd size of 35. We are small-scale breeders with occasional pet, show and breeding stock available in a variety of colours. Please ask about availability. If you are looking for more information on hedgehogs, we have copies of THE PYGMY HEDGEHOG A PERFECT PET co-written by Bryan and Sharon Massena:
THE PYGMY HEDGEHOG A PERFECT PET

ISBN # 0-9655629-1-3
By far the most complete book about the Pygmy Hedgehog that's ever been written. This book contains information on purchasing and caring for pet hedgehogs, breeding, colour charts with full-colour photographs, the show standard, and much more. Written by Sharon Massena and Bryan Smith, renowned hedgehog experts, pioneer breeders and founders of the show system.

WELLNESS RECOMMENDATIONS
A checklist for maintaining your pet's health The theory is that every one year of our lives equals 6-7 years for dogs and cats. Thus, an annual examination schedule for pets is like humans going to the doctor once every 6 years. These are our minimum recommendations to ensure that you and your pet have a long healthy relationship. It's called the human-animal bond, and it is a wonderful
unconditional love!
  • Clean, fresh water at all times A balanced dog/cat food staged for the age, health status, and activity An annual physical examination Current recommended vaccinations against disease Annual intestinal parasite check and treatment if present Dental health care maintenance Neutering to prevent serious diseases Prevention of external parasites Daily grooming, attention, thoughtfulness, and love Dogs - heartworm tests annually and prevention all year Cats - Feline leukemia virus/FIV tests annually

Top 7 Pet Hamster Books Guide Picks Hamsters are one of the most popular rodent pets. Whether you choose a Syrian (teddy bear, golden) hamster or a dwarf hamster as a pet, taking proper care of the hamster will help keep your hamster happy and healthy, and give you a more rewarding relationship with your pet. The following are my recommendations for books to help you take care of your pet hamster. Hamsters A to Z
By Lorraine Hill (who also has good hamster information on her web site), this is an excellent all-around introductory hamster book. In addition to care information, Hill discusses the various species and colorations found among hamsters including dwarf hamsters.
Dwarf Hamsters: Complete Pet Owner's Manual

This book is fairly unique among hamster books since it is entirely about dwarf hamsters. By Sharon L. Vanderlip DVM, the book follows the format used by other books in the Barron's series and is packed with care and health information as well as helpful tips and great photos. An excellent choice for dwarf hamster owners.

92. Care And Feeding Of Hedgehogs
exceptional animals that are easy to care for and of shelter, you are offering yourpet a place hedgehogs require extensive amounts of exercise to avoid obesity
http://drexotic.com/care_hedgehogs.htm
Care and Feeding of Hedgehogs By Christine Hancock Hedgehogs are exceptional animals that are easy to care for and friendly if properly socialized. Their natural habitat is the forest, grassland, and scrub. In the wild, hedgehogs spend most of their time searching for food. In captivity, they prove to be curious animals who spend an abundance of time exploring their environment. Housing
A large glass or plastic aquarium, or a homemade cage works well to house your little friend. Be sure the walls and flooring of the cage are smooth to prevent the animal from climbing out. Wire cages should be avoided at all costs. Wiring allows their little feet to slip through, causing injury to the hedgehog. Ample floor space is a plus. This allows for a large amount of play room and helps prevent obesity in your little friend. The best place to keep the cage is in a warm room. A good range of temperature for a hedgehog is 72-85 degrees Fahrenheit. Cleaning the enclosure on a weekly basis helps control unwanted odors, making it a good pet to house indoors. Accessories
The bedding should be nontoxic, absorbent, and relatively dust free so their noses won’t get irritated. Avoid cedar wood shavings as they have been the cause of respiratory infections in hedgehogs. Shredded newspaper works well and is most cost efficient. Our hospital, however, recommends a product called Carefresh, a newspaper-based bedding that is soft, absorbent, and easy to clean. These animals need a shelter, or a hide box in their cage. By offering a critter log, plastic pot on its side, a kleenex or shoe box, or another form of shelter, you are offering your pet a place of security and a place to sleep.

HEDGEHOGS
Hedgehogs are small insectivores looking much like an upsidedown oval bowl, that is covered with sharp quills, with an adorable little face and ears peeking out from one end. Neither legs nor tail are very visible during normal movement. Hedgehogs roll into a ball of projecting spines when threatened, leaving themselves all but invulnerable to any natural predator.
Hedgehogs do have soft fur on their faces and bellies, and so are not entirely prickly. Some hedgehogs have what appears to be a narrow reverse Mohawk hairdo (a narrow furrow that runs lengthwise).
It isn't a scar, they haven't lost quills. It is natural and helps the quills point forward without getting crossed when they bristle.
Katherine Long
Running in size from about 6 to 8 inches in length, mature African Pigmy hedgehogs look for all the world to be little armoured tanks being lead around by one of the busiest noses in the animal kingdom.
Hedgehogs tend to be quite nervous in their temperament, and will generally duck their head down, accompanied by rapid snuffling or snorting. This presents a very prickly forehead to any possible enemies. The more used to you (and awake) a hedgehog is, the less of this ducking and snuffling will occur.
The following is largely verbatim from Nathan Tenny and gives a good detailed description of pet hedgehogs:
Grzimek's Animal Encyclopedia says that they weigh about 200-220 grams (about seven ounces); this is for wild animals. Captives seem to be much larger; the smallest of our three hedgehogs is 250 g and growing, and our large male weighs about 400-450 g when he isn't overweight. (However, all our animals have come from exceptionally large bloodlines.) Adults are about six to eight inches long, depending on how far they're stretching when you measure.

Furthermore, little is known about our proper medical care and the petcare literature for hedgehogs is inadequate and often incorrect.

Rosie HOME
Hello! My name is Rose Akwekon (Rosie is my nickname) and I have been living at The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue for the second longest time (after Louise) when I moved here on February 25, 1998. I was born in November of 1995 so I just turned 4 years old. I've had a pretty hard life before coming here, since I was blinded in one eye and for a while I was a middle school "mascot" where some human boys used to bat me around the classroom like a golf ball during recess when the teacher was gone. She finally found out when they were doing and caught them. Then she brought me to my present home, where I lead a pretty relaxed and happy life. Let me tell you something about our home. The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue was originally called The Flash Memorial Hedgehog Rescue named after the original resident, Flash, whom I never got to know because she died just shortly before I arrived here. When I came here I was terrified because of all of the beatings I used to get at that middle school, so I stayed rolled up in a ball most of the time.
When I got here there were two hedgehogs already here, old Thelma (even older than me - she was born in 1993) and little Louise, a very wild but happy hedgehog. Thelma became my friend and snuggled with me all of the time and before long, I started to calm down. Then Little Flash came here and she was sweet to me also, and she and Thelma became best friends. After a while I came to know that even the humans here were not going to hurt me so I became more relaxed. My dear friend Thelma died from being very old on July 12, 1998, but I did not know why she went away so I went looking for her every day for a few months. The rescue was renamed The Flash and Thelma Memorial Hedgehog Rescue on July 12, 1998 because Thelma was so special as a caring and kind hedgehog. The rescue was formally organized in the next month, becoming a charitable nonprofit subsidiary of W.O.L.F. (Wolves Offered Life
